Well, Fedex isn't one. I have NEVER had a dispatcher tell me to continue if I told them there was a safety issue.

Rah rah?

LoL.

Yes Greg it was directed at your question. Anyone that thinks they need to be a hero at the peril of their own safety needs their head examined and if any company mandates that a driver or O/O drive when they feel it is unsafe is just plain stupid and opening themselves up for lawsuits...and no there was no need for John to answer it, those that contract for with him have his back just as he has ours...and if you really wanted an answer from John, you should have asked him , instead of asking a general question....

Well Dennis, I actually did direct the question to him, seeing he is an active member on EO. I didn't ask it to bash him or his company or for that matter TJ but rather have a CEO's position on safety, driver's latitude on decisions to do with bad weather - WHICH can be important when others don't understand what is expected of them as drivers in some situations.

I asked "Isn't Load-1 concern more about the driver than the load."

It is both a comment and a question but I don't think I need to explain the question or make it into a PM which defeats my purpose in asking openly.

Actually Dale, hate to break the news to you, FedEx is one of the two.

No Greg, you are posting false information. Careful there. A DISPATCHER may question, or encourage you to continue.... but FEDEX will never make you continue. If a DISPATCHER who is not in the area tries that crap, they will be in hot water.

Please don't let your personal bias against Fedex trick you into making sweeping false statements. Everyone from the CC up will tell you the driver makes the decision.

We have never had a problem calling dispatch and talking about the weather and shutting down. If we even mention the weather is threatening it is followed up with the question "Do you feel safe to drive?".

Yes FedEx Custom Critical does want the freight delivered on time every time they do not want to lose a truck though or have an accident claim where the freight is damaged.

Luckily I've escaped the brunt of the storms the few days...But was told by dispatch IF I had the need or thought it was unsafe to stop and let them know and they'd contact the customer...late freight is better then no freight ...

Well Greg, no one said anything about a PM to John...since John is an active poster here, if you wanted to ask the question of hom and have it answered here in the open, then you should have addressed it to HIM and not in the form of a general question....he would have answered..

Now, beyond that, if any driver or O/O doesn't realize that safety is 1st in this type of situation, and think that the freight "must get there no matter what"..then they deserve whatever happens....and i don't think that there are too main "hero's' here that would put themselves in that postion..

Anyone that thinks they need to be a hero at the peril of their own safety needs their head examined and if any company mandates that a driver or O/O drive when they feel it is unsafe is just plain stupid and opening themselves up for lawsuits...

Really?

You serious?

How about those who drive 1500 miles with no real rest?

The point is that there are people who will read some of the things said here and think "I can stay up for 24 hours, so what's hard about driving for 24 hours?"

There was a discussion about this just a few months back about the hours driven in a van and what some say they can do.

Mandating it from the company stand point is another issue, with so many companies out there who don't give a crap, who can say what they say to a driver to convince them into driving in bad weather or when they are tired. I think it is the same issue with the carrier calling the owner to get a driver to take a load, that isn't supposed to happen but it seems to - some consider that forced dispatch.

Isn't it better to have an open and honest discussion without going to through the defensive rhetoric my company doesn't do that to help others understand they are in control, not the company?

and no there was no need for John to answer it, those that contract for with him have his back just as he has ours...and if you really wanted an answer from John, you should have asked him , instead of asking a general question....

Why not have an answer from him?

I thought I did ask him.

OK Hey John, isn't Load-1 concern more about the driver than the load?

There that makes it official, :p

I didn't ask it to bash him or his company or for that matter TJ but rather have a CEO's position on safety, driver's latitude on decisions to do with bad weather - WHICH can be important when others don't understand what is expected of them as drivers in some situations. (yes that is repeated)

It is clear to me that his comments are an asset to the forum because unlike others who speak for a carrier as a contractor, he is an official of a carrier and it matters what he says which will reinforce what you and TJ and others say.

When you asked the question it was formed as a general question and not directed to John, if you wanted John to answer it, then yes you should have used his name as you did in your "Offical" question....

And if anyone reading here doesn't understand that the driver is in charge of the unit they drive, then they shouldn't be considering this or any other transportation business as a driver as a career....yes people are stupid and will do stupid things, but thats on them, not the carriers...and as i said, no carrier is going to mandate that a driver or O/O perform their service when they know it is unsafe or are informed by the driver O/O that doing so would be unsafe....as was pointed out, a dispatcher my make that distake, but I'll bet it would only happen once....

Cheri, are you talking about them thar "ditchspatchers" trying to get you to drive your truck into the ditch? lol Just add a thick southern draw to the word dispatcher and thar you have it "ditchspatcher!"

No 'ditchspatchers' for me! I've never had one "encourage" me to continue if I felt it unsafe, though, I'll say that for them. And for myself, it happens very rarely, and conditions are verifiable when it does, so I don't hesitate to park it when that looks to be the smart thing to do.
Now, if I could just remember that every time I find myself speeding to make a 'hot'! pickup, lol.

I think, Sue, on a truck, a broken anything is contagious, sigh.
Heat's fixed in mine, and Bolt/Bentz replaced the cracked Fantastic Fan cover too [under warranty] at no charge - great guys.
Stay safe & sane [& warm!], I'm about to park it for a week, rent a 4 wheeler, and go home for Christmas. Probably my last chance to spend time with my 'baby' before the Navy gets her.
Where's the emoticon for happy AND sad?! I'm suddenly not ready to let her go.....:(
