from the article:

if they want to eat at the ageny luncheons or meetings, then they are dicated to as to what they can eat....per the dept mandate...

Which part of "Health Department" makes it unreasonable for them to promote health[ier] food?
Besides, food provided at meetings has always been whatever they provide, take it or leave it, hasn't it?
If they served unhealthy food, they'd get blasted for double standards and hypocrisy.

If you want to eat at McDonald's, you are dictated as to what you can eat off the menu by the menu there, toooooo. Sheesh.

I'd venture a guess that if you dined at the old "shelled one's" house, he would also dictate the menu as well....:D

To a point, yes. If you're a guest in my house I am at your service. The menu would be dictated by available ingredients and my own cooking skills. If I've got it, and you want it, I'll cook it for ya. :)

Blah blah blah government blah blah blah health care blah blah blah rights blah blah blah ...

A bunch of cackling hens ... My God ... these are public servants and the government has the right to save tax money when they can, if this means some overpaid fat NYC worker has to go without at their city paid for functions, then so be it.

IF the worker doesn't like it, they are free to quit.

Yeah, like there is no corruption, graft or extortion in the government. This will spread. The government is a cancer.

Layout,
You know that the system is setup to favor the government worker, not the citizen. SO what if they can't have fries, I think it is a great thing because they work for us and I don't know about you but I am sick of government workers getting paid while many of us are out of work. We need serious workforce reductions everywhere.

Can tell you don't do the grocery shopping - healthy food [lean meat, fresh veggies & fruits] costs a lot more than the processed stuff!
It's one reason obesity has become such a problem, because the food budget is an easy way to cut expenses in tough times [which has been for years for many folks] but the cheapest foods are also the least healthy: hot dogs, bologna, macaroni & cheese....

Or just bring their own food.

I shoot or catch the majority of my VERY lean meat. Nothing like fresh caught fish. Venison is very good for you and so is WILD duck. I am still fat and happy, It is all so good I eat too much of it!!

It is not my fault. It is a government plot. They spike the water with drugs that increase your appetite. :p

Yeap if i go to McDonalds, I have to pick from their menu..but that is my choice...public health dept employees going to meetings that include a lunch, do not have the choice to go to that meeting or now what they will eat since the menu s now controlled by the system...

Next, the job f the health dept is not to promote anything...they are ther to make sure that health laws are enforced and that code violations are taken care of...now yes they may have taken upon themselves to impliment an agenda to telling people how to live in a "healthy' manner..but if we were to go back and look at the city chater and the charter that put the health dept in place, i bet that the mandated responcibilities of the health dept do not include an agenda on how people are to eat....

but as I said , everyone thought the no smoking in public places because it was bad...then came the no smoking if you want your job..now we have cities that have laws aganst smoking in a condo that ajoins another unit...

thats what this is about, not "this particular mandate", but now that this is in place, an overstep on the gov's part, where does it stop?? Once it starts, we all know that the libs will continue because, "they know whats best for the people" ....

They have NEVER had a choice in the matter of food served at meetings.
And if promoting proven healthy foods and habits isn't a stated part of their job, it should be - promoting isn't forcing anyone to eat or do anything. Employees can still bring their own food to meetings, if they choose.
Something has to be done to stem the rising numbers of obesity, diabetes, and cardiac problems, besides ignoring it - we can't afford the medical bills! :(

WE? Medical bills are the responsibility of the the individual. The ONLY reason WE get stuck is government overstepping their bounds.

If I get fat by my own choice I pay the bill. My health is MY responsibility. NOT yours. I pay for me, you pay for you. The ONLY public responsibility is veterans wounded or injured in the service of this country or vet who signed a VALID, LEGAL, contract that provided for health care. NO ONE else is ENTITLED to any health care.l

if this means some"

being fat is not what you eat. it is how much you eat . what is in bologna or a hot dog that is unhealthy .so if they are unhealthy then a steak is unhealthy.

and exercise has allot to do with being overweight and heath problems .

so a 50$ steak is more healthier than a 5$ steak

and don't people over eat when they feel bad . like losing their job , having a hard time finding any type of job , not having the money to pay the bills .
. because some stupid group that wants every body to believe and be just like them and they just want to be in control of what , when , everybody,

so if you like to take a pet along with you . a stupid group says that you can not take you pet with you any more . you will just say ok and leave your pet at home while you are away .
what about the stuff you do to stay awake while you drive . the music you listen to . the drink you drink . what if they say you cant do that any more .

why did our founding fathers fight the British . because the British wanted to control them

Cheri,
I sort of agree with you, and I do the shopping so I know what things cost BUT as pointed out, it has to do with benefits of state workers of a state where they are paid very very well and a place where fresh is not just a term.

WITH that said, being fat is caused by a lot of things, one thing is stress and another is depression - you don't always have to eat too much to gain weight. I know this from experience, and know that most of the 'low cal' diets DON'T work for a lot of us FAT people.

My point is this, to reiterate - they should not complain, they have a job and they work at the whim of the public.

I know nutrition & metabolism are complex, but the majority of obesity is caused by eating too much of the wrong things, [sugar, fat, salt, processed 'stuff'], and too little exercise.
I'm as guilty of eating unhealthy as most [confession of a cupcake junkie], but I don't work at the Health Department, so nobody reports my choices to the media. And the dog makes me walk several times a day, whether I feel like it or not.
There's a lot more to losing weight than counting calories, and I bet the Health dept has programs for employees to help with stress and mental health issues, as well, so healthier food is part of the package.

Like that ever stopped anyone from complaining, lol.

I partially agree with you, much of what we have in society is part laziness and part of an issue of non-labor vocations - truck driving being one of them.

BUT that doesn't mean that mental health or the triggering of the bodies defenses through mental issues is not a leading cause of some of the issues with being FAT. The one thing I seem to think is a good indicator is the over-scribing of mental health drugs, primarily anti-depressants and their side effect with people.

Well I don't know if Cup Cakes are a bad food if made with good ingredients. I studied the French for a while, and their food was over abundant of fats, in many places they lead sedimentary lives but don't seem to be FAT as we expected. ONE reason is a lot of their food is seasonal and a lot of it is without crap chemicals.

As for walking, I was listening to someone talk about FAT people who stay on the couch compared to people who exercise (both thin and FAT) and found that those who are couch potatoes seem to live longer. I haven't bothered to look for the study or find out if it is legit but it was an interesting thought.

What?

Those frign' unionized state workers have stress and mental health issues?

Don't expect me to feel sorry for any of them, they don't seem to serve a purpose in the bigger picture.

Those of us in basically sedentary occupations need to make an effort to exercise, true enough.

I don't know anyone who takes antidepressants - or they aren't telling, I guess.
What I see is kids who are going to have serious health issues later, because their diet just sucks [sugared cereals & 'Happy Meals' mostly] and their physical activity is minimal.

Why DO Frenchwomen not get fat?! :(

Doesn't have to be job related stress....

If they keep the workers at restaurants from reusing food dropped on the floor, yes they do, lol.
