I'd say that the Soapbox provides far more evidence of intelligence, creativity, and original observations than any other forum, slamming notwithstanding. We are all [presumably] grownups, willing to challenge the words of others - but if we aren't willing to be challenged in turn, then we shouldn't participate. To decline to participate in the Soapbox is one thing, but to withdraw from the whole site is just childish, IMO.
My opinion is that lively argument will keep folks coming back to read ["He said WHAT?!"] while inane personal chat [as the 'location' thread usually fills up with] will drive them away.
EO is always informative, but it needs to be interesting & thought provoking, or it won't survive, much less grow.
That's my penny in the swamp - and as always, rebuttal is welcome.
I agree with MOST of what you have to say on this subject. I do, however, think that there IS too much personal slamming going on. It is not a matter of being adults, it is a matter of behaving in a little more civil manner. It is perfectly fine to knock, slam, whatever, ideas, opinions etc. IF it moves on to personal knocks, name calling etc, it is NOT a good thing.
I am not throwing stones at anyone in particular so no one please think that I am. Just making a statement in general.
