Personal use always use car lanes into US, doesn't matter for Canada.
It doesn't matter entering the U.S. either. On any given day, at any given U.S. port of entry with any given agent manning the booth, in an empty U.S. plated cargo van the car lane may be the correct lane or the truck lane may be the correct lane. I've been yelled at both and warned to never let it happen again. At the truck booth they may charge you the entrance fee or they may let you slide. In the car lane they may make you park and walk inside to pay or let you go free.

Moot are you saying you weren't warmly welcomed back to your country? (Have you noticed they have removed the "You will be treated with respect" signs from their booths?)

You are correct.... There is a chance no matter what lane you chose of being warned about wrong lane! I've been warned on both sides.

IMHO yes. At least on the overflow loads. I can't speak for the big 250+ carriers, but the posted van/sprinter/small straight loads seem thinner everywhere I'm watching.
