Noone is questioning what OOIDA stands for, but what they have actually been able to accomplish. There are so many things they stand for that have gotten nowhere because of their lack of effectiveness on capitol hill. Yes, more members = more clout....more members = more money to be able to hire the really effective lobbying groups. And yes Broom, I visit their website quite often and still see the SAME issues being shot down again and again. There is a reason for this. I am also a member of PITA. I vote and I pay taxes and I contact state representatives and I have a contact at the FMSCA that I speak to on a regular basis. I believe I am fairly well informed on our issues and what has come up for vote and been shunted off and flat out voted down and why. A strong cooalition would be a good thing....I have yet to see proof that OOIDA is that, in fact I am seeing and being told the opposite. Does this mean I will not support them? no....it means I have look for alternative ways to get my voice heard.

Hey folks. Things don't change on Capitol Hill overnight. These issues really take time. It's never about a simple win. That's just intimidation usually, not lobbying for real answers. We are such a microwave society that we thing if something doesn't achieve immediate results, it's a failed project. Not so.

IMO, I would rather be represented by a professional organization than a union. We are business owners. Sorry, but I am good at what I do. If my carrier won't reward my diligence, then I can go negotiate my spot in another place.

You've never heard of a pita pocket? It's bread. You put meat and veggies in it with a secret sauce and it's yummy.

Without OOIDA (and in most cases, the Teamsters), we have no voice to counter ATA's lobbying. So far, what the ATA wanted, it's gotten. All the more reason to support OOIDA.

Got another dumb statement.

OK all of you are talking about joining the OOIDA.

How many of you die hard fans of the OOIDA are life members?

That shows real devotion.

Just got off the phone with them to fix my application and as I am a life member of a lot of organizations, I figured I would ask and make that a to do item in the near future.

WAAAHH is the sound you hear from workers when the unions squeeze the life out of their company. :p

Being an American means having a choice, not blindly buying what the union tells me to.

The other day I bought both DeWalt (made in Mexico) and a Ryobi (made in China) sanders. DeWalt is a good product that will last for years. Ryobi is half the price, and I'm hoping it will finish the job I bought it for. I could've gotten cheaper at Harbor Freight, but I needed to finish the job without running back and forth to exchange the tool after it keeps breaking. Made in Detroit... what's your opinion of what I should've gotten? Black n Decker makes crap, and isn't even in the US anymore. Fact is, we don't make tools here anymore. It's too expensive. Craftsman aren't even made here anymore, and I stood by that once American made product.

I buy quality if I want it to last for years (DeWalt, Toyota, Honda, Mennonite furniture). If something of quality is made here in the US, I'll buy it before I buy junk from China. Problem is, you can't get clothing made in the US, tools made in the US, or much of anything made in the US. As far as I'm concerned, Toyota and Honda are made in the US, so I will buy that.

What does any of this have to do with expedited trucking? Of course the day is likely to arrive when those products you buy from a third world manufacturer will be delivered to your local China-Mart via third world expedite drivers.
Realize there are more unions operating with company's that are virbrant than there are faltering. Do know also that if you're vested within a retirement maintained by your union it's very unlikely to dissolve as if it were held by a company.
This anti-union rhetoric has grown tired. Most that have posted to vilify the unions they belonged to made it clear their ability to work within and excell was lacking. Those that characterize unions under a shroud of evil haven't researched all unions. It's pointless to persuade those perceptions when they're bleached with the guise of independant work ethic.
I won't parade union membership as the cure all. I know better than that through first hand experience. Yet, and there's always yet, look outside your gang fed preconceived positions for both sides of an issue.
Yet, again, feel free to slice and dice at will.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you. There are precious few left I believe. Getting back on track of the topic of the thread once again, I have upgraded my OOIDA membership to a life membership. My money is where my mouth is. Now get off your collective donkeys and get signed up!
