Fox News is either Evil or Stupid.....

I'd say that the Soapbox provides far more evidence of intelligence, creativity, and original observations than any other forum, slamming notwithstanding. We are all [presumably] grownups, willing to challenge the words of others - but if we aren't willing to be challenged in turn, then we shouldn't participate. To decline to participate in the Soapbox is one thing, but to withdraw from the whole site is just childish, IMO.
My opinion is that lively argument will keep folks coming back to read ["He said WHAT?!"] while inane personal chat [as the 'location' thread usually fills up with] will drive them away.
EO is always informative, but it needs to be interesting & thought provoking, or it won't survive, much less grow.
That's my penny in the swamp - and as always, rebuttal is welcome.

I agree with MOST of what you have to say on this subject. I do, however, think that there IS too much personal slamming going on. It is not a matter of being adults, it is a matter of behaving in a little more civil manner. It is perfectly fine to knock, slam, whatever, ideas, opinions etc. IF it moves on to personal knocks, name calling etc, it is NOT a good thing.

I am not throwing stones at anyone in particular so no one please think that I am. Just making a statement in general.

T-Hawk... you are so right. The abuse, vulgarity and just plain meanness put out by Turtle and RLENT is beyond the pale. I do not wish to be associated with this behavior. No one in a position to stop this activity will do anything about it. There are no good options left. In protest, I am withdrawing my participation here at EO.

Sorry you feel that way, Aristotle. It's not what I meant tho. I'm saying Turtle hit the nail on the head, mostly in his first sentence. People look for a number of handles to read, particularly in the Soapbox. This then becomes a clique forum. And since I don't post to jack my post counts up, I quit posting.

Perhaps a lot of animosity could be avoided during the heat of discusson if people would just stick to the subject matter, make a pro or con argument and justfy their position with the facts or logic that supports it. To assume that someone is lacking in IQ just because they disagree with another's opinion is arrogant, to say the least. If someone appears to lack the reservoir of experience in a certain subject matter, they can be enlightened without being personally denegrated.

We can also get along better without the snarky insinuations that imply someone's intellect is lacking or that they have some sort of character flaw. A prime example of this tactic is a quoted opinion from someone's post followed by "Ya just can't make this stuff up". If there's a disagreement with the opinion just say so, and explain why without the unnecessary oblique ridicule.

After all, the vast majority of the time we're talking about OPINIONS here. Quite often there's an extemporaneous conversation going on, and the participants might say something occasionally that's factually incorrect - but that happens all the time in face-to-fact converstions and it's usually not a big deal. If things get to the point where people are reluctant to voice their opinion then the forum dries up. Of course we should be able to support our opinions and tolerate those of people who disagree - but that can certainly happen without the labeling and personal put-downs.

But Pilgrim, if you are wrong all that's left to you is to insult the other person's intelligence, intellect, sexuality etc. etc..

To complain of "abuse, vulgarity, and just plain meanness" after having contributed this [among others, especially post #20] example of style & substance is the zenith of hypocrisy.
And you just can't stand having it pointed out, so you take your ball & go home.
Bye.
This individual might like to take his ball(s) and go home...but he doesn't have any....

I love the Hot Women on Fox. They are smoking hot. Sometimes they are stupid, but they sure are pretty to look at.

The really really sad part is we have politicians who feel they need to be part of the cesspool of entertainment...

In Minnesota we have entertainers who feel they need to be part of the cesspool of politics.

I will attempt to veer from the banter...

Fox News is neither evil or stupid.

They've got Megan Kelly.

I actually put forth a sincere overt gesture to Aristotle in a PM, one that included an apology to him for anything I may have said or done that would cause him to take such a radical departure from his normal lucid, intelligent and engaging comments, to that of a series of unwarranted and blatant personal attacks towards me and other EO members that come off as being somewhat unstable. I have always respected his opinions even when I disagreed with them, and always looked forward to reading whatever he posted. It's a little disturbing to witness someone's mindset and thought processes change so dramatically and so quickly, so I wondered what, if anything, I may have done to set it off. I had it all typed in here as a reply, but decided to go to him directly about it in private. I figure he at least deserved that much. Alas, rather than deal with me directly, he chose to continue his attacks, even more blatantly, here in public. That's sad, I think.

You are just so compassionate.

Perhaps, as a child, he inhaled too much coal dust...
