Many felt it was ok when gov agencies and businesses said you couldn't smoke to work there...others said it would just lead to them pushing their "mandates" further and further..."nooo the left said , its all good smoking isn't healthy and it is also bad for those around the smpkers" ...well now NYC Health Dept. is telling its employees what they can and can't eat...

No Fries for You! Health Dept. Workers Balk at New Rules
Agency issues new guidelines to reform department eating habits.

No Fries for Health Dept. Workers | NBC New York

The city's Health Department is going on a diet. No deep-fried foods served at agency lunches. No cookies and cakes at the same time. And no beverages over 25 calories per ounce: Those are all part of the new health mandate issued to department employees in a little bright-colored brochure ahead of their move from Manhattan to Queens, according to a published report.

The brochure requires that tap water be on the menu when food or drinks are served and suggests bagels or muffins be cut into halves or quarters to reduce the number of calories employees intake, reports the Daily News. Also, thinly sliced, whole-grain bread is a suggested offering at work events.

Aside from the dietary rules, employees are required to adopt good personal and office hygiene habits, namely by avoiding wearing smelly products, eavesdropping and putting up signs co-workers may deem offensive, according to the new set of guidelines for "Life in the Cubicle Village" obtained by the News.

The updated guidelines come amid a massive city campaign to improve public health via lifestyle changes related to diet, exercise and non-smoking.

While some health department employees complain the new rules verge on "micro-managing," the agency says the updated guidelines reflect the department's effort to practice what it preaches.

"The Health Department is leading by example by updating its guidelines for food and beverages served at agency meetings and events," spokeswoman Erin Brady told the News.

The agency begins its move today from its longtime headquarters in lower Manhattan to a new building in Long Island City. The department expects all of its nearly 3,000 workers to be settled in the new location within a few months.

ALL places selling food will soon have the menus controlled by the food police. This is just the beginning of the horrors that are yet to come. This government is out to control your every move from cradle to grave, by force if need be.

You guys *did* notice that it says 'served at agency meetings and events', ... right??

This only means the lunches that you guys are paying for (via your taxes), the ones ordered for meetings, seminar, educational events, etc. They are not telling their employees what they can and cannot eat for lunch, they're telling them what the agency can buy to serve their guests when hosting a health department meeting. Makes sense to me since 'health department'... should really be promoting 'health', right?

No, wrong. They government is overstepping their bounds. In reality, the health department should be disbanded. The federal government has NO business in health care, period. Pesky thing that Constitution. They are now, and will continue, to use "health care" as an excuse to control the People. The GREATEST danger to the health and welfare in THIS country is the Federal Government. They have the power to kill more people than ANY other cause and are likely to use it.

Ahhh it is NOT the governments place to "Requirer" anyone to "adopt" lifestyle changes against that persons desired lifestyle...it is all about "personal decisions", not a unlawful government mandate or "Requirement...

And beyond that, as i said, it was no big deal to some when smoking was banned in some places as a requirment of employment..how far away is the mandate of what you can eat as a requirment for employment, when they start mandating what you can eat at meetings?!?!?...What happens when their next move is to limit what is available to or what adults can eat in the Gov Cafertia...?!?!?

I don't see where they're mandating what you can eat at meetings, they are mandating what the health department will allow the health department's money to be spent on when they get a meal brought in for a meeting. And if the government chooses to only serve certain foods in their government cafeteria, I'm pretty sure that's within their choosing as well. If the government employees choose to eat something that isn't served in the government cafeteria, I'm pretty sure they're allowed to go and eat wherever they want.

As far as having to be told to embrace personal hygiene, well, if that has to be stipulated, then there must be a problem, eh? And many workplaces, government or not, don't allow people to wear perfumes any more, and haven't for years, due to allergies and offensiveness. One person's nice smelling perfume is another person's ... I don't know what the word is.

Health departments have existed for many years, they're the people who set the regs for restaurants and immunizations and stuff.. you know, the things that help protect public health. Kind of like how FMCSA sets regs for trucking.

what about the drug prices that the heath dep . helps to keep high . what about the natural cure that could be used but we cant use them because it is to hard for them to tax them .

what about the vitum the is no regs on them but the vituem companies make millions

cafeteria is where the people buy their own food with their own money
so far i have never seen anything about not wearing perfume anywhere
and how much time to they get for lunch . to leave and go eat and to drive back .dont you like to eat something differant also .

YES to make sure that they are selling good clean food . would you like your food to be dropped on the floor picked up brushed off and put back on your plate and served to you . or have a leaking paint can over the cooking area .
i tryed to comment on certin this but it didnt work so i just took what i add and put it on the bottom . i am to lasy to fix it up . becuse i am getting burned out every body *****es but nobody does anything about it . like our founding fathers did they all stood together and won the freedoms that we are loseing today because everybody has to have thing just for them . not for the group

Pjjjj is correct: the only mandate is to "practice what they preach" in regard to healthier food choices served at agency events, and to respect others by limiting the powerful scents [aftershave & perfume] that can trigger allergies in close quarters, and to refrain from putting 'obscene' or objectionable photos up on the walls.
All of which seem perfectly reasonable to me.
. They government is overstepping their bounds.
No they are not: promoting "the general welfare" is a large part of what taxes are collected to do.
In reality, the health department should be disbanded.
That's the single most asinine statement I've read in a long time. Maybe you trust that businesses will look out for our health and welfare, even at the expense of their profits, but I don't, and doubt anyone else would, either.

Blah blah blah - that makes the 14, 365th time you've said the same thing: your opinion totally unsupported by fact. I wish I had that much free time.
