Fast Food Strike: Workers Walk Out In US Cities

The auto industry has not been small franchises, other than some dealerships, for a VERY long time. Fast food stores are often individual small business, not much different in many ways than a one truck expediter.

Yes, markets change, there is always change. Change seldom comes without a lot of pain and change caused by bums who are just too darn lazy to upgrade their skills to make a better living is just wrong. Even worse when many of those who are crying have many luxuries.

I wouldn't say ALL in the fast food industry have NO skills.....remember if food isn;t handled properly it could kill customers...there is a degree of knowledge there for the ones that make it a FULL time profession....It isn't without some skill and knowledge....remember we are just dumb drivers....unskilled and ALL high school dropouts to the general public....we don't have that much higher standing then a fast food professional...

There are some states that have laws mandating sanitation training for anyone working in an establishment that serves food. When I was young and had a job as a dishwasher, I had to take it. But it's really just ticking a box to get your certificate so you can get a paycheck. It was really only applicable to managers & supervisors.
As for fast food workers, they generally care even less. I pick up this piece of food, put it on the bun, squirt done of this goop on it, and wrap it up. That's really the only thought that goes into it. All their skill & knowledge comes from minutes of watching a video or two and being shown how to operate the station they're working. Maybe it's different in the GWN.
Here, they don't have so much as a fraction of the amount of responsibility a truck driver has.

Fast food is a place to start developing skills. Teamwork, leadership, customer service, how to budget a paycheck etc. It is up to the individual to take advantage of that. Most truck drivers do have more skills in some regards but seeing the buffet habits or people skills some have I would not want to see them across the counter taking my order.

That's an OJT issue. "If you see the onion mix turn pink, tell the manager right away."

It's kind of like when I was a guard. I had guard jobs where I was the one with responsibility, taking actions & making all the decisions, and I had other guard jobs where my only duties were to observe and report to the only people authorized to do those things. Fast food is more like the latter.

Like most occupations...you can make the best of it...or worst of it....some show responsibility and actually learn some useful life skills as Xiggi said and some well....it is just a job...I dunno....did that burger flipper use the 5 second rule on YOUR burger?....

Sounds like you have a problem understanding value vs. skills vs need. They is zero comparison between a expedite cargo van driver or a burger flipper. I think the REAL problem is that you are so steeping in the socialist all is equal doctrine that you can't see the forest for the baseballs. :p

I did NOT say anything about "Canadian". You have a complex about that :p

The socialist part is the idea that EVERY job should pay a "living wage". That is sheer BaLoWkNeE! Jobs should pay ONLY what the product or service that covers that wage can support and still allow for the owner to make a profit. The owner IS entitled to that, the owner put up the capital and is taking the risks. The "flipper" is putting almost nothing into it. There is little margin in a burger joint, not nearly enough to cover a $15.00 per hour. ALSO, keep in mind that is NOT the bottom line. As wages goes up the OWNER has to pay HIGHER SS taxes on those wages, costing him even MORE money. THAT is likely behind this. Higher wages, higher taxes. Just ANOTHER way to rip off small business owners.

You are no fun today, I am PICKING on you! LOL!!:p

No, this is not "business". This is being organized by leftist (Obama bums) community organizers. It would not surprise me to find that it is being funded by taxpayer dollars.

They care about those workers about as much as they did that Martin kid. It is just a smoke screen. Just another way to tax small business owners OUT of business. Look for the formation of a 'burger flipper" union and a "pickle dud" union etc. ALL paid for by dollars extorted from hard working people in the form of crippling taxes.

I didn't mean to start a war between you two. I was just being sarcastic to OVM. In reality I respect and admire Canadians for being a great friend to the USA. ;) Now, as for the Brits . . .

Speaking of that, I heard Obama is saying that the tax rate on small businesses should be 40%. That'll kill quite a few and do a lot more damage to the economy.

There are adults that work in fast food and support a family. Im sure most of them collect welfare of some sort just like walmart workers. What it comes down to is do we pay the service worker enough to support his family or do we pay higher taxes to pay for his food stamps and health coverage. If its all about free open markets let the south americans in to drive for 10 cents a mile

What out comes down to is that these low wages exist because they can. Like you say, if they don't make enough, they collect welfare, Medicaid, WIC, etc. If those programs didn't exist and they couldn't afford to work for those wages, those employers would have to pay more or close. Another strike against the welfare state...

Welfare is not a government function. Much of the mess we are in is because of the welfare state. The idea of personal responsibility has been forgotten by many. What makes people think that because they CHOOSE not to have needed skills or refuse, for what ever reason, to move work that pays enough, that some how it is the responsibility of other's to pick up their slack?

I think ALL of the companies targeted should shut down for just 2 days...Sunday and Monday...then see what happens to these idiot strikers from their peers...peer to peer works best in most situations to get people back on track...
