You are correct in some ways Blizzard...I am like you, learning more and more every day...about rates and the inner workings of a carrier that with other carriers I wouldn't even get a sniff at because they keep ya in the dark ! *LOL*

where as Mr JD here and Mr. JE are shedding more light...

see I can be nice too...JD...;)

Your killing me:D:D:D

Forget the price for this run. At any given day there are at least 10 cargo vans in Laredo. Unless you have exclusivity for this load/shipper how comes no other broker covered it, in let's say 30 minutes? And how can you hold it for hours and hours until somebody reads your post on EO?

I think JD is just wanting to broker C/V freight and not have any C/V's exclusively running for his company.

I think, maybe, somehow or another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's amazing, I talked to Bolt,A.Blair, at least 10 companies that told me there drivers have NO interest in doing it. I also posted it on NLM(Im a customer),Active Aero, and posted it out to the Sylectus carriers. Finally in the afternoon Matrix bid it on NLM.

I also had a call from a carrier that saw it that was willing to drive from Houston to help me finally.

So you tell me? Why would everyone that has capacity down there say no? I can tell you why!!

At any given time on the weekend when I post freight there are less than 5 companies that respond to available freight. And thats on Active,NLM,Sylectus, etc.

5 COMPANIES!! And I can tell you no responses from the "BIG" companies. As a carrier on Active it's mandatory to say yes or no (at least they want you to do it). So right now I have 47 "no's" to a load I have posted right now. On the weekends it's 5 or less.

That's your dispatchers working real hard!! Congratulate them next time. Even better, I just brokered a load from MI to VA, called Express1 and they told me NO availability, 5 minutes later I awarded it to them on Active Aero.

What if thats your dispatcher saying no to loads? Do you really know??

Huh? I have tractors in Laredo, I would NEVER send a cargo van to Laredo. WHY? So they can sit or come out for $.50 a mile? I have plenty of vans that run for us. Cause I'm busy your saying I don't have access to them? Huh?

I brokered over $1million in freight last year and the rate we are moving now it will well exceed $1.5 just in brokerage. That's nothing to do with my trucks.

Just cause a customer calls in a Laredo load I should tell them No?? Or should I charge it properly so my independents can make some $$?

Sorry your confused. My straights and tractors run under a contract (exclusive). My cargo vans and sprinters are independents. (no contract). They can work for who they want at anytime. This gives them flexibility to make a better income for themselves.

Why would you EVER lease a c/v on to a company?? They should be competing for your truck, not parking. You should be setting your rates, not them, why are you paying fees? NONE of that even makes cents!

John that's not what I said. You don't want to exclusively contract C/Vs, that's all I said, your looking for guys with their own authority and insurance to broker to. Is that not correct? I never said you did not have access to them.

Add one thing, Before I p/up a 50 cpm load I will d/head home. Thankyou very much.

John, I don't mind going to Laredo if the price is right. I most often times deadhead into Kansas City Kansas right after I make my drop. If you pay say a dollar a mile to go down there and kick in an extra 200 dollar bonus so I can use that to get to Kansas, i'd go to Laredo all day and all night!

John has the right idea about vans. Vans need to be able to make really good money and that can only be accomplished by 1 of three things. 1. You are extremely lucky; which i'm not. 2. You are a one of the dispatchers favorite drivers; again this will never happen to me. 3. You lease on to multiple companies who will use you because they have no other units in the area. Each carrier you pull for has customers in different parts of the country; which will give you more options. That is my humble opinion!

Oh, and for the multiple company nay sayers, I don't buy it. Larger carriers take phonecalls from multiple brokers every day and have to turn freight down at times. What is the ifference between Panther using multiple sources for loads and the driver doing the same? If you can get the load yourself, you don't have to be the favorite driver; all you have to do is make a phone call, or say yes or no to a broker or partner carrier!

If I EVER offer you a .50 cent a mile load, I will give you the gun:D Yes, there are a handful of expedite companies utilizing independents. A lot of your major companies frown on it cause it's pulling more out of their pocket. For about the same as your paying for fee's you can get a awesome insurance policy that covers windshields to cargo. And you can take freight at the rate you set. T and K, Whirlwind, lil truck solutions,j hawk, J D Clark, and a few others are pushing hard to get the word out about the advantages of this program. Unfortuneatly, some companies need the revenue to stay in business, to where we use this as a tool for our customers and can usually pass on a better rate cause our money is made from straights and tractors.

600 for your van load is a good rate. We have taken them for less, but in that area of the country, it can be profitable to double dip and run two on the truck in either direction of your listed locations. How much DH for second load would you do with both delivering in Laredo, or the reverse, McAllen. :p

As for .50 a mile, I would be thinking more along the lines of .50 a pallet.

Sorry. I'm confused. If the load was outta Mc Allen and I was in Laredo?

Same difference. Go to McAllen from Laredo, and bring two loads back. Of course I am talking a straight truck doing it verses a van.

I don't know about 2 loads cause all my freight is exclusive and we never consolidate. But it would be the same regardless. Im doing tractor loads from Laredo to Laredo for $900. So I feel $600 on a cargo van is fair for 260miles r/t. Your also taking a chance of missing that opportunity out of Laredo.
