Rich,
Since there is no retirment plan that thanks you for your years of service to this industry why dont you just print up about 3,000 tickets and sell a chance to win your truck for $5 bucks a pop.I would take 10

Just wondering the legalities of running a raffle, would that be legal?
In my mind it should be legal, the dam-n gov should stay the hell out of our lives. Although I don't know if the gov would view a raffle as gambling and you would need a permit. Maybe online it would bypass any need for permits, I don't know.

Rich... when you say you ALSO have this truck, what's your other truck?

Mileater,
Yes most of the states do view this as gambling, there are exceptions tothe rules. In somestates the bond is more that the truck is going for and in others the paper work needed to hold the event is more than the truck weighs. Almost all raffles are held by non-profits in all 50 states.

The only state that I am told that would allow something like this (of course for non-profits) without paper work or bonds is the great state of Wyoming.

If it was legal and Rich would sell tickets, I would also buy 10.

A thought that I have is a sweepstakes as a promotion. there is an odd law in michigan that allows a business to hold a sweepstakes for it's customers. a customer may have to purschase a product of service to qualify (according to the AG of michigan). Just a thought.

OH I forgot, how about a texas hold'em poker party, that I think is legal.

Well maybe rich could sell greeting cards and send them via pm
each greeting card could have a tracking number and say when rich sold x amount of greeting cards then he could donate the truck to some lucky greeting card buyer.

I am sure someone can improve on this idea and come up with a fair way to determine what greeting card number would be picked
like a random number generator or something.

KW express said; "would be picked like a random number generator or something."

You know that the lottery has great random numbers daily - sometimes twice a day. Sell a greeting card for $7 and have a 1000 to sell, there you go the three digit is 123 and so greeting card 123 is a winner.

Just a thought.

But I was kinda hoping he could make a little bit more than 7k off the truck I was thinking more along the lines of 10k $10 a pop

I mean really whats $10 for a guy that didnt give up untill he had to and says he would do it all over again.
one less buffet at the the J.

I think he should go into the greeting card biz for 100 days
he just needs 10 good promoters that could sell 1 card a day
or 100 bad promoters that could sell 1 card every every 10 days.
I would probabley be more to the bad promoter side myself cause when I run its out and back and dont spend much time talking to people.

but I would donate 1 day a week at the local J "evansville,IN"
talking to the expediters that come by maybe show them a some pics of the truck and give them richs e-mail if they would care to participate they could just drop him a line and set-up the transaction.

I guess the real question is there 1,000 truckers out there or even 100 that would buy 10 cards that really care about the fellow expediters?

I bet if we put our minds to it we could have all the cards sold in 30 days or less.

my next question would be how would we convince the participants that the drawing was truley random?

well I know a random number generator is simple enough. I did it once to show me every possible combination of six digit numbers for the IL. lottery and of course it come up with more combinations than I could ever afford to buy so dont look for me to win anytime soon.

but we would need to be able to log onto the same site and watch the drawing live any ideas where we could all go to do this?

of course before we start I guess we should wait and see if richs truck sells on ebay.

I hate ebay a few years back I sold a jeep on there and the buyer sent me a conterfeit cashiers check that I put in the bank and the dam bank didnt catch it for 3 weeks. I had half the money spent before they told me it was fake.they held the check for 7 days then credited it to my account I thought it was all said and done.

and I guess we need to find out if rich is even interested in doing this.and if you are let me know cause I got some more ideas to sweeten the pot a little.

KW Iam open to ALL suggestions, actually whoever buys this truck is getting a pretty decent unit. So far I have had a bunch of inquires from people that want to make payments. I explain that I am not a finance company and understand that I will receive one payment and then the excuses will start. Kids are sick, wife has car trouble and so on.

KW,
I based the price on the target price on eBay.

As for the lottery, I have to say to be legal in some regards, the lottery is going to be the best source for a 3 digit number. Of course this all has to pass his state's laws to prevent a gambling charge but I think it is doable.

The lottery also offers something that very few companies can provide; a highly regulated random number source that is open to the public. All he has to do is say that the number source used for the drawing is from the state of Wyoming on September 21, 2006.

Just a thought.

Section 849.09, Florida Statutes, makes it unlawful for any person in this state to promote or conduct a lottery for money or anything of value. Section 849.0935, Florida Statutes (1996 Supplement), as amended,[1] states that section 849.09 "shall not be construed to prohibit an organization qualified under 26 U.S.C. s. 501(c)(3), (4), (7), (8), (10), or (19), from conducting drawings by chance pursuant to the authority granted by this section, provided the organization has complied with all applicable provisions of chapter 496."[2] The underscored language above represents the relevant changes made by the 1997 amendment.

Sorry Rich looks like FL. is out
for anyone who doest not know what 501 (c) (3) means
its tax exempt non-profit.

Well I heard tonight that Florida has the same provisions for a sweepstakes as a business promotion like michigan.

Thank God he isn't in NY. you have to post a bond and your first born to get a permit for anything.
