Alabama passes strict immigration law

Alabama has passed into law one of the most stringent immigration laws in the country.

The new legislation, similar to one passed last year in Arizona, requires schools to find out if students are there illegally.

The law, which takes effect on 1 September, also make it a crime to give an illegal immigrant a ride in a car.

Advocacy groups say they will challenge the measures, which they call racist and unconstitutional.

There are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the US - and individual states have increasingly taken matters into their own hands in an attempt to tackle the problem.

Fear of deportation

But none has gone so far as Alabama, says the BBC's Jane O'Brien in Washington.

As in Arizona, police will now be allowed to arrest anybody suspected of being an illegal immigrant - even if they are stopped for something else, says our correspondent.

But in addition, businesses and schools will be required to check the legal status of workers and students, while landlords will be committing a crime if they knowingly rent to illegal immigrants.

Republican Governor Robert Bentley, who signed the bill into law Thursday, said: "We have a real problem with illegal immigration in this country.

"I campaigned for the toughest immigration laws, and I'm proud of the legislature for working tirelessly to create the strongest immigration bill in the country."

But an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union warned the move could deter some immigrant parents from sending their children to school, for fear of arrest or deportation.

A district judge blocked the most controversial parts of Arizona's law - such as wider police stop-and-search powers - amid fears of racial profiling.

That case is expected to end up in the US Supreme Court

Someone is going to have to explain to me why the Advocacy Groups think that this is "Racist"

Surely illegal is illegal no matter what Country they are from.

Not in this country. Whenever there is a policy that someone does not like it is either racist or "mean".

Good job Alabama. Obama and our useless congress could take lessons from them.

I hope this does not start a big bruhaha here in the soapbox(ya right), but while the idea of "Surely illegal is illegal no matter what Country they are from." is true in principal, It doesn't work that way in reality.

I know of many people that only see - Hispanic, Mid-eastern, Asian, etc, and automatically assume those people are here illeagaly.

This is where the "Racist" feeling comes.

I know this, and welcome all immigrants that come legally.
I was just explaning why some see these types of laws as racist.

Cause it is an easy straw to grab? If things were reversed and say I in Mexico, they could be called racist...

I don't like watermelon or ribs...that makes me racist?

They use it as a fear tactic to get by any and all debate over the issue. By saying it is racist, it removes any opposition on any possible position one takes for proper immigration while adding a flare of the dramatic to the conversation.

The problem with the racist argument is it makes the ignorant look more ignorant.

As did all of my grandparents and some of my greatgrandparents. My mother and father were the first to be born U.S. citizens. Those who came here became Citizens, LEGALLY, as quickly as possible. They were Americans, free!!

And that there is the problem.

Many of the Hispanic, Mid-Eastern, Asian, etc people we see on the street have the exact family immigration tree as you guys.
Their ancestors came the legal way and raised familys here.

I have worked with many guys of hispanic familys that were born here, but because of their ancestories, are looked at a illegal.

They are every bit american as you and I, and should not have to provide "PAPERS" to prove citizenship.

IMHO

I understand, but there is a problem. There were not 12 million illegals from Poland or Italy. It is those who choose to ignore our laws that are causing the problems for those who do it right. Regardless of the country they come from, race or religion.

There is not an easy answer. First the border has to be controlled, it is not now. Then there have to be controls on numbers and skill sets coming in. Medical controls have to be enforced and I believe that Standard American English should be required for all official functions.

I understand all that, and agree there is no easy answer, but EL asked why groups see this as racist. I hope I gave a good example why.

I know what was meant. I don't like the term "racial" to start with. I don't believe it is all about race, but, we do have a problem to be sure.

I think the term "racial" in politics is just to make opposing ideas bad from the get go and no other reason.
