DoT Inspections

I just had my first DoT inspection. Inspector was actually nice. I passed fine, but I have a question that I didn't think about until I left. He was looking at my log sheets and typing. Do they record you log sheets with the inspection? Or was he just checking my time/distance?

Thanks for the info.

far as log book he was probably making sure you have logged everything correctly, listed a pre-trip for the day , and maybe went back the required 7 days to check on things. There is no telling what them DOT cops do haha. Congrats on getting by with no ticket what type of truck was you in ?

Although we do our PRE and POST Trip inspections, we have never logged these inspections specifically on our logs. Do all of you log those inspections?

My organization that I drive for requires us to show a 15 minute pre-trip every day. They are under the impression that it is required, so i always have.

ps. I like your quote!

It has always been my understanding that you may Flag one and the other you need to show a 15 for. I Flag the Pretrip and 15 the Post Trip.

I try to 15 the pre-trip and flag the post trip but sometimes do the reverse. I think it is individual with each day. If I have time to do it at the start I prefer to start with it. If it is a 'shorted time' pick-up I will go to the pick-up, get loaded and then do the pre-trip. I just do it whenever I can.

I never got called in this year. I was hoping to be called in. I have a DOT due for FDCC and now I will have to pay for it. :(

This morning we spoke with a person in Safety who checks our logs about this issue. He says that, even though, we check the box on our logs indicating we are doing the pre and post trip inspections, we should still always log the time on our logs. Glad we had this discussion! Thanks everyone!!

Just to let you know you can stop at a scale facility and ask for a voluntary inspection. The scales each have to do so many inspection and they actually like to have a truck do a volunteer. Usually if they find a problem they will not ticket you for it if you are there for a voluntary.

Also to answer your queston about pre and post trip inspections. You do not have to log it but you do have to flag. Now here is the catch, if you don't log the time you better be able to do an inspection in less than 7 mins.

I just spent a lil time looking thru the regulation book and found nothing that states ya have to log a inspection..Not to say it isn't in there but I couldn't find it...There are sections that say ya do have to do your inspections and record em on the inspection sheets,,but nothing in the log book???? I know my carrier wants it,,but not sure if its a law to log it or not??
Maybe TURTLE or Greg can help us out with this,,they know allot:D
I log both a pre and post trip just to avoid any problem's and to look professional:cool:

So far each inspection station I came across has been closed,,
Luv the budget cuts. But I am heading north tonight and it will properly be my night in the barrel:rolleyes:

You have to log an inspection as on duty time. I do it all the time. Even if I go get my DOT and it is at a truck stop, on duty....

We were inspected at 4am on the 2nd. Since that time, our Pre-pass has flashed red at every open scale, we do the slow roll across the scales and sent on our way. I think they see "little truck" and think easy inspection, then see the sticker and say....RATS! LOL

That's odd, I got hit with a violation in Ohio from a full inspection and the day after i got a green light on my way back and ever since because they flag companies not trucks.

You do know that Prepass depends on the company you are with, not just your record?

I got inspected and so did the truck, but I didn't get a sticker. Still have a green one.
