Moot, just dusting-off an old thread here, for my first post...to your question' Is it worth it?', my answer is obviously that I do not know, but I do believe that it can be worth it. At least, that is how I am hoping, as I have recently signed-up with 2 brokers as 'multi-carrier'. I started with a local company, with whom I had driven as a company driver for three years, and although they offered only out-and-back, I found that I could break-even doing that for a while, as I was just getting my feet wet. When they lost one of their best customers, then the winter slow-down, I started to look for large brokers who might offer back-hauls. It has been feast-or-famine, and a juggling act, as I suppose that I am my own 'handler', but I still believe that this approach can work, as long as I am up-front when I come on board that I am multi-carrier...
