Is Truck Stop Customer Service Improving?

Speaking of Flying J:
Wondering why they sell beer and tobacco and coffee but no lottery? Or am I assuming they are Mormon based?
THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A FLAME AGAINST MORMONS!
Just wondering since they are Utah based.

Not true. Was in a J last weekend north of Cbus OH and every 10 minutes they were on the innercom pushing the mega millions. Something about how for only $1 you could be the next millionaire. got real old after awhile trying to watch TNT. or was it AMC. Oh I am sorry it was USA. My bad.

We avoid Petros because of the silly way they award showers, they don't allow team showers as in T/A or Pilot.

Thats why I like having my wife as a team driver. We go into the showers at the same time and take turns or ....... I'll let your imagination go with that one. :D

Well I hope I am not in line waiting for you all to shower or whatever!

BTW...does she know you posted that? Can you prove it?

Truck stop service is the same as back in the 70's, 80's and 90's.
Depends on the day of the week, "if" there is a manager on duty, location, who had a bad day, is it raining or sunshine, did some driver just leave before you and jump all over the employee, are the registers working, are the pumps working, did a driver leave the showers a mess, is the truck stop old and outdated, etc.

We generaly do not have problems with service at truck stops.
Why, because of years of experience.
I do not wish to make a list of all the things a driver (not the truck stop employee) can do, to make his/her stop more pleasant, but I will ask all of you this.
When was the last time you searched out and handed the shower attendant a tip, saying thank you for a clean wash room?

In nut shell. If we treat them with respect first, we probably will get it in return.

Just because you have to let your imagination go doesn't mean you have to encourage everyone else to do the same!

Don't worry bluejaybee, 30 min showers. 20 min for me and 10 for him. He has a short imagination. ;)

I hope they CLEAN the shower before I use it lol

What really needs cleaning is his mind! :D

Ignoring MentalGiant and back to OP's question, I've seen good and bad in all of them. It just depends on where you go. For the most part I hate Pilot's showers, especially in Laredo (that t/s gives me the creeps) but the showers in the Pilot across from the TA in Dexter, MI are nice.

I like to browse in a Flying J store, but their prices keep me from buying. The other name brand truck stops don't have anything of interest to me in their stores so I spend very little time in them. As far as customer service, I haven't noticed any significant change one way or the other. Maybe it's because I spend as little time as possible in any of them.

.....here at pilot we have the fine art of making drivers stand in line down to a science.

....here at pilot we will crab at you about y-o-u-r incorrect transflo code while our employee types in the wrong letters.......

Just WHAT is the deal with some Pilots making everyone stand in one line when there are 3 registers open? It ain't no bank, ya know.
Speaking of Pilots - if you are ever in Hesperia, CA. Check out the Pilot. Day shift there is a woman who does the coffee corral. LOUD as can be, just a yabbering away - you can hear her when you are in the showers! I met quieter barmaid in a biker bar.
As long as I'm on a rant...why is it managers ignore the loudness of the PA music? Also they ignore the Sirius radio display used as the cashiers personal radio. Some of their music choices for both systems need looked at - heard enough offensive rap on both systems LOUD and clear.

This weekend, and this post, have really opened my eyes. I'm sitting here in the TA in Dallas, and, after having purchased 60 gallons of fuel, got my free night's stay here at the hotel TA.

There is a Dallas police officer or Sheriff here 24/7 (wondering who they ****ed off to get this assignment). If you don't buy fuel, you're paying $13/night to stay in the lot. Staying at the J on the other side of the highway is out of the question, as it's full....because it's free. When getting out to fuel, a guy asks if I want my truck washed (he's holding one of the TA's windshield suqeegees in his hand). I just had my truck washed. After fueling, yet another crackhead approaches my wife asking for change.

After reading a few of the posters here, wife and I just agreed to avoid truckstops like the plague. They are for fuel, showers, and the occasional restroom. These folks really treat professional drivers (their bread and butter) like dirt. If I'm paying $13 to rent their tiny strip of asphalt for the night, they could at least scare off the scum.....nevermind getting me going on the 5-0 doing their ****ed job.

Thanks for viewing. Rant complete.

Jeez, we were stuck in Dallas from Monday morning to Friday morning last week. We parked in front of the fuel isle at the FJ and weren't bothered by un-desirables at all.

( I'm starting to think maybe my hubby is an undesirable! Heeheehee, he's sitting here telling me I have hobbit feet! Mean old man! Hummmmph! :D )

I use the J for fuel and showers, no food. I only see one difference now compared to before bankrupcy. The lines at the registers seem to be longer. Whenever I buy fuel (always pay at the pump) and the printer at the pump is out of paper and need to go in to get the receipt there are usually only one or two clerks working and a huge line of drivers. Maybe this is not the case all the time, it is just my luck, that I get there at the worst time.

Ya, we avoid those trucks in Dallas if all possible. But considering the available ones near there, not much choice sometimes. We had the same happen to us last time we stopped there. Had a scrawny bony black woman come up to me as I was getting into the truck ask me if I wanted company, I said hell no!!! Then she saw my wife (inkasnana) in the passenger seat and headed to the other side and asked the same thing. lol

Anyways, there was a police officer on duty there, but he was to busy chatting up the girls inside the store.

I lived in Dallas for 5yrs and hardly ever went to the South side of Dallas. That is consider the ghetto.

Btw Yesteryear, I'm starting to like your husbands sense of humor.

I have no use for truck stops other then fuel,,flat tires,,showers.

I told her can I have more chicken than that? She looked at me puzzled and confused. I told her I only see 4 pieces of chicken in there. If thats all I'm getting, I don't want it. She puts 2 more pieces in and looked at me like I was trying to rob them or something. Then I after that, she asked if I wanted a drink with that. Then I was confused. I said, does the drink not come with the price of $6.99? All the other Magic Dragons I've been to always gave me the drink for that price.

After reading all of these, I can't help thinking of the owner's perspective.

After searching I was unable to find the percentage of profit at the retailer's level, on a gallon of diesel, other than it is 'whisker thin'. I found an example which stated the retailer's 'profit' on a $4 gallon of gasoline is $0.02 (that's 2 cents). The retailer's profit is at the bottom of the chain, with the wholesale cost, and taxes taking up almost all of the price. Out of that 'profit' the retailer could then deduct his operating expenses such as rent, payroll, foodcost, maintenance, etc. Add to that, whatever price the retailer buys the fuel at, and even tho his profit margin is already slim, if prices fluctuate downward, it comes directly from his 'profit'. The wholesalers and government get paid no matter what.

The retailers have these offerings.. overnight parking, all-you-can-eat buffets and restaurants, retail goods, showers, laundry, office & internet services, etc. I've got to tell you, from a Canadian perspective, we were actually in awe of all the services these places provide for you guys. Great way to try to get the truckers to stay awhile and spend money while they're waiting, on the things which may have a more impressive profit margin. Most of us are in business to be profitable, correct?

But the truckers are suffering, there are less of them to begin with, they're conserving their fuel like never before, they're packing their fridges with food from Walmart, they're buying enough fuel to take advantage of free showers, they're shopping around for the cheapest places to fuel, some might gorge themselves at the all-you-can-eat buffets, maybe even pocket some for the road (joking ok?). Typically, all-you-can-eat places make up the difference of what they lose on the big eaters, by also serving elderly, kids and women. Probably not so much with the truckstops.

The retailers are also making less money. They have to make changes to get their businesses back into profitability in order to keep their doors open. So they cut back staff, a huge expenditure, the remaining staff are trained to be more careful with food costs, and to promote sales of other goods. They have to start enforcing their right to only provide the free part of their services to their customers.

And then we complain.. service is slower.. we get smaller portions.. not as much is included as before even tho it's the same price.. the place is dirtier than usual because staffing is reduced.. the parking lot has pot holes.. staff is crabby.. we're being harrassed by the unmonitored homeless begging for cash.. we're being harrassed by the retailer aggressively trying to sell additional services..

The big rig truckers who may be buying lots of fuel are finding the parking spaces taken, maybe by some who have not even purchased fuel, nor spent any money in their establishment. And so they start to question why they are spending their fuel money there.

I don't believe the intent for these owners of truckstops was simply to provide for truckers a place to sleep, a place to prepare their already-purchased groceries, free bathrooms and waste stations. The intent was to provide additional services to their customers, with the goal of hopefully earning more revenues, and making it a win-win situation for everyone.

Now.. don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing anyone here, I'm just trying to open your eyes to the other side of the story. They're struggling as much as we are. We need to pay for their services, just as we expect to get paid for ours.

Are we talking the TA, J and Pilot at Baytown, Texas? Where I was at the Pilot Friday morning and was awakened by a tall slender black "man" standing in the street shouting cuss words at incoming trucks. Police also ignored him. I think he may have been retarded, but you would think they would have escorted him out of traffic.

pjjjjj,

I don't expect anything for free. But, don't post a picture of what I'm expecting to get and give me less. Still after receiving the two extra pieces of chicken, didn't even look like the picture. If they have to raise the price a little to give me what I'm thinking I'm ordering, thats fine and dandy. I just don't like the feeling that I was being cheated. I'm not a big eater, don't usually eat at the buffets, becuase I hardly ever in my opinion eat enough to make up what I pay for the buffet. My favorite is the country fried stead dinner. Bad for me but good to my taste buds. :)
