Bolt was your 1st Marriage wasn't it Dennis?.LOL...E-1 was Mine here in the U.S. never had fines that I knew of....If you did or didn't do something in a timely manner they'd just put you OOS until it was done....very simple...

Mercer put a friend out of service about three times for late logs. He's never late with his logs now.

My point wasn't necessarily directed at late loads. Many things factor into that scenario. Could be a carrier, customer, driver issue or all of the above.
My interest was this bit about carriers fining for "clock" violations, or a pro bill number not written down and so on. That is where I think a carrier is ripping someone off, unless of course as Moot mentioned, the driver can fine the carrier for acts of stupidity.

A decent take, except for the breakdown part. I bought my M2 brand new. A month later, I'm broke down and having to get the freight transferred. Should I have been fined for that? I don't think so. They're machines. Even the well maintained ones can have a problem.

I could have be a little bit more clear on the breakdown issue. I mean if the truck breaks down due to lack of maintenance or driver neglegence. Like if a contractor does not carry a spare tire and has to be towed in to have a tire replaced and there is no one open at 3 am. That is a breakdown that could have been prevented. Same thing with some drivers who will knowingly have problems with their truck and take a load anyways, or fail to call you at the first sign of trouble when they are having mechanical problems under a load, simply because they do not want to lose the load.

I had a complete engine failure once and I gave up 90 percent of my pay from the load so my carrier could use that money to get the load covered and delivered! I didn't complain about it one bit because I know how much one screw up can effect a small carriers reputation. I was glad that the load was recovered and that my carrier still has a good relationship with that broker to this very day.

A lot of drivers do not care about the carrier. They only look at what they can get out of the carrier. It is supposed to be a two way relationshio - give a little and take a little. I just gave one of my company owned cargo van drivers a 50 dollar bonus to deadhead from Las Vegas back to Los Angeles - I lost a lot of money on that small load - but I wanted the contractor to be in a good area and we got her a load to Mississippi the following day. If I would have not given her that bonus - she would have merely broke even. It's a two way street.

We all know there are selfish, greedy, and stupid drivers, owners, and carriers. Penalties [or consequences] for acts of bad faith should be accepted, but OTOH, rewards for a job well done [even just a verbal/written acknowledgement] should be part of the program as well.
A carrier that focuses solely on the negatives is never gonna have a really good working relationship with its' most valuable assets - the ones who deliver the goods.

This is more of a question I haven't seen and wasn't aware that some carriers are engaging in this practice.

I am seeing posts relating to carriers that are fining drivers for a "clock" violation.
Or someone mentioned not putting a run number on a bill.
If paperwork was delayed from driver, does that constitute a "fine"? What about a carrier that is late paying the driver? Does said carrier pay a fine to the driver?

Apparently I have been in the dark. Is this a common practice? I would be curious as to what idiots that are running a company that thinks this is a good management tool or practice? Actually, it is pretty pathetic if this is going on.

I would like to know what carrier is doing this Davekc. Can you please share?

Don't know many straights or TT's that carry spares ;)

know a few vanners that dumped the spare in the name of "payload" and winged it with a plug kit and air pump..

Under my van there is a full size spare ready, willing and able. I use to trust the oil change guys to check the pressure like they said they did till one day I needed it and it was flat.

Then I busted out the foot pump, inflated it, used it and when I dropped the van off to have the tire repaired I mentioned the flat spare... The guy finely admitted he had not checked it.

He did fix it.. And I did not pay for either flat repair that day.

That right there....I would IF I were a carrier.....if the driver was late on a load because they did not have a spare....would be terminated....Even as an O/O it ticks me off....that someone would jeopardize my carriers ratings and put future loads at risk that would effect MY income is totally irresponsible...for a lousy 50lbs?.....

I didn't say I supported it. Just that I have seen guys do it. Still not in their defense, I'd bet a 10 ply on a steel wheel is closer to 100 lbs with the jack and tools.

I still remember the day I had 2 flats and still made it to the drop in time. Spare fixed one, plug kit fixed the other. I wore out my foot on the pump getting that tire back up to 70 PSI.

Ive been an O/O for five years I had this happen once when I was a newbee O/O.
I took load of specialized plastic resin with a bag that had a hole that was taped and shrink wrapped I thought it looked OK. I FAILED TO NOTE THE DAMMAGED BAG it was just above zero so do the math how cold the truck got overnite at 60 m.p.h. most likely well below zero. The tape failed and the bag split and abbout one pound of product spilled and, this product was useless. Luckily I had the reciever weigh bag.

Why did the contractor I worked for charge me and why did I pay
$ 122.67 for the spilled product?

1 It happened on my truck.
2 The contractor had a paid invoice for the lost product.
3 I failed to note the exception on my paperworkAnswer is,
Failing to do my job properly wound up costing me money.

If I screw up a delivery I expect to be back charged. IT SUCKS BUT A CARRIER SHOULD NOT PAY FOR A DRIVERS SCREW UP. Like over sleeping or simply not having thier s!@t together.
If a broker or carrier screws up they should own it.

Bob,the incident with the spilled bag is a frt claim. That's different from a FINE. We're discussing taking money from a driver for failing to make a check call, or making a mistake on paperwork, etc.

I did the math and some basic physics. It doesn't compute. If the outside air temperature was just above zero then the temp in the box was just above zero or warmer.

To my knowledge, the only "fine" we get for late paperwork is being paid a week later. So far I've always gotten my paperwork in on time. If something came up and I couldn't though, I have no qualms about waiting.
