Spoke too soon! I went out to finish up on the truck, everyday stuff, checking oil, tire pressures etc. I opened the hood to check the oil and the cables that stop the hood from falling all the way open snapped. The hood just kept on a rollin. I caught it and sort of eased it down. It also snapped off the strut that holds it. SO, tomorrow I have to see about THAT getting fixed. Both shops in the area that MAY have the parts are closed on the weekends. This "STUFF" is getting REALLY old!

Home time is over. Time to finish my Atlanta to Williston ND load. Left home at 10:30 this morning, only 900 more miles to go. Should be about 5-6 hours early if no problems. Did fluid check, tire rotation and inspection on Saturday. Van feels great today.

You could move down to a 170 extended sprinter with a custom built sleeper

NOPE! Unless there are MEGA changes in this business, when this truck is gone, so am I. It is NOT worth the hassles. The returns, at least from my perspective, do not justify the outlay. The idea of a sprinter is even LESS appealing. Don't want one of those ugly looking box doohickeys.

Sprinters can make a nice little sum of money tho, get you a long and tall and it'll hold a lot of stuff. Plus it's under 10k and get over 20mpg with the new 4 cylinder

They make less than I earn now. End of story. Besides, they look like perverted vans. They make WAY less per mile then I am willing to work for. The heck with it.

Yep. My time is VERY valuable. Making less for the same amount, or more hours, does not meet my demands. I need MORE per mile, not less. MORE per hour worked, not less.

Do you take into your thought that vans cost less to operate so you make less to make more?

KS- what do you think the luckiest, hardest working team can make in a $printer, in a year, after expenses ?

I understand that. No matter how you look at it the pay is too low. WAY too low. Expediting is reaching a point, rapidly, where it is not longer worth the effort. It is getting more difficult with each passing day to make the kind of money I need to meet my needs.

The truck I own has to support itself, a home, two people, retirement savings, replacement vehicle, and sky rocketing health care costs. NO van can meet my needs, unless I get it for free. The cost of just about EVERYTHING is going up, except freight rates and they are going down. That is NOT the right way for things to work. In real numbers I am making less now than I was 8 years ago. To make even less, would make no sense.

I wouldn't think as much as a team in a tractor or straight but I don't think the gap between small straight and sprinter would be that different after taxes and upkeep costs
