You had exclusive use loads and air freight loads, but the use of the smaller trucks didnt start 'til 1978,with Tri State, and 1979 Roberts Express.About the computers, first company with qual com was Schneider.second was Roberts.THere were a couple companies that wanted Roberts to use their computer systems but they wanted Roberts to invest the money to build the system.None of these computer systems came along til the 1980s
As far as in house computers,or computerized freight, many companies in the early 70's were doing this, but in truck computer system happened early 1980
The Idea of the smaller trucks, had nothing to do with the bumpy roads or hih value freight,it was shippers could get a truck size for the freight they were hauling,Instead of paying exclusive use for a tractor trailer.WHy use a 48ft trailer for 1 pallet. When I was hauling produce in 1981,I use to get exclusive use loads from the broker I was useing, sometimes just 1 pallet, but it paid better than truck load, when I started at Roberts, that 1 pallet would have been on van,and the pay would have been much less than I was getting from my broker
