You know there is a lot of reasons not to do this, there are equally number of reasons to point out the problems here with the mods, but when you come down to it, it is utterly amazing that the ones who want location only seem to be the ones who should be concerned with safety of their loads and themselves.
I think the major carriers are lax in telling their contractors about safety, about what's going on in their carrier about incidents and problems but most importantly this seems to be the indicator that they treat the contractors like children - you do not need to know that stuff.
Location info can work against people, it has for me and someone else here. The problem is there are more out there than what we think there are. Information gathering, even sublime info, is sometimes a key to knowing what's going on. Joe and others can confirm this.
Self-promotion on other sites seems to be a big deal - we did this and hauled that because we are special. It leads sometimes to really great info that no one should have.
I think my experience seems to tell me there are issues with what a mod is and should do then there is what happened in one thread or another. On the sites I have had a hand in, the mods don't sit there and do counterproductive things, they act as traffic cops to move the content along. In the case of the original thread, an attempt would have been made, a warning issued and it would have been locked for a day to settle everything. Creating another thread to counter the original thread, deleting content and so on is counterproductive and leads to a war of sorts. It would have been better to actually get involved for both the mods and those who wanted to see "location only" stuff, then to cry about it and act childish.
I don't want to see EO become a boring site, like another one out there. I feel Lawrence et al, has it right not to have it reflect themselves but the community at large. If this doesn't bode well with people, well I can't say much about that.

Leo's idea is good, originally the monthly location thread was about location, but it is a good place to just get together and chew the fat so to speak and I'd like to see it continue as it is. Does anyone here really care about post count? I mean really!!!

Truckpipes you have to understand your time is not nearly as valuable as some on here. They cannot be bothered with the extra two seconds it takes to skip over something they do not wish to read. Instead it is much better for them to have two sections for locations so now everyone must either post their location in both areas and read both threads to see where people are at. You see only some peoples time is important. IMHO the whole thing is petty and stupid.

You are correct. I seldom post our location. I did so today today because it's a long weekend. Diane and are not under load. We are doing some socializing. We happen to be at or near truck stops, which is also not our norm. I also wanted to show support for Leo's experiment.
I seldom post our location because many of our loads have security protocols attached. We simply don't talk about where we are or where we are headed for that reason. Even with my daily blog you will see the posts delayed by a day or more and specific locations not discussed.
Leo's experimental location thread is not a concern but a welcome addition. When we are laid over someplace, it will be nice to do a quick check to see who else is in the area without having to read through the banter. As the original locations thread was, I stopped reading it a long time ago because of the banter.

The original location thread was started by members and had no specific posting requirements. It evolved to what it is today. To go in and restrict it to city state and parking location would not be returning it to what was intended since there was no specific original intention. Additionally, many members like it as is with mention of a location and however many unrelated follow up posts.
A number of members expressed a desire for a simple to read, quick to check way to see if anyone from EO was nearby. The thread I started at the request of members seemed to fulfill their requested goal. I'm not sure why it upsets some for a group of members to get what they want from the forum.

So your simple and easy method now requires people to either read two threads or for everyone to post in two threads to find everyone's location who may post it? Who decides what banter is ok? I have noticed in your new thread some people post more than just a strict location in your new thread, so is it ok to type as much as you want as long as it is in the post that contains the location or will you begin policing anything extra words that is not a city state or place? What happens when your offline for a few days do people get to post what they want or are you going to assign a vice banter czar? Maybe it should be like twitter and the number of characters is limited per post. Although on the surface it might be a neat idea when broken down it is anything but.

Who's mod'ing the moderators?
I think this experiment blew up, because a moderator tried to do a personal experiment while exerting the power of their moderatorship. It should have been done as a personal experiment or addressed in a moderatorly fashion. Combining the two methods became heavy handed creating the expected backlash.
It's the same complaint I had about the recent FedEx/dog thread. Instead of moderating, a moderator chose to use their position to publicly air a personal grievance.
As for banter, I thought that is what the Layover Lounge is all about.

Seems to me I have an option. If I want to know where people are, I can look in the thread showing only location. If I want to know where people are and what they're doing and what's on their mind, I can look in the original thread. Everyone has a choice as to which threads throughout EO they use; if one doesn't want to be "censored (way too strong a word IMO) we can say whatever we want in the original thread. If Leo had said his was now the ONLY thread members could use to show location, and could be used for location only, then yes, I would say that goes against the principal of these boards. All he proposed is an additional thread, with short, easy-to-read info on location. I don't know why such a big deal was made of it.
Then again, I'm always in Brookfield; maybe I don't have a dog in this fight. But there's not one in my bunk, either. Wait, that's a different thread...

Seriously, an extra 60 seconds or so to get up to date on that thread is a big deal? There was some kind of "whatever you want" thread for a while, I forget the name of it, but it died off.

Some of you guys really need to get more load offers from your carrier or get a life or get something. I didn't just think this up and five minutes later there it was. A number of members said they'd like to know if someone was nearby but it wasn't always easy to do. This seemed a workable solution.
If the location is given and a little more info added that's ok. What isn't ok is multiple posts that are nothing but chatty visiting and bull shooting in between. Extra info is fine and can be a good thing if it helps folks get together. All of these would be good.

Well, since you didn't advocate shooting those that banter I don't have a problem with you. It just shifts the perceived hassle of extra time to those that would have to use both threads so they could have everyone see where they're at. I mean, really, we're talking about literally just extra seconds to skim the banter you don't want to read closely.
