In Ohio you need a Class C to get a chauffeurs and its the same written test as for a Class A as class C. Some companies require a cargo van to have class C with hazard endorsement, and the reason is the endorsement

correct me if i'm wrong but don't you just have to pass the general knowledge protion of the cdl written tests and the road test to get a class c. it seems to me it would be worth it to put out the little bit of effort to get the class c. i mean you never know when rules will change. at least you would be prepared before it happened.

Apparently nobody reads ads. On this very website, everytime it opens, two large black cats growl at me. Above them is the following, "Cargo Vans. No CDL needed." If you don't speak felinese I will translate. No CDL needed to drive a cargo van for Panther.

To get a class C in Ohio, you either have to have an endorsement of Chauffeurs or hazmat. There is no C CDL without an endorsement, been there done that

Hey partner I just translated the few words in the ad. I'm not sure where you're coming from with "Does not say Cargo Vans Exempt!!!" I went to the link you provided and read things like "state of the art" and "basement". Way too scary for me. I'm out of this one. I'm no expert on felinese.

The Panther ad clearly states no CDL is required for cargo vans, but the specific cargo van requirements regarding the CDL isn't mentioned on the Web site. The official stance seems to be that you need a HAZMAT endorsement on your Class C CDL, but they won't kick you out of bed if you don't.

haven't seen the ad, but thier web site as I posted it says O/O needs a CDL as one of their requirements, posted the link, and as moot said it went somewhere else but when I clicked on it it went to panthers ii web page. Heard of drivers working for other owners there not having a CDL but the pay was lower than the regular pay for the cargo van. This came from a driver I was talking too.

Thank You to everybody for your responses. Except for a couple of them. Moot seems to not understand felinese but he seems to know jerkinese. And i think the jarhead must have went to the same school. But again thanks for the responses.

Trust me, as of two weeks ago a CDL is no longer required to operate a cargo van for Panther Expedited Services. It doesn't matter if you are an O/O or drive for an O/O. The web site hasn't been changed yet. Jeff

OK seeing Panther does not require a CDL for a van, how about when a state says that to transport Hazmat as a commercial carrier you have to have a Hazmat endorsement?

Sorry guys/gals for most it is not a big deal not to have a cdl but for many of us feel that if you drive commercially interstate, you should have a cdl. I know that a cdl does not guarantee that they person will be able to drive safely but it does limit the companies who don't care about safety on the road putting on the road people who just hop into a van or truck with a load to drive like an idiot because they have a deadline to meet.

If an idiot goes and gets a CDL, he becomes an idiot with a CDL. The CDL will do nothing to improve his/her driving habits and does nothing to insure that a potential employer can count on any level of competence.
