OOIDA

Hiya,

I realize this has been talked about before, but I'm curious as to what the advantages of joining OOIDA are. Please no "search the archive" comments cuz uggggggh.. I've searched em & I get no luck. I know they're in here somewhere, but all I can do is keep clicking on "next page". My luck w/ computers & such is why I drive a truck by golly!! =)

I'm looking to save money on workmans "crock" insurance ($170/month w/ my company for something ya'd have to get hurt about every 2 years & be laid up for 6 months to have it pay for itself) & also for cargo van insurance. My cargo van insurance is "a little high" but not outrageous. I'd like to think I could save maybe $800/1000 year on this.

If I can save some money on these two things, I'm an easy sell.

Also, if I recall it right, by using a current members referral, I can get them some kind of little bonus/gift/what have ya. So Leo, if you're able to read this let me know how I could use you as a referral.

Thanx,
Danny

You are welcome to use my name and number as a referral. Their number is 800-444-5791. I don't know if you'll save money on the two insurances you mentioned but there are also member discounts with a number of companies as well as some accounting and legal assistance and information available. You also give them one more in number of members for when they are working on our behalf. The more the better. Hope that helps.

If you come to the MATS show in louisvlle next month you can join up at OOIDA's booth and save about $15. They would also have all of the information you are looking for on hand. show is from March23-25th

Danny, I have a policy through Brown & Brown for $91 a month. If you want, I will e-mail you some info on what it pays if you are off.

There have been some reports from the truckers roundtable forum that sometimes, LOE are more generous and fogiving to O/O with the OOIDA sticker. If true or not, cannot vouch for it, only reporting what I read.

Check out: www.ooida.com

If the answers aren't on the site, call their toll free phone. There are a lot of folks working in Grain Valley,MO HQ who will only be too happy to try to get you the answers.

I was passing through the area last week and stopped in to pay my truck insurance premium. I will state that their quote was not the least expensive that I got when I shopped coverage, but the fact that the quote spewed out of my FAX within an hour of speaking with them is the reason they have my business. 2 other insurers sent FAXes the next day and another was 3 days.

I also bought a very cool jacket from the OOIDA store.

I appreciate the input & I will be joining. I thank ya all for your input. I didn't see quite the insurance coverages I was looking for, though they might have em & I just didn't find em.

Highway, if ya could I'd appreciate ya mailing me that. Awhile back, in another post, it was explained to me why we had to have workmans comp. As I started thinking about it more though, I've come to wonder why we'd be forced to take (IMO anyways) such a rotten insurance policy. It would seem that if we're going to have to have a specific kind of insurance, that it would be something more reasonable. Anyways, if ya could send me information on this I'd appreciate it.

Be well everyone,
Danny

Please don't go off the deep end here but I am a member and have no idea what I have gotten for money other than the LandLine Magizine.

I may benefit in some way but I have not seen it. I will also say as for them speaking on my behalf, I have not seen where they have benefited me there either. The HOS change went through despite what I wanted them to say on my behalf as has everything else.

I am open to being told how they have helped others but I have seen no beneifit at all. Just the magizine.

OOIDA is worth the membership because they speak for the Owner Operators.
They do concentrate on over the road tractors, but that is the majority of their membership. We as Expediters can become a voice in the organization if we join and start electing people to represent our ideas. All we need is to have one on the board to start to offer ideas that would benefit us.
I am a member and drivers who work for me are members.
Forty Five Dollars will not be missed over the year, but you will be Glad you spent it if they can answer one question. They are always at different trucking events offering reduced fees for membership.

I support OOIDA because they are the prominant voice for us in Washington. But it is tough to point at anything of significance they have acomplished for us. In fact, the industry has gone downhill since the association was formed. They were organized in the mid-seventies and the late seventies is when things started going downhill with deregulation.

I am a member and an advocate of membership. Unfortunately they don't win all the battles. They do fight the battles and they do so from the proper side of the battlefield. They are working for us to get sensible HOS rules. They are working for us in all they do, unlike other organizations that are good at lip service and sounding good but not truly working on our behalf. The larger the membership number the more clout they'll have and the more they'll be able to accomplish. It's as simple and straight forward as that.

Thanks LDB for your input. All of what you say is very true. In time they will possibly be of benefit. I will say at this point I disagree that they are of much help to me. Maybe one day that will change. There is more to my statement but I see no reason to air it out on here. If you wish I will gladly share why I feel the way I do in an email.

I'll put my funds in AARP.

Thats an organization which will impact us to a far greater degree than OOIDA ever will. I've watch'd OOIDA in action over the years and not too teribly impressed.

AARP has "real world" benifits on and off the road.

Be careful and particular about where you put your money. AARP is on the record and actively supporting elimination of Article 2 of the Bill of Rights. Without Article 2 the rest are up for grabs.

OOIDA doesn't accomplish as much as they want primarily because there aren't enough members yet to have the clout we need. I do more for them by being a member and adding one to their number than they do for me at this point in time but that's ok. At least they genuinely and legitimately attempt to do what's best for drivers and O/O's.

Hello to everyone, hope all are doing well! Just a quick note on OOIDA. I am a local area company driver and I am a memeber of OOIDA. I joined because OOIDA tries to level the playing field, although that is a tough battle when it comes to big business and lawmakers. They are a voice of opposition to the ridiculous laws that never seem to stop being propossed. EBOR'S, HOS, Haz-mat,.....it never seems to end. It's not about what OOIDA can give me as far as services, but rather a voice that looks out for my interests as a driver. If all O/O and ID's joined we might actually have a real voice that gets better results.

I agree with raceman . I was a member and found their help inadequate . I tried to get full insurance coverage in KY and they didn't have an agent to supply full coverage , only bobtail . Another company I contacted sent me 6 companies that could provide me coverage . In my opinion OOIDA doesn't have any interest in individual members . They're looking for large groups so they can file class action suits against major trucking companies . Who really pays the costs the compsnies have to pay to fight these often frivilous suits ? It has to be obvious by now their voice is unheard in Washington . The only way they ever appear to win is when they have a real influential organization seeking the same goal . Why do you think OOIDA criticized the ATA for not fighting hard enough on HOS issues ? Because without ATA's support OOIDA didn't stand a chance .

That's exactly the point. Anyone who doesn't see that isn't looking from the right perspective. The ancillary benefits are a bonus. OOIDA doesn't win all the time partly because too many people have the notion their single membership won't make a difference. Same reason too many people don't vote. It isn't that OOIDA is hanging on ATA's coattail for wins. It's that sometimes ATA takes the proper side of an issue same as OOIDA. If you aren't a member you should be.

ooida you should join as they do help, in early 90's the state of tn
was giving trucks a very hard time putting trucks out of services for anything they could think of, and ooida took'em to court and stop them from doing what they were doing. there are about 125,000 member's and growing, they have alot of good program's but sometimes they don't fit what we need
if we can get ooida like vfw , nra, nocoa, fleet resrseve (for all retire navy) we would have a bigger voice
a friend of mind who is a ooida member spoke at a house of rep for over 4 hours telling them what problems were in trucking
so
two things you need to do be sure to vote , in all elections and join
ooida

also a couple of times was going to be stop at a scales and they saw ooida stickers and waved me on

sents we can't join teamerest next best thing is ooida
