Sorry, was busy reading some interesting stuff in the Soapbox.
You can go to work, Guido, I've said all I intend to on the subject already.

Except that someone who doesn't know the difference between 'of' & 'have' [ie: should have], ought not to toss out pejorative allusions [pause while you look that up.....] on 'hooked on phonics'. :D
Now, back to the interesting debate!

Obviously there is money in it or so many people would not be successful at it. Only you can answer the question is it worth stepping out of your comfort zone to be your own boss with no guarantees and no normal benefits. Starting your own business takes a certain breed of person and is wholly different than trading dollars for hours regardless of the business you choose.

What wasn't stated in this senario, there should have been down time paid for all the time the truck has been out of service. This downtime should equal the average revenue the truck has made for the 90 day period before the accident.I just hit a deer myself,as most people here know,my truck was down for 2 weeks and I collected pay for the whole time it was out of service.
I was also involved in a second accident, when a young lady hit me,this time my truck was down for another 12 days, and I also collected the down time for that
Read the insurance policy, the first accident's downtime helped pay the deductable,of course the second accident didn't have a deductable as the other party had to foot the bill

Thankfully when I hit my deer in my old Dodge, the carriers insurance had a replacement vehicle clause....5,000 km/3000 miles of using a rental....which just covered the 10 days downtime..

Thank you Xiggi. I have been reading this EO for a couple of months now. I have called owner operaters drivers that work for a fleet owner several Expediteing companys whished I could have went to the EXPO Had to work . It that the original post realy makes you think hard and it is scary to start out @ 51 to own my own business. My farther may he (RIP) was a truck driver back in the early days worked for Helms Express out of PA. I like to drive just want to be on my own the wife and I have talked about this our son is on his own so we are at the empty nest syndrom. She wants to stay whereh she is for now to see how this works. What I would like to do is ask all the question to learn. And is there any advise you all can give me. I will keep an eye on here. I realy do like whit you have said on the EO here you are so honest and up front and that helps. Again thank you for your time be safe.

Anyone who has been on here for any length of time and have read my post "My Hino Nightmare" knows that breakdowns happen, and it really doesn't just happen to certain brands. Although it is harder to find parts for Sprinters and Hino's.
If I hadn't been in a lease with a replacement truck clause, I'd be broke!!!!
6 months of household expenses is the minimum you should have to get into this business, this will also help to relieve your stress from week to week when you have a slow week.
Getting into this business and it is a business, with $1000 dollars is a sure recipe for failure. Save up some money and then think about expediting

Problem is... a lot get into this biz as a last resort measure....they've been laid off, close to losing everything and see this as the "brass ring"...unfortunately this usually leads to even more problems for them....They think not as a business opps, but a life preserver.

This is just my opinion, BUT besides having the capital to live on until you establish a good cash flow. You better be prepared to sit some where, maybe for days where the only shade is under your rig. It can get old in a hurry.;)

I look at is differently, I feel that if you can't afford a van to run in (outside of something special), then you should not be in this business.

Vans are CHEAP and easy to find.

To expand on this just a bit, I am not talking about getting a van to run but actually the amount of money you have to live on. If they have that $5000 to $10k, and then drive for someone else could be a very good thing to do.

I think a lot of owners take advantage of their drivers. I know of a lot of stories where the drivers got screwed and the owners just got someone else in the drivers seat.

As mentioned this is the last resort for a lot of people and sometimes instead of actually getting a job, they think this is replacement income then get upset when reality hit them in the a**.We make this out as something easy, it really is easy but the business part can be and sometimes is very daunting. People who are desperate read these posts and think Great I can make X amount of money and actually get into a bigger mess by trying this work.

I am not currently in the tranportation bizz right now, but what I think is maybe that, either the company u are leased to, can provide a spare vehicle at a little fee.

Now this would create an additional expense for the driver, but it could also determine the financial outcome for driver. It can be done by either leasing 4 a set fee, or percentage of milage.

Another way would be able to rent a vehicle from a rental company, even tho no qualcom. but I would say dispatch can be done on cell phone or puter.

Just an Idea. his too would reqire a reserve money system., but with the company assist it could keep u running.

Most carriers don't give you a 2nd thought when situations that will put you out of service come up...they just move on to the next truck and driver and tell you to get back to them when you are ready to start hauling freight.....its all on you as the owner, as it should be...its your business...not theirs...

Rental unit....the mileage fee would kill you.....now for a CMV, and some of the bigger leasing / rental companies (ryder, penske), that coild be different but a cargo van or sprinter...I really don't think that you would do well in the ROI end while renting a van....

With TJP being down for over 10 weeks now I'm wondering how long it is going to be before he goes postal.

Also that dealership should be nominated for a "Real Men of Genius" commercial...

Just to close this out. TJP is now has the van back and is in service.

There were 6 payments made on this unit while it was down and no income being generater. The fact that alot of mistakes were made by alot of people (excluding TJ, he is harmless in this mess) including the owners, the wreck repairing dealer, and the mercedes dealer and Mercedes corp..

The van is now on with another carrier because of how things were handled there also, again that can be viewed as mistake made by the owners and all involved.

The thing that anyone that reads this post needs to take away is to make sure that you have set yourself up to succeed right from the start. Make sure you are informed on all levels of what you are getting into. As I said there is enough blame to go around for what happened here, I hope those reading have learned from it as the owners , the driver and all involved have.

Now, get rollin TJ, miles are waiting to be run up!!!
