so here it is a Saturday...both up all day doing the tourist thingee...7pm a call....now BOTH parties have been up all day and someone has to do the first shift....

Ok so your a solo driver and been up all day and get a call for a 7pm pu. What's the difference. At leaset with a team one can catch some sleep and relieve the other later in the drive unlike a solo.

The issue is...the one that has to drive the first shift...

Well I mentioned H/W because they are the ones likely to do things together and want to be together, while just teams may not.

Regardless how you want to cut it, the word NO needs to be added into the vocabulary of all teams and solos when it comes to sleep.

If we could always say YES when it comes to sleep, there wouldn't be a problem.....:p
Sorry - that was toooo easy. I appreciate that you're all about safety, but here's the thing: the whole concept of 'one size fits all' is just asinine. People are like snowflakes: all the same, but all different. We don't all need the same amount of sleep, and some can function quite well with an irregular sleep 'schedule'. [Any idea how much sleep residents/brand new doctors get when they're on call? Sometimes none, for 48 hrs, and that's ok, right?]
It just kills me, though, that the overwhelming majority of truck vs car crashes are the car's fault, but they keep finding ways to make the truck 'safer'.

And if your a solo and been up all day you have to drive the first shift. It makes no difference if it is a team or solo the point is mute.

Depends on the point of view...true...but the issue of the thread is safety and tired driving.....the one driving is supposed to be the fresh driver

That said I guess if its a 15 hr drive one could do only 5hrs and give it over to the one that had a nap...

Right the issue is tired driving. If your a solo or a team it makes no difference. Are you trying to say it ok to drive tired as a solo but a team should never drive tired, time for a reality check.

I can just see someone with multiple personality disorder trying that one on the LEO: "Honest, Officer - Sybil has been asleep for 12 hours!" :D

We need to give our goverment a big round of applause for doing away with split sleeper berth ! I wish they would get on the same page-or even open the same book ! and those sleep studies ? must be nice to get 8 every night. try sleeping thru the boro's of NY.

Problem with the HOS is that it doesn't take into account if someone is tired. 8 hours in a blizzard and a person might be worn out but because of HOS they can't take a 1 hour nap, so they keep going for two or three more hours.
Problem is without HOS you are going to have amped up super truckers who want to drive for 30 hours.
Unfortunately there is no easy answer and the way HOS is set up just makes people feel safe. If I am tired I pull over and take a nap. Also, while some people may need 9 hours of sleep some may only need 5 or 6 to be safe.
I need at least 8 hours to feel good, but my wife rarely gets 6 for example

Also, just because someone spends time in the sleeper berth doesn't mean they are rested, I am sure I am not the only one with insomnia an sometimes don't sleep at all. Legally you would be ready to go, but physically not really.

We all get tired and from what I can see the solo's have it the worst as they never know when a load will be offered.

As a team after time off we also have to make the decision or we capable of running the load being offered?

The LDWS is an aid the same as a GPS and something I felt others could look at and make their own minds up about. I know how it has benefited us the same as our GPS has also benefited us.
