I agree that this subject has been beaten like a red-headed step child. But, I really have to ask one question. Well, one and a follow up.

Phil, why is it important to have a precise formula? And, as someone who has claimed to have a background in financial dealings of some sort, why can't you come up with something that satisfies your parameters, whatever they may be?

For me, I invested in a truck and I'm getting a return on that investment. Some formula providing exact percentages isn't important to me. IMO, you've turned the discussion into more of a debate than it needed to be.

There isn't any precise formula! That's the problem. Everyone's circumstances are different. People can sit here and explain all these formulas THEY use for THIER business. It will not apply to you or me.

It's like trying to calculate a ROI when buying a home. Each family has a different set of circumstances that determines what that will be. What's your interest rate, how many major repairs do you need, do you ever have to remortgage, how much money do you make at your job in order to pay it off early etc etc etc.

Same thing with a truck: Who do you run for, maint costs, truck payments, fuel mileage and expenses, driver pay..etc etc etc

Nobody is the same! So it's apples and oranges

I didn't know their was a problem here. Phil and DaveKc are great people so lets just leave it at that. I thought everyone was having some fun. Sorry if I upset anyone on my comments on ROI.

Well I for one am very glad that all of the bantering that had been invested in this topic has finally paid off dividends.
Rest in peace ROI.

Yes, everyone's circumstances are different. That just means that one persons ROI would different than the next person's. Driver A spends 20k for a truck that gets 10mpg. Driver B spends 150k for a truck that gets 8mpg. The same formula would apply, the result will be different.

Dave, sorry to see a good thread get hi-jacked like this. Such is life in the World Wide Web, I guess. :)

It was expected, and actually predicted by many. But....I agree, its the WWW
No apology needed.

Another observation is that so many drivers want to be solo's. They are limited in how many miles they can do and never get into elite services. Plus it's very hard for the owner to make any money on the deal. Like I said in another post I am trying to give this industry a fair shake. I had a bad first month with one truck down between orientations and truck repairs. I need to see how the trucks do this month because they have been in opperation full time this month. I also have better drivers that select loads with good fuel supplements. I am working on getting two of the drivers to team up and I have to keep a solo in the other truck until I can find a person willing to team. Teams have less fuel waste because they are not idling in parking lots for long periods of time. The length of haul makes a big difference. At the same rate repairs will come more quickly and the truck will lose value due to rapidly increased milage.

One thing to consider is that I have found that putting two people from separate households together can be difficult.
It would be seldom that I have seen these types of teams last for any length of time.
Always a first or second time though.
Personalities, personal habits, home-time and length, are all big factors.
Supporting three families out of one truck is usually difficult unless one out of the three knows how to locate freight and keep the truck running very consistently.
Also, if these two drivers don't live close together, distance to homes and other issues will affect that trucks ability as well.
If the truck requires service and the like, which driver assumes that responsibility?
A lot of issues and aggravation come in to play with these setups.
We have done some in the past, but they were on dedicated runs, which weren't perfect, but a little more workable.
