Cash for Clunkers.. hurts the little guy..

Yeah, that's how the program works, paperwork showing car for car. When I was home last week I got to see up close and personal how it all works. But that's not where the scams are gonna happen, on the dealer lots. The scams are gonna happen when large numbers of Clunkers don't end up getting destroyed, and end up in Mexico or someplace instead. Car-for-car paperwork isn't one that they can scam, but cars being diverted from the crusher is.

I don't mean to sound cynical but we all know for every program, there's a scam, it's all in finding out how. Thanks for the back and forth on it, I'm sure others will have ideas on this as well.

I was at home last week and me and my stepdad were discussing that very thing. We were both wondering where the scam was gonna happen, 'cause you know it will. We finally just went over to the Ford dealer in town, the owner of which is a lifelong friend of my stepdad's. That's how we got to see the nitty gritty of the program. It's also how we got to see just how easy it will be to not destroy many of the cars that get traded in.

And if (when) it happens, it'll happen where I live. There are more used cars that pass through my town (see under avatar) than anywhere else in the country. Lots of titles, lots of cars, all kinds of stuff happens. Hey, we were on 60 Minutes several years ago because of it (well, mainly because of the highly refined art and science of undetectable odometer tampering that many in town have mastered). I promise you, cars will be destroyed on paper, and there might even be a crushed cube of metal laying around somewhere for each of them, but many of them will be reborn as newly previously owned cars with new serial and VIN numbers. And somebody's gonna pocket a lot of cash.

And somebody's gonna pocket a lot of cash.

And with more funding on the way....just that much more to rip off from the taxpayer. Maybe we'll go by the way of Germany and they'll make the program permanent.

Let me get this right,at first the complaint was that this plan would take these affordable cars off the market and the little guy with little money for a car would suffer and not have a ride and now the complaint is that the criminal mind is going to falsify papers to keep these cars available to the little guy so he can get to work. It seems that the criminal mind will correct the first problem by keeping these cars available, the gov. will provide more money for this plan to continue and everybody will have a ride to work. Tax dollars well spent?

The very idea of crushing a perfectly functional car is stupefying. Any good, roadworthy automobile could represent hope and opportunity to the economically disadvantaged. It would make sense to make these cars available to the needy at a nominal fee.

My 1996 light pickup truck has only 61,000 miles. Probably good for another 100,000 miles easily. And the federal government would destroy this vehicle in their eco-madness??!!!

Let these good older cars die a natural death through normal attrition. All this "cash for clunkers" hype is a scheme by the Obama folks to boost new car sales. Primarily GM and Chrysler, in which the government has a vested interest. If you must buy a new car, be a good American and buy Toyota built by non-union labor in Georgetown,KY.

This program hurts no one. Not everyone is doing this, the people that are taking advantage of this program are choosing to trade in their vehicles for a new car. That's it. You guys make it sound like you have to do this or that everyone is doing this. Do you really think that there will be a shortage of used cars out there?? Seriously. I've heard in here that the Govt. should just give everyone $4500.00. Are you kidding me? You people really need to stop listening to Limbaugh, O'reilly, Beck. Oh that's right, nobody in here listens to the likes of those guys, my bad.

The key point here is......You do not have to take part in this program if you choose not to, you have that choice!!!

Exactly..it is a voluntary program...If you don't like it..don't participate as a show of boycott or dislike...BUT let Americans chose what they want...it is their right...4500 bucks is nothing to sneeze at if you need a reliable car for work or just transportation...remember 80% of Americans still have jobs....

and if your middle class American that has been taxed to death..this could be looked at as a bit of payback.

If you pay taxes or are a future tax payer then you have no choice but to participate.

This program hurts no one ? I guess you don't mind the government reaching in your pocket for $3 billion . It's not money from heaven , you know . Wait until these people that stretched their budget for a new car find out they really can't afford the payments and can't get rid of a car they have an upside down loan on .
How many worthwhile services and programs do you know of that were cut back or ended because of lack of funding ? I guess giving Bubba $4500 for his clunker pickup serves society better .

I hope you realize there are 138 million taxpayers . So if roughly 3/4 of a million trade clunkers if the other $2 billion is made available the other 137.25 million just get to foot the bill . Dealerships will become ghost towns when this is over . They will go from the highest sales month in recent years to the lowest .The low will last a lot longer than the high .

It would be interesting to see just how much of MY money is being spent on cars NOT made in the US. This program HURTS everyone. It will NOT bring back the US auto industry and might even hurt it more.

Thanks Greg, I kinda thought that this was NOT helping the US car companies as much as people would like to think. It is just another re-distrabution of wealth program. It is also meant to push a so-called "green agenda". What a joke.

Well it is helping the only US company on the list, Ford. They have two spots on the list.

I think that the Chevy Cobalt is assembled in the US but with MANY parts made outside of the US. I think the engine is German.
