Can someone educate me in the tolls associated with the use of tag axles.
While coming back from Canada empty, Detriot-Winsdor, I was charged for three axles even though my tag was up.
The tollie told me it was the number of axles she counted, not on the ground.
I've checked the Bridge sites and this forum but haven't been able to verify this one way or another.
Thanx
Dave

Dave,
When you deal with these people at the bridge, they can decide to charge you what ever they feel like within what is on that plaque.

I came home one night after a trip to St Thomas and was charge $3 (normal price), the next night same time different toll person I got dinged for $4 because I was a 'truck'.

The same goes for the blue water, they actually would charge me more for my van then I should have been and when I asked the girl said "If it is a 3500 or more than 5 lugnuts, I charge $3.50" (*or what ever the price was).

You've certainly hit on a "sore spot" with us. The problems we've encountered with toll pricing and our tag axle have not been exclusive to border crossing. Any place that doesn't accept our E-Z Pass is suspect to us. Reason being, we began to notice differences in tolls we were charged in crossing the same toll booth both ways on the same day.

I don't know that there's anything written concerning this, I've never researched it. Common sense (not very popular these days but we can always hope) would dictate that you would pay only for those axles on the ground. I mean, why would they charge you for every axle you have?? I don't think these trucks that have multiple axles would stand for that at all!!

Our most recent problems were on the Florida turnpike where it seems to be at the discretion of the person at the booth and I'm not satisfied with that. We now take the time to confirm with the question "that's 2 axles, right"? I was amazed on this last trip just how many actually changed the toll, not having looked close enough to see that the tag wasn't down.

The requests on this recent trip to Florida were all met with politeness but I will add that one time in Houston, Jim had to tell the girl that he'd just came through the other way an hour before and the person over there had only charged him for axles on the ground. She was pretty stubborn about it but eventually did change his toll. I guess it just boils down to your mood of the day and just how much bantering you want to do to put that money in your pocket and not the state's that you're driving in. For us, it's become a quest of sorts to encourage people to pay closer attention to their jobs while charging us the correct toll.

We just have two axles, and recently going into Canada we were charged for five! I would've said something, but I had already driven away thinking they raised the prices when my husband looked and said, "no wonder, they charged us for a five axle truck.
In Florida, we told every booth, "that is two axles right?" And all of them tried not giving us a reciept. Usually everyone gives you a reciept. It seems that toll people just charge whatever they feel like charging that day.

I commonly get mistaken for a rig, cause I have a class 8. One actually got past me the other day, for $2. I'm signing up for EZPass! Fed up with ppl just assuming.

Well it sounds to me like the toll collectors that try not to encourage you to take a receipt, might be making a nice little "bonus" each day.

Perhaps the Turnpike commission might be interested in your story.

I wonder about how well the attendants get paid every time I am short-changed and too tired to immediately realize it.

Well it should be no surprise in these times, everyone seems to have a scam going.

Just my opinion

When i was attempting canada a few weeks ago the lady at the toll both asked me how much weight i had. SO i said 3,000 lbs, she looked at me and said REALLY??!!! i said up and showed her my paperwork out the window and she was oh wow, and let me go. I didnt know she wanted to know the weight of my truck. :+ and the toll was really cheap. But needless to say i got to the border was turned back and had to pay another fee. What is that crap. Pay at the beginning and the end of the bridge. Now i know why i take the tunnel (in my personal vehicle, dont freak out)

The Bridge Tolls are RE: is yours up or down

I assuming we are talking about the Ambassador Bridge between Windsor and Detroit.

US prices
3.15 cents per hundred pounds gross weight with a minimum of:
2 axle truck $4.00
3 axle truck $7.50

It doesn't say whether all axles must be touching or not.
(12 axle centipedes pay 25.00 minimum)

Y'all wanted a big truck. So.... Leave em down, load the truck as intended, cross the toll booth, pay the price.

Problem solved.

Ya know, trying to screw the pooch the second time, probably won't work.

How does E-Z pass work for a truck with a tag axle? When you sign up for E-Z pass don't you list number of axles? If you have a two axle truck with a tag how would E-Z pass "know" if your tag was up or down? I am referring to open road tolling or unmanned tolls.

When on the Florida Turnpike the toll taker charges you for three axles when you only have two on the ground, do the following:

If they argue with you (as has been done with me in the past) and refuse to refund you for the overcharge simply SHUT OFF your engine, tell them you either want a refund or a supervisor, and DO NOT MOVE until they comply!!!They will eventually!

Also, dont get caught on the ticket portion of the Florida Turnpike if you have to stop for your 10 hour break at one of the plazas. You have 12 hours from the time the ticket is issued to vacate the pike. If you go "ONE" minute over they charge an extra $14.75 plus the regular toll. We know from experiance.:(

And when you cross tolls empty you put extra wear on the tag tires to please the pooch ? What is the point of having a tag axle if you leave it down ?

Why in the world would you tell anyone to leave an axle down when not needed? You are always preaching save money run smart!

With the axle down you have more rolling resistance and your fuel mileage goes down. You are also putting wear and tear on the tires and also the axle. Our next truck will be a Class 8 and we are going to spec it with a lift axle. With the fuel prices and also the cost of running your truck out here we need to save money anyway we can. A small toll doesn't seem like much when you pay it out of pocket change but if you track all of your expenses you will soon see how fast that extra dollar adds up.

I guess a couple of you missed the "load the truck as intended part" eh? That relates to extra revenue. If you are not realizing additional income to cover the extra donuts... then take the tag off, or, don't run empty too much thru a toll booth. Anyway if a buck or two additional toll (when empty) is a show stopper, i'd love to read about a real problem.

If you do not watch the little stuff it can become a big problem. It is much better to come out loaded but be light enough you don't need that axle. Every penny counts.

What's to stop someone from lifting the tag axle and overloading the drives, just to make it through the toll plaza and cheat the toll?

I say the tag axle is indicative of the trucks' capacity and should be charged as such.
