So Much for Trust

Inside of the Storm edition.

There was recently a debate about NC to IN and it also ties in with what Rich and the Col were discussing about TRUST.

All I can say about my company I am leased to C&M is this. Trust is and has never been an issue. They TRUST my judgement, and I do the same in return.

I took a good look at my last two runs and logs (I do keep my yellow copies) and sure enough I averaged just below 61 on the trip up to IN in less than 11 hours, so they do trust my judgement and if I can and will do a run or any other business item that arrrises.

I perssonally will not have my judgment questioned by what Rich went thru, call it Ego or what ever, its my truck I paid for it and I will run it safely and profitable without the help of a babysitter calling to confirm if badge # is correct. How Insulting. I am a big boy now I make the decisions as they come up not in a board room with a safety director who has never driven anything that ever weighted more than 3,000lbs.

We have seen several odd things happen over at our company and most of them involve drivers. I also do not like to be questioned if I have a co-driver with me or what the weather is like. We have though seen and heard of drivers not running with their co-drivers going shopping and saying they where stuck in traffic or any other manner of incidents. We work for a very large company and it is not personal, they have been burned to many times by drivers and since each individual is not know they have to respond to anyone to verify what is happening. We feel that when you work for a large company like we do it is by choice and so we do not take very many comments personal.

It would be nice if everyone could believe they're hearing the truth, whether they're hearing it from a driver or dispatcher, but we all know that isn't always the case - some people will exaggerate, tell only some of the truth, or just flat out lie. So I don't take offense at having my statements verified, because in their shoes, I believe I'd do the same.

So far, I've been able to trust one dispatcher... me. Now I'm not the BEST dispatcher I've ever had; just had no reason not to trust me ;)

I'm sure I would be the best dispatcher I've ever had - right up until I got fired for blatant favoritism, anyway. ;)

Broom,I'm not trying to make waves, but answer me one question, how do you average 61mph when you drive in a state that has a 55mph speed limit,or better yet,how do you average 61 mph if you have to stop for fuel.
Maybe i'm doing something wrong, but to average 61mph,you cant drive any slower than 70,and except, for a few in spots on wva tp, speed isnt 70 anywhere, from nc to in
A little advise,if,God forbid you have a seriious accident,I hope you can explain the over speed.

That all depends on how he goes to Indiana. If he takes 40 through Tn, the speed limit is 70. Then 65 in Ky, and 65 in Indiana..

Come on, Night... as many years as you've been in trucking, don't you remember when you didn't have qualcomm? I don't know about you, but I log my fueling ODND.

To get back to Kraig's original comment about trust what it boils down to is the usual 5% bad apples ruin it for the 95% that are truthful and honest. This applies in many industries and in many public areas.

Years ago before the new HOS rules went into play Roberts dispatchers would always want to speak to both drivers and ask them question such as "What is your Zip Code".This was done to try to eliminate the Ghost Driver.I remember a guy who once drove a C unit straight through from Boston to Phoenix. He qualifed his neighbor who was a Russian imigrant and had very poor english. When dispatch wanted to talk to Boris he would pretend to be Boris with a terrible accent. Guy got away with it,but as I told him"if you are telling me this story it means you have told others so sooner or later you will get turned in".

Another guy with a Ghost driver had an accident in Texas and was unconscious for about 12 hours. The Texas State Police spent about 12 hours looking for the remains of the co driver. These are reasons why trust no longer exists.

I got cought with my ghost driver, when they wanted to talk to my co,and we were at shipper,so I told him he was sick, and asleep, next time i called them, this was before qc,was at delivery, they made me come in office, straight thru from rochester mi,this was in 1987,
before that,I had been running nc to ca round trip 3 times a month.
if you remember June, she asked me one time about me being alone,I told dont ask questions, then I wont lie, going back to being caught,at that time, drivers were given choice, run single or team, but if team had to produce driver, they didnt give me a choice, bring in a co-driver or say good bye

You average it out with all the states. With only 250 or so miles thru OH, it balances out with all the other states being 65 or 70. Say the trip is 650 mi. OH is about 39% of the trip at 55mph. With 61% being at 65 or better (we'll say 65 for s&g) you avg 61.15 mph for the whole trip.

I haven't met a scale master yet who has broken down speed by state. Don't know if they do this in MI and OH. As long as I've been driving, I was told keep it around 63mph avg in your logs, unless you're running mostly MI and OH. When I get out west/south, I avg 68 in my logs.

You tell'um Broom---I'm so mad I ca'nt. On my last job, I got so tired of feeling that I had to compete with the younger "HOT-SHOTS" that wanted to run 24/7 that I could'nt stand it. I have left point A, driven 11 hours, took a required break, completed the run and delivered at point B.---Only to discover tha a driver who left the same point A as I did to deliver at the same point B as I did had been given my back haul load.. The only thing is--- the other driver left point A 8 or 9 hours after I did. So much for operating legally! I ended up having to lay over and get a load the next day!
When I left my last employer I graciously informed him that sooner or later the law of averages catches up with everyone an d that one of his HOT_SHOTS would end up costing him everything he had worked for!
With my new job, I am paid well by the hour for every hour I log on the driving line or the bottom line no matter how long the trip takes. I was also told point blank that log violations there results in immediate termination! THANK GOODNESS---Just goes to show that there is a place for all of us!

I'm wth you Pappy. Lots of companies look the other way when they know you can't be running legal but you're on your own if something happens. Seems like a double standard to me. Many companies encourage cheating loggs but hang you out to dry if you get caught. Or better yet, dispatch wants you to cheat while safety slaps your hands when you do. That's the main reason why I switched to a Sprinter. Now I can produce as expected without lying in writing and signing it. If there was any business for sprinters I'd have the best of both worlds.

Wow! It's still going? OK, it was Greensboro, NC to Lafayette, IN. 635 miles and I had 10 hours left available to drive. That means I would have to drive 63.5mph (minimum)the whole 10 hours to make it on time. Nightcreacher, you are one of the few who can see my logic in saying to them that they better swap it. I would be speeding in quite a few places to keep that 63.5mph average. Like ANYWHERE through Ohio, and all through Indy. Somebody mentioned 70mph on I-40 in Tennessee. For one, that would be WAY out of the way going that route. Secondly, there is quite a stretch between I-81 and Knoxville that is 55. Plus, to go that route from North Carolina means I'd have taken that hilly, curvy stretch between Asheville and the Tennessee line. Have fun averaging 63.5 through there!
