i agree 2010 is going to be interesting. all should take heed and be as profitable and cost concious as possible. those of you mentioning deadhead, you should all make it your goals to talk to your companies and reevaluate deadhead policies. lets face it most of them suck and pull down the profit. most need to do this. this is one area that has been let go for along time.

Absolutely....as vehicles dwindle there will be times that we will be asked to go absurd DH distances for a MUST cover load...carriers have to understand that this is a deal breaker unless WE are properly reimbursed.

Agree, many loads I turned down just because it was too much deadhead. Some of them they told me they NEED to be covered because of a major customer. I was very sorry, but could not do it.

That is absolutely a carriers FAULT..
Either the contract rate is too low. to pay out DH.

or a dispatcher is keeping some of the profit..

IF..

IF were really a MUST load they would pay you ALL that was in the load and NOT make a profit.

AND yet they try their best to guilt us into it..
with...if it doesn't get picked up we'll lose the customer.

As long as WE don't end up suffering when carriers end up going on a recruiting binge because WE get picky about things like DH.

Despite the current economy, it is still too easy to get into this business and have carriers prey on your rookie status and knowledge to do the dirty work. Not to sound mean but hopefully CSA 2010 will thin the heard a bit more, it won't slow down newbies with no commercial record but it at least might get some junk operators off the road. I still think this will not be the year where the pendulum swings back onto our side, busier yes but not in demand enough to make a lot of demands.

It is ours to watch the bottom line from our standpoint as OVM points out, but we are in a bad situation of hurting business by not covering calls from customers. The company must retain the customer base it has while seeking more. I agree that we have to draw the line somewhere and while it might be prudent for the company to take a smaller portion they seldom take this option as the company must make something on every call. This is their profit and expense coverage.

Unfortunately what will happen is already happening in a few companies as Piper mentioned of the herd being increased to cover calls some of us won't due to dh or rates. Yes many newbies will do the runs until they learn the real costs of running. But having said that the company will hire more to have coverage in areas it currently has poor coverage. I know of one company up here that hired more o/o because the current crop is complaining about the pricing for certain runs. So the new hires are currently doing them (we'll see for how long). Many companies will try to return herd sizes back to what they were before the recession. This will give them great coverage across the country but will hurt the herds income level on an individual basis until freight picks up. The company with the best service is going to win this competition for business for awhile until the others catch up.

i do agree with piper 2010 will not be a year of milk and honey loads. if you make dumb mistakes your done. my point was 2010 will be noticebly better for the expediter pie over all. some of our brothers will not be here in 12 months. tt freight will take longer to rebound. probly third quarter.
the trend of revolving doors will continue but i dont think as many o/o's. it still cost money to buy a cargo van. layed off people going to buy one for a maybe carreer? banks have tightened lending they have already been massivly burned on tt repose. are people going to spend their life savings on a carreer they have no experience in. how many of the newbies are going to approach this as a business. yes more drivers will be recruited. alot will crash and burn quickly parden the pun.
this is not the kindest and forgiving job to have.

I agree. Tight credit will keep most away. The ones that enter inexperienced, will crash burn as a few mistakes will wipe them out.
On the upside, we did very well this year despite a turbulent economy. I can only credit the fact that we have some of the best teams & people in the business that REALLY understand it. One can't ever underestimate the quality of the people around you that make it all work.

You are so right about having good quality people around can make a big difference. No matter how you look at it in this business it's a team effort.

Its hard to know for sure, probably a combination of many little things, with luck being the largest of them.

Unfortunately I get a lot of unpaid dh! Have been looking into how to reduce that as it definitely is a lot of wear and tear on the buggies for no return.
Rob

I am in the same boat as far as unpaid deadhead on hotshots, my solution was and is to run more local, glad I have that option.:) When the weather gets nicer I might be up for some more road trips, who knows.
