Redundant questions of an expediter

I might be misinformed, but aren't the trucks only financed by ES? Making the individual purchasing the truck the owner? I know for a fact if I fianced a truck from ES they would allow me to choose a carrier in the ES network.

There are some that do that (at least I think they still do that). There are also a few O/Os who sign on with ES instead of signing on directly with a carrier (apparently there are some benefits to doing that, but I don't know what they are, maybe a better fuel discount or something). But mostly ES is the fleet owner and drivers drive ES trucks like they would for any other fleet owner.

Some advantages depending on the carrier would be fuel discounts and likely the rate. Especially if looking at Panther. Fleet owners run at a higher rate than a individual truck. As far as the five percent variance, if the truck grosses 20k a month, that is a grand a month, or $500 if splitting it. So you are basically paying 6k a piece per year for the new ride. Just a personal decision I guess?

There are certainly worse ways to come into expediting cold and not knowing a lot about it than to start with Expediter Services. It's a good way to learn the business and see how it all works, without having to invest a lot, that's for sure. If you happen to luck into a really crappy fleet owner from the start, it could mean fewer loads at a lower rate, and suddenly that 5% looks like a bargain. I dunno. I've never driven for ES, and don't know all that much about them, other than the people I've talked to who are or were with them, and no one I talked to was particularly displeased with ES. Some were just fine in driving and getting paid and not having to concern themselves with much of anything else, and others left because they were ready to concern themselves with the other stuff.

Maybe if you enter in as a team, ES is great, but as a solo to be paired with another solo who is a total stranger????:mad:

My first partner was supposed to be a young girl (23) I believe, but I wasn't prepared at that time. Not to be getting too deep into the subject, but I could see that being a major time management issue when it came to bathroom breaks, ect.. Yall know what I mean.

That's an individual problem. My wife was on the road with me for years and I rarely stopped while driving. I know others that never have an issue either. Now being teamed up with a 23 year old girl might cause other problems though. ;) Especially with a wife at home.

Wife and I teamed in an ES truck for 4 yrs 09-13. 40/60 split they paid for everything. Truck was at Panther. Realistic miles on the avg 3kish a week if you are lucky. Peak 5k maybe 4 times in 4 yrs. We were hazmat DOD canada flagged and were in Elite Services 100% ontime 90ish % accept rate. Alot of garbage short loads that took a full day to do were constantly offered and if you dont take some of them the truck will sit.

Overall ES treats the drivers well.. Never had a problem with pay or them maintaining the truck. If i was looking to get back into expediting i would give ES a call and get back in one of their trucks.

Is there also a fleet owner involved? Expediter Services leases on also to fleet owners, that in turn, are leased on with Panther. If so, you have another layer to deal with---1. fleet owner, 2. Expediter Services, 3. Panther...

Expediter Services are the "matchmaking" service, and each of the 3 levels will get their piece of the pie, leaving you and your partner with a little bit smaller piece.

You might be better off working directly for an owner that is not hooked up with Expediter Services...just saying.

I disagree with this statement for ES. I'm a fleet owner in their program and I'll put my trucks revenue up against anyone else's and have many times, doesn't appear to be any difference. It is, however, statements from people on the forums that have no clue what there talking about that makes it more difficult for fleet owners like myself to recruit drivers. Please stop the nonsense.

Now, I run for fedex, not panther. I also used to drive for es several years ago and it was a 40/60 split. 35/65 was the split for solos. I think either you misunderstood or they've lowered there rate. If they really did lower the rate shame on them and find another fleet owner. Way too much money to leave on the table to drive a 2014 factory sleeper cascadia. That's not a good selling point/ glamorous truck by anyone's standard.

38% if you have hazmat and passport, 40% if you have hazmat/passport/ and clearance for government facilities.
Was so curious I had to call until I got that freaking phone answered.

That's the weirdest pricing structure I've ever seen but I also know nothing about panther. I'm 100% FedEx so maybe that's where the difference is. We do a 40/60 split, plus 100% labor, haz and a couple other items to the drivers.

I am at this moment full and don't foresee any vacancies until 2016 when the next round of trucks hit my lot. The couple left coming this year are already spoken for. But there are a number of good fleets out here that are highly recommended, including ES.

Looks like they're aiming for ambitious people. That kind of plan tends to steer drivers in the direction of maximizing their options as opposed to another carrier that may pay 40% with cdl only.

Maybe. That kind of plan also keeps your drivers poor and makes them easy to steal from you. That said, they are taking more risk than I would. All my trucks are teams with hazmat. Not sure how panther is, but fedex runs too much haz freight to not have a hazmat.

They said maybe one Hazmat load per week per team is typical.

Yeah. That's a pretty good bit. You figure 3-4 loads per week total so 1/4-1/3 of your income could be coming from haz loads. That means if your doing $600-$700 driver pay per week with a haz you would be looking at $1,000ish a week. Thats why we require them and I think most really successful guys out here have a haz endorsement.
