That's the reason I had to stop and think. With the trucking companies taking expedite freight, and more people seeing expedite as "easy money," I'm looking to follow the bux. Trucking rates maybe stable, or slightly up, but the company driver rates have gone up significantly from when I got my cdl, 20 years ago. I see it as a good place to save up some money, and broaden my horizons for future plans.

I dunno... working harder and smarter, I guess. :)

I'd like to hear DaveKC's synopsis of his whole 2013 vs 2014 truck average.

sometimes taking a step back enables us to clear out the clutter and see forward a bit clearer....

Not sure on the us as in me.. But 2014 certainly made my banker (wife) stand up and take notice.. 2014 ended as my worst year ever in this business. Appears most of it is due to lack of work or inability to load the truck once getting out of the core area and resulting in empty moves back. 2014 had brought way to many empty miles.

Did final Oil change of year 2014....took the mileage...

10,000 miles more, $5,000 less then '13...not a great year....so goes the business...:)

I pulled off the opposite pay deal. While home the last 2 weeks I worked on my taxes. I drove 12,245 miles LESS in 2014 then 2013. But my gross income was UP by $3,981 for 2014. It should have been less miles and more gross, but I didn't switch to CRE until March 1st.

Just said goodbye to my current carrier. It started with that 4800lb load they tried to pass as 3100, next morning I drove 100 miles to pick up, waited 2 hours to be told they don't have any freight for me. Now drove to pick up 1 piece, long skid @ 1750. When in reality it is 2 skids and 4 loose parts, heavy poles about 200lb each they try to just throw on side of my van on top of the wheel drums. I refused to take the load unless it was fully palatalized. They said ok and in a process of re pallatizing the load I was called all kinds names by some big african american fellow. I guess he was mad that he had to do extra work. At this point I closed my doors, asked him to open the hanger door, he told me I am not leaving and I will be taking this freight because I have no choice. At that point I helped myself to open the hanger doors, got in my van and left. Called my carrier, and asked not to call me with load offers anymore.

everything was suppose to be on one long skid. Guess they didnt feel like doing all that work. Heh, not to mention 2 pallets 4ft high of metal parts were not even secured to a pallet. Rocking back and forth with a slight touch...

After being called names, multiply times, of different gratitude, it was just a big **** you, I will not take your freight at all. Shove your 400$ up your you know what. I'm not damaging my vehicle or being insulted.

What a way to start a new year.

None of this sounds carrier related to me. We all have loads cancel from time to time. Getting to a pick up and finding out things aren't what you expected isn't uncommon either. Dispatch can only pass along the info they're given.

Not sure why you thought it important to point out that the guy giving you crap was African American...

Just calculated my numbers for last year and was very surprised at the outcome. They are as follows: 10,000 less miles driven than last year and over $12k+ gross more than previous year with being in service 62.7% of the time. All miles driven (including dh and all miles when not in service) came to .848/mi. All done in a sprinter. As I have always said work smarter not harder.

Darn fine numbers, Ken! Those shorties across the border must have helped in 2014!! Keep up the great work!!
