General question...why do straight trucks seem to be in such high demand? Is it because shippers have shipments the size that demand an asset that size but not tractor trailer size, or is it because there are fewer of them then say vans?

Just IMO, the average expedite shipment is just too big or heavy for vans and Sprinters.
There are a lot of van/Spr loads but a ton of small & large straight loads. The cost per part or per skid is pretty expensive to expedite on CVs and Sprinters. But necessary when either a line is about to go down or the complete shipment is a box to a few skids.

Well I know I have have hauled a few loads that would have fit in a sprinter when either the shipper or receiver specified dock high. Or if the delivery required a liftgate.

I think a lot of it is, some don't know any better.

There may be some who "don't know any better", but I can't believe it's a lot. Their thinking is that they have docks for loading/unloading, why take risks using a forklift without the dock? The risk of damaging the freight or the people is much higher outside the dock, as Turtle can attest.
You back to work yet, Turtle?

SLOW is sometimes in the mind of the group of drivers that are sitting.....because somewhere there is another group that is just finishing running 3 or 4 loads in a row and think it is busy....hence the sometimes heated discussions about this business.

Turtle,
Where you been ?
Are ya OK?
Recovering from a fractured wrist. Happened on Nov 19th. Was cleared by the doctor to go back to work on April 8th, but if I had to perform any emergency steering procedures I couldn't have done them. So the last 3 weeks I've continued rehabbing the range of movement and strengthening. It's far from 100% but I feel confident I can now handle whatever comes along.
