I know a man here in town that gets disability and works delivering auto parts but has the check made out to his wife so he doesn't loose his disability check.

I think one thing that is constantly left out is that many on welfare also work under the table. That is never mentioned but many do. That is often how these households gain income for big screens, 200 shoes, rims, tatoos, cigerettes and the list goes on. The "underground" economy is huge and is growing at a very fast clip.
This is one of the very reasons that if abled bodied, one should work or perform community service for their benefits after a prescribed period of time.

According to the charts in the cite, states [which create the rules for welfare & food stamps] have long since enacted such regulations as work, education, or volunteering, as a prerequisite.
My only personal experience is unemployment, when I used to get laid off every year, for about 6 weeks, and I know how bad that was. First, there's a 'waiting week': no income. [Tough to take when you're just scraping by] Then, you have to be actively looking for a job, recording dates, times, places, people contacted in an effort to find work [I didn't want another job!!!] and if the state finds anything falsified, you're disqualified. They loved finding reasons to disqualify people, and I can only imagine how much worse it is for collecting food stamps and welfare benefits. Maybe it's just 'SOP' to people who have never known anything else, but for those who are used to earning a living [even if just barely] it is a humiliating and depressing experience, and trying to stretch the little bit of benefits to cover what you had twice as much to pay for before is a never ending headache. The notion that people who were used to working for a living would consider it acceptable, much less preferable, to working is just inconceivable to me.
What the Republicans are doing is kicking people who are already down, because it's easier than tackling the real problems - which is actually their job.

What Republicans--some of them--are doing is limiting theft by making sure that only those who absolutely, legitimately need help get it, that they steal only the minimum it takes to get by, and that the theft not continue a minute longer than necessary. They ought to also see to it that recipients later pay back what they've stolen.
Many Republicans are actually trying to grow and perpetuate the welfare state.

Somewhere between many and most non-employee taxi drivers do this or similar.

I believe times have changed. No more waiting, and you don't even have to look for a job anymore. Can thank Obama for that brilliant move. Now we have the highest number ever on welfare. Just reapply once a year and you are good to go. Many nowadays almost wear it like a badge of honor. Provided film of the kid in CA is one example. I certainly don't think that represents all people on welfare, but I gave the easy solution.

Require hard work to collect a check and MANY will just drop off the roles.

When I have more time I will post the new laws Michigan is working on. Drug testing, requirements for work and school attendance. Even the ACLU say they might be good the way they are written. Nothing blanket, chance to rehab etc.

The cycle will never be broken unless we break it.
