Nice post didn't see that one when I was looking up about which wY the Nissan was going to get out in front of the car driver was at fault in this case.

NBC news is saying that a witness has seen FedEx truck on fire B 4 it has cross the median.

I wanna know where the **** guardrail is! The median strip looks to be sand and bushes; like that's gonna hold back a semi. Same basic deal on Wed in Carlisle PA: SUV crosses median, hits semi head on. Snapped the cab & sleeper clean off the frame. Both drivers deader'n hell :(

Barrier only required if roadways are 50' apart or less.
The roads were 60' apart where the accident happened.

Strange fact that has no bearing on the accident.
This was the second accident of the day for the bus.
It had an earlier accident. The driver was replaced, and it was running late.

accident last year in Dayton....in a rain storm in the construction zone there semi hit the concrete barrier obliterating it, jumping cab into on coming lane and tossing chucks of concrete, taking out numerous vehicles...barrier did little good maybe even caused more damage in this case...

Never a perfect answer, but barriers probably help more than they hurt. Looks like the truck was on fire when it went out of control.

I85 in South Carolina has those cables and I agree it does not stop large vehicles; however, it does a lot more good! At least it slows them down some.:)

I've seen an 18 wheeler get into the median and go into the cables. The cables straightened the rig up and let it slow down to a stop without getting out of the median. I like them. It did send debris from the ground and the truck all over the oncoming traffic though.

It would have differing results due to weight, speed, angle of impact, density of ground, and vehicle construction.

Overall probably a good thing.
I imagine there are more out of control 4 wheelers than 18 wheelers.

At the first hint of smoke any reasonable driver would pull over and investigate.

FedEx Freight probably has as fine of a fleet of Equipment as any similar carrier.
I've never seen a shop, large or small, that didn't look well run and orderly.
The age of the fleet appears to be pretty young.

Overall, they appear to be doing everything right.

This should be a wake up call to everyone to get your affairs in order. Young or old.

And this should be shared with all shop people. New engine compartments are very hot. Leave a hose chaffing or a clamp lose and you can be spraying flammable liquids where they can ignite quickly.
Also protect against electrical fires.

You worry about a simple breakdown. What if your error caused something like this ?

I heard of a tie rod end falling off a truck with less than 50 miles on truck.
Luckily the truck was moving slowly thru the yard.

It'll be interesting to hear what the NTSB finds.
Up until then we can only speculate.

Since the lady said flames were coming from under the cab, the driver may have paniced and panic braked, Doubles and Tripples will jack knife when that happens, Could it be a tire fire started this?

Just thought about another thing, could he have had a Lithum battery pop and was knocked out by the fumes. I imagin that if this was a Hazmat reacation in the pup, he
Could have stopped safely and If it was Hazmat on board they would have announced by now.

IF Kennedy would've ducked. I hate what ifs.
And that's what differentiates the brothers Kennedy. John didn't duck and spilled the contents of brain pan in his wife's lap and all over the upholstery of a fine Lincoln convertible and died. Bobby didn't duck and spilled his blood all over a Los Angeles hotel floor and died. Edward (call me Teddy) made like a duck and swam away, spilling only his drink. He continued on to what would become a 47 year stint as the Senator From Massachusetts and then he died. Duck, duck, grey duck.

I'm sure all of them goosed a few.

A spokesperson for the NTSB reports there is no evidence that the driver of the truck braked before the impact.

Also stated the bus operator had a good safety record.

Wonder if the truck caught fire because of a fault in the regeneration cycle? If it had one of course.

Same spokesperson said they can't corroborate that the truck was on fire before the crash.
