About 3-4 years ago I was talking to a van driver that was driving for an owner, He got a load and a cash advance. Then the load canceled, he took his advance and went to the Casino. Lost all his money, now had nothing to eat on and almost no fuel. Then went on to say that he had a wife and 3 kids at home. I just told him good luck and walked away before I slapped the stuffings out of him.......
I was sitting at what used to be a Williams-Mapco in Lebanon, TN, before the Death Star bought it and ruined it. I was on my 'puter in my truck when a guy comes running by, stops by my truck and tells me, "Hey, this guy just won a lot of money gambling over here. C'mon!"
I have no interest in gambling whatsoever, just don't find it enjoyable at all, so I couldn't see the need to go look at his ticket or whatever. This was before I was familiar with this particular scam.
Next time I bumped into my owner, I told him about it, and he told me how he had gotten taken by those guys. He had previously driven with a co-driver, and his co-driver came to him in tears, telling him he'd just lost his advance money playing three card monte. My owner told him to take him there, so he followed him to the back row of the truckstop, and sure enough, there were some guys playing three card monte. My owner watched for a while, and it looked easy to him. The dealer was raising the cards way up before he'd lay them down, and my owner could see the red queen clearly as it was coming down.
He decided he'd back his co-driver in getting his money back. The dealer asked him, "With what?"
"With this $350 right here!"
The dealer says, "Count it out in my hand."
At this point, I'm thinking, "
You didn't..."
But he did. And the dealer says, "Ok, we're playing!" and lays down the cards. My owner started to say, "Hey, wait, I'm not wagering all of that in one shot!" but before he could get it out, the cards were down, and he said that just like before, he could plainly see the red queen come down. So he picked a card, and lost, of course.
He started to protest that he wasn't intending to wager the entire wad at once, and demand some sort of satisfaction, but the 3 or 4 guys sitting around stood up, and only then did it become obvious to him what kind of scam this was, and he was about to not only lose his money, but maybe his teeth, so he and his co-driver turned and walked away with their health.
I thought, "I'm driving for an idiot!" Nice guy, but if you fall for that... Only drove for him for a short time.
