Children and "home school"

It is alot to think about. My husband drives already and the company promised that we would be home every weekend. But when it comes to making money, I am afraid they will keep us longer. My gut tells me not to do it.

Thanks for all the great thoughts!

If your gut is telling you not to do it, don't do it. If you cannot overcome your gut while sitting at home, the rigors of the road will be that much worse and you will almost certainly regret and be set back by the decision.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "teaching" aspect. If your children can read and write an do basic arithmetic, they hve enough education.

I can honestly say that 12 years of schooling the way we do it in the us is a total waste of 10 years. I learned nothing useful in school, and much of what I did learn turned out to be wrong anyway.

The most useful times and educational ones were the times I spent with my father ether helping him at one of his jobs or working in one of his bussinesses.

If you want to raise adults the have your kids spend time with responsible adults, if you want to raise children send your kids to public school.

Having said that, I wouldn't think "home schooling" in a truck would not be very practical as it is very hard to study while bouncing down a freeway. But spending a few months on the road with Dad lecturing about how to be a "gentleman" or "lady" and to take pride in ons work etc is the best "education" you can give.

BASIC IS ENOUGH ? No wonder why there are so many uneducated idiots out here! Totally disagree with that statement !
Yes one can be book smart and street stupid. Both need to be learned, school is more than a weigh station in life-one gets what one puts into it-expect nothing-get nothing. A responsible adult -ok-- learned and passed down-look at parents today-I would put my child on the cheeze wagon myself ! LESSONS LEARNED IN THE HOME AND IN SCHOOL IS WHAT HELPS MOLD A CHILD INTO AN ADULT, both are need. Some adults need to go back to school to discover what was missed .

"There should be a law!" Greg, you never disappoint. I hope you were being facetious.

Nope being very serious.

Otherwise, is there any level of freedom, including none, that's too little for you?

Freedom to put in danger kids?

OK I'm all for that, let's start with eliminating the stupid idea that we need car seats and seat belts but until we figure out how to beat the physics of a truck weighing up to 80,000 lbs, I think kids need to be somewhere else.

Are there any areas of life you consider to be none of the government's beeswax?

Almost everything, I don't know where you think I'm all for government intervention in everything but it seems I've given you the imporession I want more laws when I want the opposite. I just find that many don't get to basic things in our industry, one is that the feds are mandated to regulate interstate commerce which we, the people gave them that mandate and two we are a silent industry where most of us complain but don't do anything else.

For this issue, it is simple, my safety was threatened once and a kid who was running around a truck stop was another situation that reinforced my idea Kids Don't belong in Trucks.

The first incident was when a tractor that was passing me had the kid grab the wheel because he could not balance himself as he went into the sleeper, It almost cost me my life. After the driver pulled into the TS, I had words with his daddy about it and he defended his kids actions.

The second was a kid (9 years old) was running into the truck stop because his dad told him to get a soda. He ran in between a couple trucks and ran right in front of one that was pulling out of the fueling area. I and another person lunged to pull the kid out of the way of the truck and almost got killed doing it. The father wasn't a bit apologetic over it and 'suggested' to the kid to look both ways.

Whether or not you feel it is a freedom to let your kids run around a truck stop - the same one that I almost got run over wearing safety yellow in noon time sun - there is a point that we have to look at the work that is being done and question whether or not there is a risk to others or the kids.

I guess it comes down to common sense, would you let your kids go to work with you if you worked in a mine?

Reminds me of the congressional hearings on steroids in baseball. Some wondered, "Where does congress get authority to meddle in this?" One assclown congressman addressed that by saying, "Well, it's not like it's happening on the moon..." causing one writer to remark something to the effect of, "See? Congress does recognize that something, somewhere is beyond their authority: the moon."

Well you know why they were there asking those questions - it is american's past time and we have a national interest in the 'game'. While you may complain about the hearings, I want to see government get out of sports and lift the protections of both NFL and Baseball - talk about anti-competitive. I also would want to see the laws relating to copyrighting and trademarking for public colleges be gone too, all that belongs to the people.

TO the OP, do not mind my comments, it is not a reflection of you personally, it is just something I am concerned about and think your kids would be smarter than those two.

Turtle...Thanks for the kind words!! We try very hard to take time with our son away from the truck and we stop when we can to make sure he gets to see things along the way as well.
And NO its not the same as an RV trip, but its a heck of a lot better than a picture in a book!!
All this said though, if we had other choices we would not be out here with a child. But for us this was desperate times and a way not to loose everything (what little) we have.
But again, I would not consider doing this with a preteen either!!

I guess this is the aspect that appeals to me. My husband comes home telling of all the sights and places he has been. My kids will probably never get to see those- as an adult I never have. Possibly we should just ride with him some in the summertime.

Donaddemt - as long as this is what helps your family at this time, I don't think anyone could fault you. Maybe it isn't your plan to have the family with you forever, maybe just to start so you can make more money. Whatever your plans, only you know what will work for your family. There is a Bon Jovi song that says "I'm the only one that has to look my family in the eye.". Keep that in mind.

There ya go....good tink'in. All the distractors you are proposing for yourself while on the road will do you no favors financially or emotionally. jes ride along for a while and ask hubby to really, truly account for what your touchy feely enterprise really cost on that trip alone. Even the truck load folks will have some over-extending and under-extending involved to be able to (see) what you imagine along the way.
