Again ..... cents per mi vs dollars ....
You're providing a premium service!
It's not about your operating cost cpm ...
If you can run a little leaner than most, great ... you should make that additional profit on top of your earnings ...
Is your operating cpm really just fuel ...?

Oh, believe me, I don't work for fuel money. I make a profit. When I will not make a profit any more I will get out. To be more specific, fuel costs me 8 pennies a mile and maintenance 3 pennies. So yes, I can make a profit at today's rates. I should make that profit on top, but it ain't happening. I am being realistic here.

I used to run for $1.50 or more constantly, but things have changed. I can put my foot down and turn down everything less than let's say, $1.20 a mile and 'show them' but how long would I last?

Instead of spending all that money that I made back then, I saved a good portion of it. So I can weather a bad period. Being debt free also helps. If the time comes that I can't do it any more....See Ya!

I'm with you on the first part. I look out the window every time I start driving. Thought everybody does it. Hehe.

On the 'It pays for nothing' I disagree with you. Let's see. $44 buys me approximately 22 gallons of diesel. Those 22 gallons last more than 550 miles. I wouldn't call that nothing. Here is the reason why someone driving a fuel efficient vehicle can be profitable at a lower rate than one driving a gas guzzler.
Sorry keep forgetting some you are Vans.. Maybe it's time the carrier's look at that as a cost saving and level the playing feild..Vans are currently running at a hugh advantage. :D
But I'll stick with my,,,pays for nothing.. Those same 20 gallons by the time I D/H then move around the dock and idle only takes me to the next fuel stop.. Based on what I paid this morning, I'm thinking your not getting 22 gal for 44 bones unless you bought in Indiana or @ the Speedway. ($2:39 in Michigan)

Apples to apples yea maybe you have a fuel eff vehicle but sloride drives a st8 truck and your in a van there is a huge difference there!

I guess it would help if people added in their profile what vehicles they are driving. Nonetheless, regardless of vehicle, if the load brings a profit we should do it, otherwise we should turn it down.

Speaking about fuel efficiency, in a straight or a tractor it is even more important to have a fuel efficient vehicle than in a van, just because they burn so much more fuel. The other day I ran some numbers on different scenarios for straight trucks (Why? Because there is no way in hell I would spend 45k on a new van to run for .75 a mile. That makes no business sense at all to me. So when my trusty sprinter needs to be replaced, it will either be a straight, or I get out altogether).

So, I was looking at a straight that is getting 11 mpg compared to one that is getting 9. You might think that it is only 2 mpg difference, so no big deal. But, at an average of $2.5 a gallon, an 11 mpg truck saves a nickel in fuel every mile compared to a 9 mpg truck. So, if you drive only 80k miles a year, you will save $4000 in fuel costs. That is no small change in my book.

There's Profit ... And THeRE IS Profit! There's no way I will take a load for .75cents a mile

what premium service? Over a Truckioad that goes from point A to point B in the same day if under 600 or so miles?....we now have competition..we are not alone....
I see the our brothers in hot shot with expedite loads out of the border crossings down south....the layoffs in thier industry they are crossing over into our loads a lot more now...

Any load that is awarded to a carrier on anything other than lowest price is based on a premium put on it by whoever strokes the check. Lowest price doesn't always win, I believe your carrier agrees with that.

I'm gonna state this bluntly & in a rather crass manner .....
I never really liked this analogy, because I don't mean to be insensitive towards others .. but here goes ...
Apologies if this offends anyone ....

Most owner/ops work for their pimps ....
I've always had the viewpoint that my pimps work for me ...
guess sometimes we are swimming in the same direction....

when dispatch calls and says..How much to get you rolling? and they ignore what I want and do contrary and cause to me sit...thats grounds for contract termination...THEY work for me...not the other way around....

and why is called a contract? There is no negotations involved..its more of a declaration of what each party will be responsible for....its a take it as is offer or leave it.....?
