well here's the thing, Joe's better half knows enough people here not to post something like that and would have contacted another member directly using his account so when I read it, it seemed to be a bit too much and left it up until after 3.

The way to prevent this stuff is ... there isn't any way to prevent it unless you want to make this a subscription (paid) site.

Yeah, there's a lot of places that won't allow "throwaway" e-mail addresses from those and a few other domains. It really helps cut down on the riff-raff. I was going to suggest it, but now that you brought it up, the reason I didn't is twofold. One, many truckers simply don't have a permanent e-mail address. I know several who's sole Internet access is via an Aircard, which doesn't come with an e-mail address, they don't have an ISP at home since they're never there.

Between moving a few times and changing cable companies and satellite Internet, my e-mail address would have changed a lot over the last 10 years or so, which is why something like hotmail or yahoo or gmail would be perfect for someone like me. But because a few places wouldn't accept an e-mail address from a throwaway domain, and for other reasons I won't go into here, I pay a subscription for e-mail hosting on a secure site in Oslo, Norway (where there are very strongly regulated consumer and privacy protections hehe), the same host that many of the largest businesses in Europe use for Web and e-mail services. (It's $50 a year or $100 for 3 years. It comes with 10gb storage for e-mail, 1gb storage for files, 1 e-mail domain, 20 e-mail aliases, and 1 Web hosting account).

The other reason is Hotmail (Windows Live Mail) is becoming more and more popular with the addition of the cloud computing of things like Windows Live Office and other applications that are integrated. And, gmail is now mainstream for both businesses and regular Joe's. Being able to tightly integrate the many services offered by Google into a single interface is very attractive, and a lot of people are moving to gmail not because it's a throwaway, but because of things like Google Calendar and Google Docs, not to mention the seamless integration with Android-base cell phones (I just got a Droid, it rocks) with additional things like Google Maps, Google Earth, and the very good turn-by-turn directions that come as part of the phone package.

Maybe an admin survey of existing e-mail addresses would be in order, to see just how prevalent that these throwaway e-mail addresses are on EO. Might be a significant problem to not allow those, or it might be no problem at all. Just depends on how many are using them. But I know several here on EO who use gmail.

bcordell70: Thanks for the info in Firefox. I've never used it or looked at it all that closely. If I ever want to go anon I've got a proxy function here that will use a different IP every time I click on a link.

With 2 questionable posts removed this morning, one containing much sympathy and PRAYERS for a fellow member and the second containing taunts of "gotcha" to the membership at large, I think it's appropriate to open this subject for discussion.

We're all aware that we live in a world of sickos these days but yet we still have the heart to express compassion for a member that is reported to be in distress.

What took place here this morning pretty much takes the cake. While the posts have been removed, the outrage of the membership continues....as it should.

The "new low" that I speak of is this....the claims about the member made in the post had the potential of creating problems between him and his carrier. The sicko that did/does this needs to be dealt with in the harshest way possible.

This has been an ongoing problem for quite some time, the questionable banned member knowing that the main administrator of the forum is now back on the road with his online time perhaps limited. What a wonderful citizen of the community.....one that takes advantage of ALL circumstances for their own entertainment!

I opened this thread for two reasons....1. for the membership to vent, in a reasonable way PLEASE. 2. for the membership to make suggestions to the admin team.

I'm not doing this to bring criticism in any way shape or form to the management or volunteers of EO, it's just obvious that some changes are in order and I'd like to see the membership involved in that process.

To the membership...please post your rants (keep it clean and decent) against this banned member and then offer your ideas and suggestions for the changes that need made.

Huh?? Did I Miss Something??

Disgusting...absolutely disgusting. I stop off on my trip to log in to see.......and I see the events of this morning revealed to be an unbelievably tasteless stunt.

At first look at the post did I think it was real, yes I did. Does that infer somehow that I think certain things about Layoutshooter? No it does not, absolutely not. Things happen...to anyone and if Mrs L had really posted it, well sometime we do things in stressful situations we would not otherwise do.

I have trust that Lawrence will do the right thing to stop this from happening again, actually I'm counting on it, the integrity of the site demands it.

I never cease to be amazed at the lows people will sink to.

Oh so gullible. You people really will believe anything you see on the internet won't you? It sounded as if it was being taken care of internally and quietly and from what most have commented on here by saying, "I miss everything" or "huh"? and "What happened"? etc, etc, this would've just faded away but dieseldiva had to stir the pot.

Like sands through the hour glass, so are the day's of our lives.

As Lawrence said, more action is now warranted, and may be taken. Jokes, insults online are one thing. When you post something that can cause legal ramifications for someone, including problems with their carrier, you have crossed a line. This is the second time this person has done this. I personally have seen the questions raised by "jokes" or "parody sites".

Part of this, I accept the blame for. New ID's show up on the list, and we usually give them a once over. After looking back at about 5 recent ID's, I saw several red flags that I should have caught. And.. huh.. same IP... oops.. you signed up while at home? :)

I've been a "bit" distracted due to some personal issues, including the death of a family member, and the recent upturn in business. As such, I haven't been online as much as normal, and when I was... it was just a quick scan.. no apparent probs.. cool.. I'm off to grab some sleep..

But, back on track now... I'll be watching better, we'll screen a little better, and I got my BS meter back online :)

Thanks for the support folks. This really is a "new low'. Thanks for the post Diva.

I guess you don't have a problem with trolls coming on here and making statements that could potentially damage a man's employment status...unless of course, it's you or one of your cronies. These games have gone on for a long time now but today a line was crossed in a very big way...if you can't see that then you're even worse off than I thought you were. While we're on this part of it, I don't recall seeing you online this morning while all of the drama was unfolding, did you actually SEE and READ the troll's post or are you assuming??

You really should do something about those hard feelings you're harboring from when YOUR OWN big mouth got you banned instead of blaming your mess and the crap from your cronies on someone else.

Oh, and I've been banned before also...my own big mouth got me banned....I don't recall blaming anyone else for it.

My "cronies"? Sorry honey I have no "cronies" I am my own man and have my own thoughts that are not influenced by others, especially on this or any website. Sure a line was crossed today, it was called being childish and looking for attention but the moderators took care of it, it was a dead issue but some people just didn't want to see it as over and kept the conversation going. You know what you do? You ignore that person and see it for what it is, if you couldn't see that this person was who he was I feel sorry for you.

Drama.....you said it dieseldiva and as such as your name suggests you probably can't get enough of it.

Sorry again honey, no hard feelings here. Yeah my big mouth, as you would put it did get me banned for calling a person for what he is and I will gladly take a banning for standing up for what I feel is right. It's actually kind of funny that I had gotten a Private Message from you about that same person about the same thing I had gotten banned for. You were essentially calling him and or accusing him of what I was banned for, I just had the huevos to call it what it was.

Just in case you were wondering what post it was:
Moved: The N word (thread removed for review by Dreamer)
LDB

instead of blaming your mess and the crap from your cronies on someone else.

Not quite sure what that means, who was I blaming, what mess and what crap from what cronies?

The truth is Witness, if this post had been written by anyone else on this forum, you wouldn't have had one word against it. It's more important to you to "shoot the messenger" than it is to stand up for what's right concerning a fellow member......one that just happens to openly disagree with you on a lot of issues.

There's a difference between being "childish and looking for attention" and slandering another member. Do I have to say AGAIN that those so-called childish games could have cost this man his job?? Does Lawrence or Dreamer have to make mention AGAIN the words LEGAL...LAWYERS.....for you to "get it"?

Now I don't have anything more to say to you on this subject because I honestly think at this point that it is your intention to hijack this thread to the point that it blows up and gets deleted and that wouldn't serve any purpose for anyone other than you and those "childish" people that you choose to support (your cronies).

Well i missed everything. I have no clue what this thread is about. i am curious what could have been said about a member here to get this kind of response. But then again if it were lies than i dont need or want to see it.
Maybe a hotkey that any reader can push that alerts instantly all online mods to look at a questionable thread. this way a mod in charge of a perticular thread wouldnt have to watch a forum 24/7.

You know guys, this thread is ... well a lot of misplaced feelings that seemed to have cropped up and words like legal action and a bunch of other things make me wonder if it is really worth the time to even have this thread.

No one was damaged except those who take offense of it and that was the real purpose of the thread in the first place - to get you all riled up over a BS post.

The person it was about didn't lose his contract (hence money), his standing and reputation in the EO commuinity is still there and most of all EO has taken steps to solve this problem. What matters is when these things happen, the admin(s) deal with it, and the thread goes away with no one making a big deal about it. But once there is a big deal made about it, it fuel the person(s) to find a way to do it again.

With that, I recommend to Lawrence and Dale both to lock this thread.

And so we should all just relax, let it go....until next time and the time after that and the time after that? Maybe the next time it will be YOU who is slandered and you might feel differently, that's usually what it takes to get most people's attention...the thing has to land on their own front porch...how sad.

The thread will die a natural death as all of them do. I felt it was needed because there were a lot of responses to the original post this morning and then suddenly it disappeared without explanation. That might have left most who posted concern about the member in question wondering what was going on and it didn't give them any chance to respond once they found out the post was a sick hoax.

I agree that most removals, locks of posts, and bannings should remain private....I said most...this infraction was far too serious to not expose to the membership, sending a clear message to the offender that his games will no longer be tolerated. Go back and reread Lawrence's post, maybe that will give you more perspective of the seriousness...I can't recall a time in all of these years that I've seen him use that language.

Well yes, you should relax, not feed the fire and let it go. The problem is that every time you all get your feathers ruffled, it let's the trolls and ****** ***** ***** in on what yanks your chain.

I have been slammed and slandered and there are still a few posts out there in EO archives that have yet to be removed that have my name all over them but BFD, I learned how not to let it get to me.

OK then, Lawrence/Dale/others are doing what needs to be done, they are totally responsive to the community and did a good job mitigating this issue. BUT you know and I know that there is no way to stop it short of a paid membership site, so what can be done about it is be vigilant and have proactive mods handle some of the issues when they crop up but most of all don't feed the fire.

When someone directs their post to me, I will respond. If you think that's fanning the flames then that's your problem.
