Another Brilliant Panther Move

attn truck drivers:

your opinion is very important. But this smart move is for vans ONLY. The load ratio for trucks is about 2 loads/truck. Meanwhile, for vans there is 1 load/4 vans.

Since the EM (empty move) program was killed in December, we have to invest ourselves to relocate back to main area. Of course we refuse short runs after driving 400-500 miles empty and waiting 3-4 days for a load offer.

But this led to an increase of the dispatch workload. So they called the driver council reps. (vans only) and explained the fenomenon. Suddenly, the reps lost their sleep because of the dispatch problem. And they came up with this proposal.Yes, it was A DRIVER COUNCIL PROPOSAL! The proposal was approved and the reps regained their sleep again.

This is democracy at work !

I enjoyed several good years as a solo van operator with Panther. Some months ago, I became disenchanted with many policies I felt infringed on my ability to earn a living as an expediter. It became clear to me the carriers do what is in their best interest and I should do the same. I moved on to a small carrier, less than 75 units, and have no regrets.

There will be no Panther bashing by me. I earned a decent income there, but it became increasingly difficult as time went on. Philosophical differences prevailed.

At the small carrier, I earn a good rate with no discounted freight offers. They know me by name and because they are small, I am nearly always first out regardless of which city I am in. No forced dispatch, no forced swaps, no micro managing, no handholding. Pure expediting without hassle. Always paid promptly and treated well. It works for me.

Again, I would emphasize not all large carriers make a good fit for everyone. Same is true for small carriers. Panther is a fine company, it's just easier for me here. I can operate with relative freedom.
