Does this add up?

OK, the economy is bad. Few good jobs, people out of work every where. NO chance to get ahead. This is what we are told in the news and by our useless politicians daily. Fingers pointed at everyone, by everyone as to who is to blame.

IF it is SO bad can some one please explain to me what there are SO many fleet owners that have trouble finding GOOD drivers/teams and have so many legal problems with those that they do find?

Why is it that there are so many BAD fleet owners that rip off the few good drivers/teams out there?

You would think that IF things are SO bad that people would be willing to do any legal work that had the potential to pay well these days and that fleet owners would be going out of their way to be honest to maximize their profits.

A lot of what we see in this industry makes no sense considering the times we live in.

There must be some major incentives NOT TO WORK out there if we cannot attract just a few of the millions of hard working, honest people that are out of work.

One of the big problems is people think they are to good to be a truck driver or can't/won't live this life style.
The other problem is passing the drug test. I'm amazed at how many people smoke weed even though they know it will prevent them from finding decent employment.

I believe it has a lot to do with how this industry as a whole chews people up and spits them out. I have experienced this myself. I decided to give up my company driving hat, and put on the owner hat instead, hoping that I might be able to find good people, and be good to them in return for some hard work and loyalty. Time will tell if this will actually work. I believe that most of the good workers leave the industry after a couple years because the lifestyle just isn't worth the wages. I also believe that the good ones that stay eventually become owner operators, so they aren't available to be hired by companies like mine. I am just looking few a few good people...

I'd like to be home nightly too.
But we stay out 3 to 5 weeks and then take 7-10 days off. We can do a lot more in those 7-10 days then we can just having a 2 day weekend.
I agree that most that can live this lifestyle and do this work will become owners at some point.

It is not only trucking. tried to find some one to cut my Dad's lawn and clear his snow. We found few in this business, what we found charged rates that only Bill Gates could afford and they have a habit of not showing up or doing shoddy work.

Try finding a window washer for your house. When I lived in England, the home of the dole, I had NO problem finding a man who washed windows. He charged a reasonable rate, did LOTS of houses and earned a good living.

It seems that we, as a nation, no longer have any gumption. Afraid to move for work, afraid to strike out on our own and run a small service business. It just seems that we want to sit back, have a job with high pay and benefits handed to us and not have to really work once there.

I kinda believe that we are causing many of our own problems.

We got lots of folks that work cell phones, computers, but cant operate a phone book, IMHO. Dont even ask a High school graduate to read a tape measure and add fractions.

I wonder just how many of today's college grads can back count change for a dollar with out the register telling them what change is owed? I have met people who cannot tell time on an analog watch or clock.

I cannot count how many times in the last 4 or 5 years I have called a private contractor for some work that I needed done and they never returned my calls or did not show up when they said they would. Now I understand that things come up but they did not call and say so.

Things just don't add up out there today.

There is an advert on the TV at the moment which I think is very apt ..... I think the advert is actually for a car.

The opening shots are in a grey dreary mode - a girl sits at her laptop on facebook complaining about her parents "not having a real life" so she got them to join Facebook and now they have a whopping 19 friends ...... "now this is living" she says

Tollbooth- last night. $11.50, hubby handed guy $22. Got confused look and guy tried to hand the singles back. Hubby said "I want a ten back".
So...guy handed him two fives and his receipt! He immediately went to fidget in the corner with his back turned. He finally noticed my hubby wasn't leaving and came back, and hubby asked for his fifty cents. Guy looked dumbfounded.
How are these people employed to work with money?!?

I know how to read a clock, but I grew up with digital clocks, so it takes me a second longer to read the clock
digital clocks to me are more natural
Also have confused many a cashier by giving them and extra 5 or 10 so that I get less singles.

its one number that sits on top of a line and another number sits underneath the same line, here is the notation of such a fraction 1/2, lol. I had to find a pic myself, lol. so now what do we do with it.

That is what I mean. If they are just too blasted stupid (it is stupid) or too blasted lazy (it is lazy) to LEARN how to make change then how can they be expected to work HARD or MAKE their own way in life? It takes will power, drive, gumption, a willingness, a desire and an EFFORT to make it. I am beginning to believe that far to many today just don't have what it takes.
