Paul is right about the risks of provoking a dangerous situation when confronting a stranger about his or her unacceptable behavior. My own disposition is such that tend to run toward a fight instead of away from one. I'm not saying that is a good thing, but it is my nature to get involved.

I have confronted people in the act of public urination several times and the result is always the same. They respond with an obscenity or obscene gesture and walk off as if they did nothing wrong. An instant later, they will deny they did the deed.

Enter cell phone cameras and a new way to make trouble for those who urinate in the shared spaces others use. Instead of confronting them directly, I will photograph them and make a report (not anonymous) to the police, truck stop manager and the offending driver's carrier.

If these offending drivers start to get the idea that they might be photographed and reported by other drivers who object to public urination, they will think twice before messing up a parking lot and go inside to use a toilet instead.

Again, cell phones with cameras are increasingly common. Using them this way is a way for professional drivers to police themselves and help improve our industry's image for all.

Remember your at a Truck stop not upscale Resturant..........

I would like the public urinators to remember that they are at a truck stop too. Truck stops are NOT open sewers. There is no justification for this behavior. It is wrong. It degrades the quality of life for others that use the space. It degrades our industry. It is a nasty, selfish and disrespectful act. If you want to work where it is OK to urinate in your work space, get a job on an animal feed lot. It is not OK to urinate in a truck stop parking lot, period.

NO its not OK, NO its not right. But the point Im trying to get across is that its going to happen plain and simple and all the complaining is not going to stop it. Face the FACT

All you can do is take care of yourself , You cant change the other guy no matter how hard you try.

You may not be able to change the other guy, but you can modify his (or her) behavior.

We have seen that very thing here in the Open Forum. Flaming is less than it used to be since the Code of Conduct was published and enforced.

In the early 20th Century, a book, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, fueled a firestorm of public debate about unsafe practices and needed reforms in America's meat packing industry. Food safety practices improved as a result.

In our own day and age, smoking in public places, including truck stops, is fading away because of public outrage over second hand smoke. Indoor air quality is improving as a result.

For purposes of this discussion, I granted that you cannot change the other guy. But I do not believe that is true. In my life, I have personally seen people make radical changes in their lives and behavior. Such changes include everything from moving from white collar jobs to blue and vice versa, giving up a life of drugs and crime for something better, changing their political beliefs and voting behavior, and even giving one's life over to Jesus Christ, or from Jesus Christ to another faith.

People can and do change. Sometimes they do it on their own. Sometimes it takes a prison sentance to help them do it. But people can and do change. This is not true for some who never change, but it is true for most.

Public urination is a behavior, not a profession, political party affiliation, right or faith. Behavior modification of it is easy, since the offendors already know what they are doing is wrong, or at least know that most other people think it is wrong.

They don't urinate on city streets where they may be reported. They only do it where they think they can get away with it. This is where camera-equipped cell phones and moderate activism from professional truck drivers can make a difference.

And the point that everyone else is trying to get across is we aren't going to let it happen without some sort of repercussion to the offenders.DD.

You are right. Complaining will not stop it. But ACTION will. The FACT is, if you urinate in a truck stop parking lot and I see you do it, I will photograph the act and report you to the police. If a sufficient number of other drivers took the same stand, the offending drivers would use the toilet and truck stop parking lots would no longer stink of urine.

You may not believe that one person can make a difference. Having done so before, I know different.

If someone gets banned from a truckstop or lease terminated because of public urination, then so be it. After a couple of those, you'd probably see some behavior modification.

I am wondering if any of you know the repercussion of this issue with the public.

I mean that this industry is looked at as a filthy dirty industry with a bunch of cowboys running around in dirty jeans, Stetsons and food on their shirts, throwing piss out the window of their trucks. The public is not sympathetic to any trucking cause because of the image we have already and without self-policing to first change the behavior of the pigs in this industry that will eventually change the public’s attitude, things like emissions and HOS and even road restrictions will never have their support on our side.

I was very disappointed with California, it was a filthy place and I know it was not the RV’s dumping their garbage but the truckers. California I thought would be on the cutting edge of this issue by taking it seriously but no.

I for one want to see involvement from the carriers, I want to see a morals clause in the contracts and I want to see a positive image for the industry but I won’t, may not in my life time. I also want to see truck stops to clean up their act but I won’t because they know that they got us cornered.

As for reporting things, I am reminded by another EO member that public urination also borders on exhibitionism or in other words Indecent Exposure, Sexual Misconduct, Public Lewdness, and Public Indecency – which is a crime everywhere. If you have a child (under 18) with you and there is some guy urinating next to his truck that this child sees, Report them to the cops. Some places will consider that a sexual predator and may well be.

As gross and disgusting as public urination is, let's not once again overreact and work so hard at fake outrage and 'OMG! I'm soooo offended.' It's not like all of a sudden people have discovered that you can urinate in the great outdoors.

I do find it a little hard to believe that someone wold urinate at the fuel island, right there in broad daylight, right there in plain view of the video cameras, and no one thought to have the manager take a look at the video tape and call the police. But hey, I guess it could happen.

If everyone takes the attitude of "it's going to happen. face the fact" then yes, it's going to happen and become more and more common. It's time for people to show some outrage at things like this and act appropriately. With enough people reacting it will make a difference. If everyone just faces the fact then we'll all have piss poor attitudes and be no better than the one doing it.

*The Pissed Off Expedited Truckers Against Public Urination

Some restrictions apply. Restrictions always apply. That's what restrictions do, they apply!

There is nothing fake about my outrage, though "outrage" may be a word that over-describes my response. I do not go into an emotional flurry when witnessing the act, but do find it highly objectionable and worthy of action.

I am glad for this thread. It helped me think ahead and plan ahead for a different reaction next time is see someone urinating in a truck stop parking lot. Next time, I won't just walk away disgusted and frustrated. Next time, I'll have something safer and more effective to do. I have been practicing. If my cell phone is in reach, I can have the camera turned on and photo shot in less than 5 seconds.

To quote my brother-in-law: "When you are a male, the world is your urinal." I hear this from him on the first day of every canoe trip I have made with him.

I find it objectionable, too. My goal is to get them to stop it. I just think there's a better way to do it than by going out of my way to get them into trouble. I know for a fact that I can waste my time a little more frivolously than by sitting around and practicing to become the fastest camera clicker in the west just so that I might achieve the ultimate Truck Stop Kodak Moment.

If you get a picture of him and his Little Richard, that's one thing, but a picture of stale pineapple juice being discarded from a plastic bottle proves little. It's not what you believe, it's what you can prove.

OK ---------If its not a fact, lets see you guys put a stop to it. (I hope you do) But i wouldnt bet the farm on it. We all agree that it shouldnt be done, but with the reality of hundreds of different trucks in there daily Ill be willing to bet 10 years from now it will be the same as today.............. See the World as it is, not the way you want it to be......... If you get this done you should really go after the people that Rape and Murder the dummies that are trying to stop that just cant get it done..............But you caught the guy that dumped the pee out.

Exactly. You can take all the pictures in the world, make all the phone calls you want, and the only thing that will happen is, nothing will change. It might make you feel better, but that won't change a thing. If the problem was that big, that serious, the parking lots would be well lit and well covered with video cameras, and the security guards and police would put a stop to it. They can't even put a dent in lot lizards (I wonder how many here have called the police over that little issue) so don't expect much to change in the way of bladder release enforcement.

And just where do you rinse that bottle? Hopefully not where some people scrub that one tooth left in their head.
