Well this muddy woman just got her sweet potatoes planted..they sure do look puny when you first plant them! And the lettuce is coming up!

Sis stopped by to see the garden...dug up some cilantro and sage for her. Her corn isn't even up yet and mine is about 6 inches tall. Got some weeding done yesterday and then watered quite a long time..hoping to revive those sad sweet potato plants. And it rained last night and is still sprinkling this morning. Rain is a gardener's friend! The potatoes are about a foot tall, sweet peas are starting to climb up the trellis, should be able to pick a bunch of spinach in about a week and the collards aren't far behind.

I woke up early this morning..was having a bad dream..something about dusting! And caught a young deer in my garden...I let out a war whoop and it ran, but I must be doing something right..it's nipped off the tips of my corn and cropped off the tops of my sweet peas. My pea harvest was about a dozen pods. I'm thinking an electrified fence might be the answer. Or a gun..but then I'd have to clean up the mess!

My favorite deer has a new hobby...it chomps the tops off of my shallots and leaves the bulb for me to pick up off the ground! She's growing on me!

had to powder my cabbage this morning after I finished mowing..I'm going to have cabbage this year as it's already headed up and is getting pretty big.

So I ordered a big pickling crock to make sauerkraut in..going to have at least half a dozen head of cabbage soon.

Nice...If you have even 1Xtra jar I would like first shot @ it..:D. Last time we did it (about 5 years ago) it came out way to salty. Fresh kraut is soooo good.

This is the first time I'll be making it so am making a note to myself...easy on the salt. I think the recipe called for half a cup. Do you remember how much you put in?

Sorry I don't rember its been awhile
I would guess your on track with the recipe. I would say follow what ya got and adjust it next year if need be.
Google may help you by reading a few different ones. If it does come out to salty for your taste you can rinse it a bit before each use but you will lose a lil flavor.

Or undersalt it now and add more later? Just did a garden check..tomatoes are about 3" around, cukes, squash and canteloupe are all flowering and got baby cukes too. Just put a product called
Deer Scram around the garden to keep that bugger out..and was just informed by a Master
Gardener down in Rapid City that it was a waste of time. Looks like Ken's going to have to build a 6' fence around the garden next year.

A hunting license maybe cheaper and for sure a whole lot easier on him.:D
No idea about adding salt later at the table?? I go for the sour flavor.

I think the salt is necessary to pull the moisture out of the cabbage. And not sure about the hunting deer since we're technically within city limits.

Did some weeding yesterday to uncover the leeks, shallots and garlic..which are doing very well! My cabbage heads are about 6-7" around and my pickling pot should be here tomorrow. Today I'm planning on pulling the last of the collard greens and putting them up. :)

I must have picked a laundry basket full of collard greens.. de-stemmed and washed several times and then cooked them up until they reach that beautiful dark green color. I got 5 gallon bags put up and that'll last for the year! I also picked a lot of dill and put it in a bag and stuffed it in the freezer. I just might need them to make pickles. Last year the dill was gone by the time the cukes got big and I didn't get a lot of pickles.
