Putting the "political" side of this, which is, in itself, likely driving much of the "negative" views of this, I believe the problem that many have with these pictures is a total disconnect from the realities of nature and animal domestication. The constant drumbeat of personification of animals is starting to take it's toll. People are becoming more and more divorced from the "natural", and many are starting to "assign" "human traits" to animals.

Not to Hijack the thread either, however..
I think it's a fine example of social media being the Achilles Heel of our period. Were it not for the internet (Thanks Big Al) I would be clueless to the fact fish feel pain. My first impression after viewing the pic, was every boy should have a dog like this.

I've had a few dogs that are big enough to stand [or lie] on, and agree with LOS: they are far happier when they have work to do - it's in their nature.
But I wouldn't allow the kids to stand on the dog, any more than on a younger [subservient] sibling, because they're not furniture. If you need something to stand on, find an inanimate object. Even the gentlest dog can behave unpredictably when hurt. Or he could just move suddenly, dumping the kid on his tailbone, and then who gets blamed?
Of course, the kid in this photo is retarded, which absolves him from understanding that, but his "clueless" mother ought to know better.
PS I'll believe the dog "likes" being mistreated when I hear it from the dog.

But the question remains, what do the pictures really represent?
Since this is the Soapbox I'll go with the race thing. The dog is black and represents all people of color. The kid is white. He's the MAN. He's oppressing people of color. He will tread on them, abuse them and climb their backs to attain his goals.

It is a good thing this incident wasn't reported to the ASPCA. The cops would have come and shot the dog. Arf!

We use to have a airdale that was a outside dog that was like this dog when I was a kid....I use to craw into the doghouse with him and hangout....I guess that's why I am better around dogs and cats than people.

There are some people who scream animal cruelty when you put a party hat on a bulldog, so the responses from those people were fairly predictable.

Still, there are others who had to look harder to be offended, and of course make the parent the target of their sensibilities. I thought it would be interesting to post this without posting who the kid or his parents are.

He is obviously not hurting the dog. ..but she should be teaching the child to respect other living animals by not using them as a step ladder...

You are likely wrong on both counts. My dogs, when I had them, were always hunting dogs, lived in the house and played with the kids, in the exact, same way, they loved it. They, the kids, and we, were all happy and had FUN! Remember what FUN IS?

If the dog did not want the kid on him, he would have moved. That looks like a lab. Labs don't get out of puppyhood till who knows when? They LOVE that kind of attention and play, at least REAL labs do.

Three of my dogs were Labs, [1 Rottweiler & 1 Weimeraner too], and they loved all kinds of things that weren't in their best interests, lol.
I think Asjssl is correct: we teach our kids that our pets are to be respected [party hats are ok, if the dog holds still for it] as living beings, not animated toys. Or furniture.
Most dogs will just move, if a kid plops down on them, but you just never know - even the mildest dog can surprise you.

What about an older (dominant) sibling, or a parent? Is it OK for a member of the family (be it a young kid or a pet) to use them as furniture? I once had a cat that though the dog was his personal horse. The dog seemed OK with it. When I was a kid, my brother 9 years younger than me routinely used me as his lounge chair whenever I laid on the floor to watch TV.

But it's not about what could happen, it's about what those pictures depict.

So your response falls into the category of being filtered through the sieve of politics, There's nothing in the picture that shows the kid is "of course" retarded, nor if he even has a mother, clueless or otherwise. For all the picture shows, the kid is being raised by two very gay dads.

PS I'll believe the dog "likes" being mistreated when I hear it from the dog.
I don't recall anyone saying the dog is being mistreated at all, much less whether or not he likes being mistreated. The fact is, the dog shifted its position to better support the kid, then laid back down, whereas if the dog felt mistreated it would have simply shifted its position in the other direction.

She? Nobody mentioned a she.

Oh, wait. You know who "she" is, don't you? I see.

dfsdsfdsfdsfcfedfsdsfdsfdsfasdsffds_zps1e59b139.jpg

Ellen DeGeneras posted the above photo and caption, and people (mostly liberals) were so delighted with that it garnered more than 250,000 "likes" and prompted a flood of similar pictures of kids and their pets.

Conversely, "she" (you know who "she"is) posts the above photos and people (mostly liberals) just crap themselves having to criticize the "she-mother" who would allow such a blatant and shocking travesty of disrespect and animal cruelty.

It's pure hypocrisy (that ubiquitous annoying calamity of the conservative), only this time the shoe is on the other foot, and it's laugh-out-loud funny, because the liberals are so unabashedly obvious about it. They don't even try to be coy about it an use a hypothetical "the parent" or "the parents," no, they zero right in on the mother, because they know who it is, and therefore cannot resist in filtering their thoughts and responses through the sieve of politics. Laugh.Out.Loud.Funny.

If only I knew the politics of the relevant "she" of the pics below. Then I could craft my delight at cuteness or outrage at ineptitude accordingly.

I used to have a German shorthair, bird dog, years ago. "Bud" was a working dog, he was used for hunting pheasant, quail and grouse. I was guiding at the time so he was worked hard. He also enjoyed playing softball and "tag" with the boys. One of the thing Bud really enjoyed was being used as an "ottoman". He would work his way under my feet, or those of my wife, and lie down. The kids used him as a pillow all the time. They were too big to ride him or anything like that.

Bud loved to work, and play, and would only slow down to eat or sleep. I could hunt him for several hours and, instead of resting, would bring a stick over and ask to play. He also really like blackberries. We had wild blackberries all over the place I lived at and Bud would deftly use his front teach to pick berries. Liked to climb trees and lay up on a horizontal branch and sleep.

He absolutely hated ground hogs. He would stalk and kill them. My neighbor, who owned horses, used to ask me to send Bud over to kill them. Horses can break a leg if they step in a ground hog hole.

"she" is the one who put the picture out there......what happens when ole Trig just starts willy nilly stepping on other animals who are as kind as his best buddy there...gets bit...and then the dog gets blamed for attacking the child
....its all about respecting others and there space..

I did not see Ellens picture.and i knew who she was from the internet....but my answer would be the same..its not political ..its just treating other living things as you want to be treated..thats all

What I see in any of these pictures..is nobody telling there kid NO..
NO it is not nice to stand on the dog..if its hurting them or not...I see human disrespecting the animal to the point of it being a step stool..
NO..do not stand on the dog...if you want to help..get a stool then you can...pretty simple..

Its just like when I am driving and i see the back windows of the car covered by stickers...seems innocent...what I see is a parent who does not tell the kid NO..YOU WILL NOT. disrespect mom/dads property..Daddy worked hard for this car..you are NOT going to disrespect it......drives me NUTS when I see that!

Tell the kid NO..its real easy...

Most of my dogs LoVeD to play to play like that. My shorthair liked to be harnessed up to the wagon and pull the kids up and down the drive way. He used to "force" himself under our feet so that he could become the "ottoman" of the house.

I have run into very few dogs that did not enjoy that kind of thing with "their" kids. Most I have seen would seek that kind of thing out.

Of course we don't see the kids being told "no" in the picture; that may very well have happened after the picture was taken.

This whole kid/dog kerfuffle is about politics and the liberal PC wackos looking for an excuse to attack Sarah Palin. On the other hand, anyone who has raised kids knows there will be messes - you can call it disrespecting parents' or others' property if you want, but most pre-schoolers don't understand that concept. It's easy to find a million pictures of kids making messes on the internet, and the one below is probably my all-time favorite:

images

You know what that white stuff is? Paint! Notice there's nobody in the picture telling the kids "NO" but something tells me they got the message loud and clear after it was taken.

Please notice the picture of the cat disrespecting on the dog in order to get a drink of water from the fridge.
