An open letter to Petro

Ate at a Petro last night. The open-faced meatloaf sandwich you serve is delicious. I sprinkle some seasoned salt on it, dump on a lot of Louisiana hot sauce, and it's fantastic. My problem came when I got the bill. $12.47 for that meal and iced tea is out-fricken-rageous and unac-fricken-ceptible. Whatever your costs are, whatever the reasons for that price being what it is--my fault, your fault, nobody's fault--you have priced yourself out of the market for my business. I have a new food dehydrator waiting for me at the house, which will enable me to preserve food without refrigeration, and I'll get a lunchpail heater and similar culinary accoutrements, and you'll rarely, if ever, see my too-large carcass again, and perhaps my carcass will become smaller once I start doing this. If my wages double or your prices decrease by half, which would make them closer to the actual value of the product, then I'll come back.

Please give your waitresses my apologies. I'm a good tipper, and they won't be seeing any more of those, or from the other people who are deciding as I.

...and Pilot's coffee is better than yours too...I always have to conduct major science experiments at the coffee bar to tame the bitterness. Just a suggestion...

I agree its hard to beat Golden Coral . I always get mine to go and they weigh it by the pound and oz. I normally get 2 to go plates filled with all kind of stuff. The 2nd plate fits my rolls and butter and an occasional food that wont fit on plate 1. With 32oz drink it comes out to be $11.

In Michigan I like stopping at the Old Country Buffet. A buffet to go is around $8 with out drink. For some reason they dont give drinks to go.

You would think that truckstops would make the meals cheaper for drivers. With that being said. Drivers would get other things in the c-store with there money. They make enough off of sweet tea and soda alone. $1.99 for a glass of tea or soda is uncalled for. Yes I know that some drivers get two or three glass's, but the cost for it is maybe .10 a glass. You get Drivers to come and eat at a fair price and they spend money in the c-store or shop. When I was a kid I would love to go to a truck stop and eat with my father. The food was good and cheaper than going to a dinner.

Times have changed in the truckstop business. Now it's all about how much they can take from the drivers. They still don't pay the waitress or the cooks that much. All these truck stops are doing is putting drivers out of the business with offering fast food like Burger King, Mc donald's, Pizza Hut, and many more. I must say I'm one of the driver that would get done with a load and go inside and get fast food and then come out the truck and go to bed.

With DOT 2010 drivers need to be in better shape or lose their job until they get in better shape. I find myself trying to get in shape after years of driving over the road eatting fast food and not walking around the parking lot after dinner. It's easy to put pounds on, but harder to get the pounds off. When I strated driving back in 1995 I was in great shape and was only 234 lbs. Now 17 years later I have gained over 100 lbs and could put a WIDE LOAD sign on my rear end. Tricia got me a tread mill and I plan to use it to shed a few tons this season. I hope all the new drivers take this to heart, or you will be like me, a 41 year old driver that is over weight with knees that hurt every morning when I get out of bed because of the extra weight.

We prefer to stay away from places that feature "grazing bars" (buffets) more so for truck stop "grazing bars" Sometime we will hit them if in a hurry. TA's and Petro have become VERY slow in getting food out. It took over 40 minutes for Mrs. Layoutshooter to get a BLT the other day. Not out of the norm anymore. Can't wait to get the new fridge in, it has a real freezer!! Home cooked food for a bit after we leave home, extending the joy of eating REAL FOOD for a few more days!!

CSA 2010 has nothing to do with driver health but staying in decent shape is always a great idea regardless.

I agree. You see them drivers so tired from walking a few feet they have to lean and rest on something before preceding. Im not making fun of them but I wish they would think more of themselves and lose a few pounds to be healthy. Then again there are skinny people unhealthy Now on the other hand I could stand to gain a few pounds. :D

After becoming disgusted with the price and low quality of restaurant meals in general and truck stop meals in particular we bought a $45 microwave and have been dining on $1.89 (at Walmart) Hormel heat and eat meals. The Pot Roast and Beef Stew are very good. One meal takes 90 seconds to heat. Just the price of three truck stop meals paid for the machine. It is small enough to fit in our Ford van along with the small generator that runs it.
Bon Apetit!

I haven't done a food buffet at a truck stop in over a year. What Ihave been doing is the TA all you can eat meals,of which, what I've been eating is thier salmon, and I have the cajon spices on it.I get it with wild rice,no bread or potatoes, and have lost 35 lbs doing that,In the morning I may have the salmon with eggs.Since I've been home for 3 weeks,I may have gained a few lbs, since I've been doing pasta, and back to eating bread, but this will come off fast,as I go back to quit buying sandwiches.
As far as what I spend, the Petro has a good salmon dinner too, usually around 13 dollars with the coffee.I use to do Golden corral, but since I quit eating steak, eating there doesn't apeal to me.I use to go there about 3:45 in the afternoon, with the senior discount was less than 10 dollars, and at 4:00 they would start serving the steaks
I do miss eating red meat, but I feel much better since I quit.Is this permanent, probably not.I want to loose another 20 lbs,Ill have to see what happens

Ever since my bout with food poisoning in Kansas 8 years ago, I will never eat from a buffet again. It's just too risky, especially since I'm usually up against the clock.... hard to make a tight deadline when you have to stop and shoot Hershey syrup out your butt and vomit every 20 minutes..... eeeewwww

I will eat fast food or sit-down restaurant foods when necessary but on the road its mostly light yogurt and granola. Peanut butter sandwiches keep very well for days on end at room temp. Trail mix and low sodium jerky round it out.

When I see the "drop and hook" guys lumbering around struggling to breath, I just feel sorry for them to be honest. I can't understand how anybody gets that far along allowing obesity to control their lives. I'm 6 feet tall and if I hit 195 pounds I feel like a tub of guts and I DO something about it. There are plenty of upper floor mailrooms that need 4000 pounds of paper delivered. Ask any local dispatcher for a run like that and you can be getting paid to literally work your *** off within the hour.

24-hr fitness is for the birds.

Homemade Meatloaf
Slices of Texas toast and our homemade meatloaf topped
with mashed potatoes, gravy and grilled onions. $9.39

Entrees include a trip to our famous Soup and Salad Bar
Meatloaf.jpg
I dunno. $9.39 plus tea and tax for a plateload of artery Spackle, soup and salad bar doesn't seem out of line. All of that for half that price and I'd be wondering if there was any real food in it.

I don't understand why there was no price problem until the bill came. All the Iron Skillets I've been to have menus with prices.
