John,

I would be interested in hearing more about these 2 issues if can share some info.
Thanks

Well CSA 2010 is a pretty big concern for companies. It is basically a complete re-write of the system for safety. They are still coming up with new formulas. Just as recently as August they announced another change of the formulas. Most carriers are concerned that this should not go into effect and the numbers released to the public until they have gotten the formulas (they call it methodology) fully figured out. The latest recalculation proved to be good for the large carriers, but not so good for smaller carriers.

The program also has a number of glaring concerns. Accidents for instance. A carrier is penalized for an accident whether it was at fault or not. Other issues include the point or scale system. Under the new system that officer that lets you off with a seat belt ticket vs. speeding is actually hurting you. A seat belt ticket is more points! A DUI is not even one of the most severe point items. As well even if you are let go with a warning you still get points. If you get points, the carrier gets points.

The new system does not have a challenge method for the carriers or drivers as well. Even if a ticket is fought and dismissed it does not come off of CSA. While the intent of the program is good, it simply is not ready to go public.

As a carrier a drivers points stay with us even if we terminate the driver. So a good carrier can hire a good driver with a clean record. That driver gets pulled over for excessive speed for some reason. Even if we terminate, the points stay with us for 2 years. The carrier hired a good driver, but we can't control every aspect of in cab behavior. If the carrier ask responsibly and reacts to incidents it should not suffer for things it could not control.

The attack on the owner operator model is on going in Congress. The democratic party has been working to eliminate this for the last few years. While they have noble reasons in their mind it attacks the very base of our industry.

Some of this stuff is pretty scary for carriers our size. A couple bad drivers can really mess you up. Tearing down the owner/operator model is something I don't even want to think about. I guess some of the large truckload carriers would like that.

Nothing is noble about the democratic party. The new DOT laws, Congress have to follow them to. DOT Exams all Congress staff, and if there BMI is to high they have to quit Congress.

.....so if a carrier truck is in the right lane at 60 mph and some maroon cuts in front of him making a kamikaze move to the ramp which he is passing then the carrier and the driver are at fault?

nice.
not that ever happens of course.

Of course it's the driver's and the carrier's fault. The four wheeler can do no wrong. It's always the truck's fault. Anyone knows that.

we stopped at the shell in so dallas the other nite. the cops were there and and ambulance and fire truck. someone had hit an 18 wheeler and bent the right side of the front bumper 90 deg from straight. i guess the cdl holder had to pee and i further guess the 4 whlr asked HIM if he had insurance.

when will someone hold the responsible parties responsible?

Sadly, under the new system the carrier would be given CSA points for the accident if it is written up as DOT reportable. So if the car is towed away, it would be reportable.

John that is not fair to the driver or the carrier. This DOT 2010 program is going way over board on everything. When we move into our new office everytime one of our trucks comes into the office the truck will be pulled into the shop and checked over. The brakes, tires, lights and so on, better to check than get a fine of $385.00 for the brakes being 1/4 inch out of play.

John,
Just wondering something.

Do you make all your contractors put those BIG Load-1 signs on the sides of their sprinters and box vans?

Or can someone put those little door signs on instead?

John will correct me if I am wrong here, but from what I read in the contract is when you start you get the door logo's after 90 of service you have the option to have the big logo's put on your van or sprinter and your % pay goes to 70%

My question is if this is correct does the logo have to go on the hood of the vehicle also as I seen some sprinters have?

1 issue for some contractors with the big logo's, and not just at Load 1 but with ALL carriers, is that they sometimes over weekends will stay at Camping grounds. Now i know that not all campgrounds have an afliction to commerical vehicles but some do and from the guy that i have talked to, the little logos work best because they can be covered with the plain white magnetic material that is used to make signs....

All depends if that extra 3% will be worth it to have big signs slapped on your truck. A $2000 week would net you another $60. Over the year, that's $3000. Not bad if you can make up your mind where you want to stay.

Most expeditor trucks seem to have residue from 3 or more different companies:rolleyes:

So instead of digging through the search results for the percentage, I assume that without the large sign it is 67% and with it, it is 70%.

Well even at 3% what other fees are there for a contractor?

Comdata fees?
