Carrier cutting rates

He is obviously clueless.

It's a shame, 17 years in the industry and he still doesn't know how to run his business to better the industry and make more money. If he wants to focus on running miles instead of money he should just drive around the parking lot until he gets the next load.

We are a team in a straight truck with E-1 and as I read through these I can only laugh. we knew pay decreases were coming but we knew they were coming for the right reasons. We had our most profitable months in January and February than we have ever had with any other company and in this industry these months are usually slower months as we all know but we are running miles we usually only see in the busier months. And I believe E-1 when they tell us more miles are coming because we have already seen it. We saw a team from a competitor 'meow' company at the truck stop the other day who had only 1300 miles in a week. we ran that in two days. so everyone can make jokes and laugh at our rate decerases as much as they want but all i can say is we have the freight we are running non stop and our paychecks will not be affected by the change because we are seeing more miles now than we have in the last year and it will only get better from here. How many of you can say that? We have been with E-1 for 2 years now this company has never given is reason to believe that what they do is for the better. Its one of the best companies we have ever worked for. Now I have to go because we have to hit the road. Just dropped in PA and heading to pick up a load in PA to Laredo for Monday drop and redlivery Laredo for drop in Michigan for Tuesday night. :D

Could you define "most profitable" for us? If you don't want to share the magic formula for getting more profit from less money, I guess we'd understand, but you can see how we'd be curious.

Im a fleet owner at E-1 and very happy!

Maybe you should re-exam your operation. Do an internal audit, starting with the skeletal framework of your business. You have the capabilities.

Looks like E-1 and FedEx is trying to run as close to panther rates as possible.

Let's look back a few months at a thread entitled WHAT MAKES A GOOD MONTH ? or something similar.
I think I remember a FEDEX CR reporting a $41,000 June or July.
The only really good months I remember were Fedex or former Fedex talking about Fedex numbers.
If you made $100 profit last month, up from $50 per month profits, yes your profits have doubled !

Good luck to the run more, make less mentality. Wear yourself out ! And your truck.

You missing the whole point. They will love drivers like you. You mentioned the word "Miles" 4 times in you're post. So with the lower rates you'd rather work more, for less? They don't care about you, and you're mindset is exactly what they want drivers to be like. "Well, at least I'm moving" is so common of a phrase out here to the one's who don't have a clue their cost per mile, etc, and they think just because they are moving, they are making money.....One day, when it is too late, you may see the light...

Exactly! Why is it so common among truck drivers to want more miles, faster speed limits and more hours, instead of a higher rate of pay? You never hear of hourly workers demanding a 60 hour week.

Big wheels rollin'. Got keep them rollin'. Big wheels rolln' movin' on.

I spoke to an E-1 fleet owner that was saddened that he had to ask his people to work more to make the money they made last year.
He thought it would make it hard to keep or attract quality drivers.

In this industry we just can't compete with the ma and pa companies out there because they are bidding lower.
Then why not go with a Ma & Pa company and make the same rate per mile and avoid getting dinged with all the extra fees a large carrier charges their O/Os?

You want to make more and sit more or do you want to do what makes sense and be putting miles on your truck and making revenue?

Mr. Gibbs, you fail to realize that your truck gets paid before you do. Every mile costs money. I'm a vanner so I cannot speak to what it costs to run a straight, but fuel alone costs you almost 40 cents per mile, not? Tires? Insurance? Payments? Repairs & maintenance? It's all there and so much more, and it all gets paid BY you, while you're running your donkey off, before you finish the delivery, AFTER which you get paid. So, if you're willing to run for less money, it's YOU, not your truck, that gets less cash at the end. Less money to pay your bills, save for retirement, see a movie, what-the-heck-ever. I'm an XPO shareholder, so hey: if you wanna put more money in my pocket instead of yours, go right ahead :D . But as an expediter, I wouldn't blame you for wanting to keep yo' money in yo' pocket.

Unfortunately there is a side of me that agrees with MrGibbs...

When a monster comes into town say Walmart and disturbs the order...what do other small businesses do?.....The monster is NOT going to just go away....ma and pa will just have to dump some employees and work more of the hours themselves...after all it is their business.responsibility....if not it is bye bye ma and pa...
We can fight the good fight, but these cheap arses aren't going away anytime soon....so...
do what we do best...drive....after all we are called drivers...we may have to escalate our PM program a bit to compensate....adjust our way of life and make suitable business plans....welcome to the NEW and Improved Expedite world....

BTW..we can bi!ch that we shouldn't have to and things should be like this or they should be like that....the powers are not on our side...

Looks like I'll have to start driving a few 100 more miles to make up for the loss....not like I don't have the time right now...LOL

I know far too many mom and pops would not only survive the "attack of the monster", but thrive after the monster comes to town. All it takes is some brains and a willingness to kick some butt. GUMPTION wins.

The wallyworlds are easily beaten by those who learn to adapt.

OVM,if that side of you overwhelms you,E-1 should have some openings by Monday.

Nope It doesn't overwhelm me at all....not even impressed.....Tell me....just WHAT is anyone going to do about it?.....99.9% of all carriers think this way.....

BTW I left when they took the first dime a few years ago....

Ken, at what point is enough, enough? You are entirely correct that we have to adapt ourselves to new realities. For most of us, it could mean driving a couple MPH slower, not idling even in a drive-thru, whatever. For Phil & Diane, it meant changing careers entirely, and for Hazmat it means going back to cleaning up other peoples' messes. For you, it's having quit smoking, an act that both your wallet and your lungs strongly applaud :) .
But there comes a time when one has to stand up and say "no more!" Whether people start walking away from XPO or the two-headed cat, or simply and respectfully stand firm and decline runs they can't afford to make, it has to start somewhere. Let it be here.

You are correct....but I submit....if a business changes so much one can not make a living at it anymore...maybe it is time for a career change?...

I quit smoking for my health not because of the business....I am pretty much a part timer out here now....my needs are a lot fewer then 10 yrs ago...IF I lived near civilization I'd be a Walmart greeter! and be home every night.... LOL....I am one of the lucky ones....I truly feel for those that NEED this business....

BTW..who you going to stand up to?.....and if they don't listen what will you do about it?....you have nothing to bargain with, no ace in the hole...withhold your services and they'll just sell th load to another and make even more money....

you all thought it funny when UAW workers lost money thru wage cuts....you laughed at fellow Americans trying to make a living, losing some of their lifestyle... having wages slashed.... not so funny now....
