accidents happen...like I said in my last post..I was the only english kid on the block....I did not expect them to change because of me...so I learned a bit of Portugese along the way and earned their respect and they tried English....it is called co operation....

This would NOT have been a "accident". Not knowing basic words is dangerous. Sad part is that my wife and I would have been likely found to be a fault, NOT the person who could not understand "MOVE NOW"!!

Ya see UncleTed...layout has never had a real job....LOL

sitting on his duff at a desk and now in a drivers seat...:p

YEAH, YEAH, YEAH. Let's see, in high school I dug ditches and cleaned bulldozer tracks at a land fill. I worked at Great Lakes Steel. I drove a school bus, cleaned schools, worked at a State Park, fought fires, ran on ambulance crews. Worked in management positions at both Cabela's and Gander Mountain. Those are just a FEW of the highlights.

LOL! Give me a break! :p

Those railroaders are a tough lot. I'll bet he was worker in his day.

I LOVED being a "Gandy Dancer". I started off on the track labor gang. Spiking rail, etc. Then learned track machine operator and finally moved up to switchman. I wish I could have stayed. I kept getting laid off. Bad times in Detroit in the early '70's.

A couple of quick observations here:

It seems as though someone is making a case for intervention by the very thing they claim is the threat to our liberty - the government.

The same individual seems to be unwilling to acknowledge that economic self-interest is a great motivator to .... learn (another language) .... and earn (more) .....

And pageants are important? How many have ever been killed in one? 200? 300? over the years? Who gives a flip about silly stuff? What is your fixation with Spanish any way? Besides, that was London, not Great Lakes Steel. Pageant, that is a FUNNY one! :p
That's my point - there are places where multiple languages don't matter, and places where they do. In places where they do matter, it's reasonable and proper to require a common language, whatever that might be. But according to you, the mere presence of multiple languages will get people killed, in all situations.

I don't have a fixation with Spanish, anyway, at least not beyond that of those who do.

Incidentally, which way would one turn upon hearing "MOVE NOW"?

Without some sort of action people will be killed. I am of the understanding that companies are no longer allowed to administer basic English tests. I go into factories and the "safety signs" now are displayed in "multiple" languages. The cost of doing such is substantial.

Of course the mere presence of multiple languages will not cause deaths in every situation. It NEVER produces any unity. It ALWAYS increases costs. It will cause or contribute to more deaths and injuries.

The more things fragment the more problems we are going to have. Congress knows that. They LOVE it. It increases THEIR power and control.

It does not matter. We will never solve this in here. It was a thread that produced a lot of discussion and ALMOST no ridicule. Kinda nice.

How radical is it when I was working on the railroad at Great Lakes Steel? When I shouted a WARNING in ENGLISH that a track crew was about to be hit by a train, they KNEW what I said and could move. Now, imagine the same circumstance with a crew where there are several languages spoken. Dead guys.

Same thing on the loading dock. Which oriental language was my wife going to learn fast enough to give a warning? How many languages are we going to have to know? 5, 20, 100?

The more fragmentation there is the more injuries and deaths will take place.

Is it worth that? How many interpretors will we need to shout MOVE!! YOU ABOUT TO GET RUN OVER BY THAT TRAIN! ?? 5, 20, 100? Flash cards at the mills or in the mines?

How would YOU handle the real life dangers this will contribute too or even cause?

well assuming they don't know American and put themselves in harms way....they die.....simple.

It puts the entire crew in danger. People WILL die. People WILL be hurt. Again, is it worth that?

Yes, it's worth that. Happy now?

I've heard dire warnings yelled out in many languages, including the language of canines and rattlesnakes, and I immediately knew the importance, of not the actual words, of the warning. It is usually in the tone, rather than the language, that's important.

Just selected these few quotes above to put it in another perspective.

Let's say you're picking up a load outside in a warehouse say somewhere in Dallas, Texas. (Which is in America)

Driver of Forklift is a Mexican that only speaks mexican. You are by the loading dock where Forklift Driver is loading your truck at. You are having a conversation with another driver that only speaks English, just as you only speak English. (You are in America of course, where English IS our primary language - AT THIS TIME) All around warehouse is Mexicans that only speak mexican, and they're carrying on loud conversations with each other because the atmosphere in the warehouse is one of a loud surroundings.

Now, you and the other Driver are having a decent talk a few feet away from dock with backs towards the Forklift Driver. Forklift Driver comes around the corner with a pallet stacked 6ft high full of widgets that weighs over 2,000 lbs. All of sudden throttle gets stuck on Forklift, Brakes go out, he loses steering all together, and Forklift is heading right at you 2. Driver is trying to yell at both of you to get out of the way in mexican. Due to the fact the atmosphere in that warehouse has been loud the whole time you were there (forklifts running back and forth, horns being beeped, Mexicans all talking and yelling mexican back and forth amongst each other), you happen to not get the "GET OUT OF THE WAY, or LOOK OUT" warning that driver is trying to relay to you cause he is yelling it in mexican.

Who is to blame when you 2 are crushed to death by the out of control forklift when the bloody crushing death could have been avoided if both of you had received/heard the warning being given to you in the primary language that is spoken in the country you happen to be in????

Should the blame be placed on you and the other driver for being to stubborn to "learn" a foreign language to be able to carry on a safe and productive life in a country where "english" is the primary language in that country??

Just food for thought.....I know this is wayyyy out there, but it could happen. Know what I mean.

First thing that comes to mind...I NEVER turn my back to a fork lift driver.....LOL even an American speaking one....

Secondly....all the yelling and screaming would get my attention no matter what language was used....

so yeah it is out there....:)
