Soccer moms

Soccer moms scare the crap out of me. I am hauling a load of semi tires through Grand Rapids Michigan and on 131 south near the Burton street exit a soccer mom with a gross sense of entitlement decides to pass me on the shoulder and I am watching her do this while stuck in a traffic jam and the space between my truck and the concrete wall is getting narrower by the minute where her suburban will not be able to squeeze through the space. So to warn her to back off she got a courtesy blast from my new hadley air horns. They are loud, anyways she follows me to where I got to drop off tires and rips me a new one because I woke her kids up from sleeping.

I responded, you should thank me cause I saved your childrens lives from your aggressive driving. She stood there with a stunned facial expression.

I swear people are getting more and more dangerous out on the road. Wouldn't you agree?

There are bad drivers driving all kinds of vehicles. The number of big truck drivers I see ten foot off someones bumper is crazy. The problem is people not what they drive. I had an 18 wheeler run me off onto the shoulder the other day and that was an open interstate at 65mph.

There should be a requirement in which a class C or up is required for anything bigger than a mid size passenger car.

There are way too many of these Partridge Family haulers driven by people who have no business being behind the wheel of anything bigger than a go cart.

What they should do is put a passenger restriction on a persons drivers license. Take a page out of the cdl manul for driving a bus how you need a p endorsement if its above 15 occupants. But say if its something like a 16 passenger van van with a brood of evil children and a multi taking mom. Make the parents either get a chauffeurs license or get a restriction on their license saying how many passengers they can transport.

Say if they have 6 kids, on their license it should say p6 code for 6 passengers 1 driver. Their home state could make some serious cash off of the correction fees to add this on someones regular drivers license.

If it keeps the number of multi tasking soccer moms off the road I say regulate the crap out of their driving privelages.

Regulation hasn't done much to get the idiot semi drivers off the road. Education does more than regulation ever will.

Education is only as good as the ability and will to retain it.

I think all drivers, even soccer moms, should have to take the CDL test.

Excellent comment. Let's hope she was stunned because you helped her focus on the true stakes of the game.

Educating drivers hasn't been real high priority for the government [fed, state, or local]. Budget cuts removed it from high school curricula many years ago, forcing teens to use independent driving teachers [who knows what they teach?] and practice with whichever parent is willing, and who knows how many bad habits are being passed on? And that doesn't even count aggressive drivers, who can be more dangerous than drunks.
Carriers don't offer much supplemental learning, either, [except FedEx] such as skid pad training, or emergency driving techniques - it could be optional, and some of us would welcome it.
Safety has to be a constant objective behind the wheel, not the one carrier representative we don't want to have to talk with.

Cheri, our school didn't cut it because of budget cuts, they cut it because the state said they had to. The school spent zero dollars on all drivers ed programs because dealerships provided the cars, the gas was bought from fundraisers and the material was provided by the state of Michigan. This was common for many many schools in the state.

Also FedEx provides skidpad training?

What does load-1 offer?

I don't know exactly what FedEx offers, just that it has an annual event that includes safety competitions in precision maneuvers [which Linda Caffee has won first place in]. I don't think it's training, just reinforcement - making it competitive and fun [!] to sharpen skills - I admire that approach.
I've not been with Load 1 but a few months, so am not sure what is offered - yet. But if it is an idea that benefits carrier and drivers and the general public, I have no doubt that John Elliot would be interested in determining if it could be offered. He's good like that. :)

Do it yourself,Leezaback. Michigan Center for Decision Driving, at Eaton's proving grounds in Marshall, MI. $100 for a full day. Very worth the money.
