As was widely expected, Russia crossed over into Ukraine early this morning but on a more expansive scale than was predicted by most "experts". Putin is taking the whole country in a flagrant act of war, obviously not concerned by threatened sanctions by Western Europe and the US. To fully understand this mess, we need to go back to 1994 when Bill Clinton was president and review the Budapest Memorandum. (bold emphasis mine)
How this will effect the US is yet to be seen, but considering the weakness and ineptitude of the current POTUS and his administration it's not unreasonable to be concerned.
"Three decades ago, the newly independent country of Ukraine was briefly the third-largest nuclear power in the world.
Thousands of nuclear arms had been left on Ukrainian soil by Moscow after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. But in the years that followed, Ukraine made the decision to completely denuclearize.
In exchange, the U.S., the U.K. and Russia would guarantee Ukraine's security in a 1994 agreement known as the Budapest Memorandum."

Why Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons — and what that means in an invasion by Russia
Three decades ago, the newly independent country of Ukraine was briefly the third-largest nuclear power in the world. A lot has changed since then.
