Pre Pass

Question, does anyone know anything about Pre Pass. I just got a pre Pass transponder and the only time I get green light is when the scales are closed. Do I need to have my owner activate it or something.

They come pre programmed and activated. If you get a green light bypass. If you get a red light or no light pull in. When in doubt pull in any way.
How often you get pulled in depends on your carriers safety rating and how many trucks that particular scale house feels like pulling in.

This is the big problem with Pre Pass, you pay for it but get no benefit, on top of that you are paying to give the DOT another door into your company and punish you.

One more question if I get a red light. And I pull in to the scale and get an arrow to bypass, can I bypass or do I need pull to the right and really weigh?

Not sure I follow you on that. When I had pre-pass, I loved it. The benefit was hardly ever having to cross the scales.

Giving the dot another door into your company might be a problem...I don't know. I was a company driver then. I never knew of it causing problems. I do see it as a time stamp though.

Thanks guys you have been alot of help. I finally received a green light at an open scale. I know Try Hours has had problems with seatbelt tickets. At orientation the safety guy said we get one free one, will can you for the second.

PrePass enables you to bypass scales when you are green lighted (in most states). That saves time and fuel. Without PrePass, you would have to go through every open scale which increases the likelihood that you will get pulled in for an inspection. Does not going through a scale open the DOT door more than getting green-lighted to bypass one?

In MD if you have pre pass and get a red light you MUST go to the static scale. DO NOT use the by-pass lane.

when your directed into the scale via a red light on your Pre Pass you do what those arrows tell you, if they want you on the scale the arrow will say WEIGH, if not PASS....never Ignore the directions once your in that scale road many times they may just be looking for IFTA stickers or MUDFLAPS OR ETC...But still roll you across or thru...

Actually I just ran through MD and there was a sign that said if you are directed in and have PrePass you need to proceed to the static scale no matter what the arrow says. I'll look at it again but I'm quite sure that is what it said.

Paullud is 100% right on the sign. I got pulled in, saw the sign, got the bypass and took the bypass. I started thinking did I screw up ? I called the scale and asked for an explanation. The officer said the static scale is the in-motion scale that determines if you get the bypass or not. Kinda goofy. Once you enter the driveway you cannot avoid THAT scale. In the future I'll still obey the lights.

I retead Paullud. I believe the sign does not say ignore arrow. More like If pulled in all prepass trucks must proceed to static scale.
