Finding your own loads

I guess you can call me dumb about this but I have no idea or clue on how to find your own loads, I dont have any clue on where to get this information, if anybody has the time could they please reply to this and maybe just give me the basics and advise about finding your own loads.
I just purchased a sprint pc interenet card so I can go online anytime in the truck, which i guess is what you need, so that you can go online and find a load, also ive seen sites such as getloaded.com and it gives so many descriptions about what kind of truck you have, flat bed, reefer, etc. but none for a straight truck , so what is a straight truck refered as? ( hs- hotshot? )

again any info you could give would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance - john -

I believe you would be looking for LTL (less than truckload)loads. I dont know if they have a classification for expedited loads.

He is correct as they will be listed as LTL
On other sites they may be listed differently. Some are listed as HS or hot shot. The other common one is partials.
Make sure you know the exact dimensions of your truck including door opening and the weight you can carry.

o/o till i die

On getloaded you choose van as truck type and ltl instead of full

to load a straight truck.like others said some will be under hotshot

Just to put in my two cents, there are companies that find the loads for you. But, you might want to even look for 'partials' on the load boards, like the boards in the truck stops.

Hey Whitewolf 53
Thanks for your concern, you truly are a great friend for worrying about me : )
One reason I want to learn about finding my own loads is to expand my business ( as a businessman ) not just a driver who gets loads from his company.
The other reason is to except loads out west and to be able to find my own loads back east.
11 months strong here ( honeymoon ended after the 1st week ) It's almost time for that 1st anniversary.
I love panther I wouldn't work for any other company
so again for all you con-way rejects who dont like this company then leave go to landstar,fed-ex, or whatever, but dont hang around

P.S. thanks again Mike your the Man!!! ;)

okay now I'm lost ..or Pantherii Owns His Own truck just like the Others that responded to His question ....or can even a leased driver find loads or do We have to depand on Our companies to find them ....has I recall when I was in Ca. back in June sitting in Hesperia, Ca a man walked up and asked Me if I would rent out the truck to move his family to denver for 3,000 I said I was waiting for a load and wasnt sure if I could take his ....but if a leased driver can find loads then I pasted up an easy 3grand ....

Sounds like you passed up your three grand.
That is one of the advantages of signing on with a company that lets you obtain your own freight. Much better than extended sitting or excessive deadheads.

Why didn't you just go out of service????
Tell the company you were going to deadhead to Denver.
Make up your own bill of lading. And pocket a quick 3 grand????

Because if something would've happened on the way to Denver, Panther would've rightly said they had nothing to do with the load, and the driver is SOL! Are you sure you're an expediter?

THawk is correct. It would be foolish to run something like that without the necessary insurance and authority. There is more to it than simply filling out a bill of lading.

I am very sure that i am an expeditor.
And i would have taken that load for 3 Grand.
Sometimes you just have to take a chance.
And if some body would have flashed 3 grand
in my face i would have taken it in a minute.
Maybe you are just too much company oriented.
I try to make as much money as i can whenever i can.
And 3 grand is not chicken feed for a couple of days driving.
How long does it take you to put 3 grand in your pocket???
i bet it is a lot longer than a couple of days

I'd say the most important question isn't how long would it take to make 3 grand, but how fast could you lose 10 times that much, if things went south, real fast, like they do sometimes - especially when you take a chance...

whitewolf53

Expert Expediter
Cheri122: It really doesn't matter about that. How many times have you been pulled over in a weigh station in the last year????
I can count on one hand how many times i have been pulled over.
They do not screw around with us like they do the 18 wheelers.
All i am saying is i would have taken my chances and tried to put a quick 3 grand in my pocket.
if i had gotten caught then i would have to pay the piper.
But 3 grand for a couple of days driving is just to good to pass up.

The weigh stations would be the least of my concerns - it's the risk of the guy you're doing it for deciding to sue you, for damaging something of his, or the other drivers who do incredibly stupid things that cause accidents, that I'd worry about! I guess you see the glass as half full, & I see it as half empty, is all.

Well As t-hawk said Panther would have said too bad and may also terminated your lease. The thing that I am wondering about is what if you get caught carrying household goods in your truck and the carrier is not registered to do so?

Also thinking about this, the insurance maybe different on the liability end of things. For that matter you may not be covered for a thing, depending on your insurance policy.

As Cheri said this may cost you more than 10 times the amount you get but I would say the legal fees may be about that - the out of court settlements may be 50 times as much if you get in an accident.

$3000, I would have told him there is a company call Bekins that does a really good job.
