When I got my double by-pass operation on August 12, 1997, and the doctor told me is was from smoking, it was a great incentive to stop, which I did and have never looked back at starting again. Today I breath easier and feel much better.

I still get the urge to smoke and it has been almost two years for me. Last time I smoked two cigarettes was 4 months ago right before I went into the hospital for my blood clot. I was caughing up green stuff for 6 weeks straight. I took that as sign that me and cigarettes are never going to be friends again. I loved to smoke. I like to drink soda, coffee, eat good food, and smoke cigarettes. But I can't smoke anymore due to my health!

You just have to quit cold turkey and just force yourself to stay away from them. Also there is a psychological aspect to quitting that most people do not realize. It's called environmental que's. If you hang around in the same places and with the same people that you used to when you were a smoker "in some cases with drug addicts they can actually feel high without taking any drugs" you can relapse very easily.

I had to stop hanging around with the other expediters in the parking lot because when they were lighting up it made me want to light up. Other than that you have to have a really deamatic life-changing event to motivate you to stop smoking. It was hard for me. It took me years of on and off smoking to finally kick the habit completely. But getting sick was the number one motivating factor for me. I wish you the best of luck.

When we quit a few years back we did gain weight. We went on a healthy diet and walked everyday as soon as we quit. Still gained weight.

I smoked 40 years, quit cold turkey in 2004 when they put stents in my thigh. Drank a lot of water and always had mentholiptus cough drops on hand. I was smoking 3 - 5 packs a day when I quit. Good luck.

All that money for cigs. You could be retired with a nice fat IRA paying out good dividends. I'm glad you quit it does help improve your quality of life.

Just keep suckin' em down until, one evening, your left arm starts to tingle and go numb, you break out in a sweat and you have extreme tightness in your chest. About then you'll think you MIGHT have a problem - and it's time to check yourself into an emergency room.

After that quitting won't seem nearly as difficult...even after 30 years of smoking!

One of my old firefighting buddies just had quadruple bypass surgery. He smoked, a lot. He has quit. Says it is amazing that within a week he could smell and taste again. Don't know how he is going to keep the weight off but he says he feels MUCH better and breathes easier.

overweight will kill you before the smokes do....how many 75 yr old fat guys ya see around?...

Lots, my Dad for one. He has been over weight for the better part of 60 years. He will be 90 in Oct. Most of his uncles lived to be 80+ years old and all were overweight. I know MANY people who fit that bill.

Here's a good tip on how to cut way back. Don't smoke in the truck.
I cut back from 2 packs a day to less than 1 every 2-3 days.

I had to accept two truths: 1) I am a nicotine addict and therefore there is no such thing for me as "just this one" - every time I smoked "just this one", I ended up smoking as many as before and had to quit all over again; and 2) The NEED to have a cigarette passes in a few days, but the WANT to have a cigarette will never go away - you just have to keep saying no.

Keep your mouth busy with non-foods such as coffee stirrers, straws, sugar free gum and mints. Also, the nicotine gum worked well for me -- just don't transfer your addiction to that instead of smokes. :)

Good luck and keep us posted.

Quit two years ago using the patches. They REALLY take the edge off while doing it. Still want to just say "screw it" and go in and buy a couple of packs. Not worth it. I haven't had any weight gain from quitting tho, so I can't help ya there.

Good luck!

I had quit a few years ago for about three months. The hardest part was that Nick still smoked. The first week was the hardest, and I snapped at the littlest things. I found using dum dum pops to be the easieat thing for me. Unfortunately I ended up starting again when Nick had gone in for emergency surgery. I actually lost weight, about 10 pounds, when I quit smoking. I had no appetite and felt sick to my stomach quite often. Best of luck to you!

I never quit smoking but I gained the weight anyway.

I never let my mother smoke in my house until I caught her sneaking a smoke in her room after brain cancer surgery.

Only then did I turn a blind eye. It also made me realize what a strong addiction it is.

I smoked for 42 years, quit cold turkey. Of course when the Dr told me I had stage 3 lung cancer, it was a hell of an incentive.

Am I the only e-cigarette ST operator? Smoked for 30 years and quit in one week. Hint....it's not the nicotine that has you hooked (so much). I really enjoy driving and reaching for the vanilla tobacco, Cavendish pipe vape, or the occasional menthol liquid.

No more cough, no more burning paper, no more stinky. Not advertising or promoting a product...but vaping and expedite trucking is a fun adventure at times. Quitting the analogs proved a difficult venture and did it twice. Quitting e-cig/nicotine only? Could do it right now.

Again, it's not so much the nicotine.

I've heard good things about the e cigs...been thinking of trying it out. My other half smokes nonstop, and we both need to quit.
