Are Americans opposed to privatization of state and federal services?

Being from Canada and Ontario....a whack of government workers are no more...thru privatization...postal workers, DOT, waste collection.

IMO - It depends on which service is in question. Public safety should never be privatized, but thingd like public works, trash collections, etc should be.

All IMHO of course.

agreed....but the act of selling postal services, lke stamps and picking up parcels and stuff is ALL privatized......the salting of highways and most plowing same thing....the government has now shed millions of dollars in liabilities...like pension funds and accident insurance....

I suppose the point is....no where do I see a move down here in that direction....the postal service is losing billions of dollars and states crying for money, but yet no move to privatization....just the cost to maintain their equipment and capital expenditures...could all be cut....

yes its an election year and no politician wants to mess with cutting government jobs...

I have water from a private water company, my trash collection is from a private company and my sewage is taken care of in my back yard, NO company involved on a daily basis.

I would had NO problem eliminating the Post Office and many other government boondogles.

Agree on all except sewage. It would be quite a stinky mess in an urban area.

Yes, there are moves:

With the announcement*that the U.S. Postal Service will be unable to make a $5.6 billion payment to its employees’ health benefit plan due on September 30th, calls for privatization of the archaic service are mounting.

But as with everything U.S.A. We have caused a pickle:

The underlying problem is the monopoly granted to the service by Congress. For years the Postal Service has charged above-market rates to deliver first class mail, which subsidized the mail going to “the last mile” of customers where delivery costs are much higher. But that monopoly privilege has been eaten away by the huge reduction in first class mail thanks to the increased use of the Internet. Increased competition by UPS and FedEx has also encroached onto the Postal Service’s turf.

Privatization of the Postal Service Moves Closer

Who would want it now?

I remember reading about a newly privatized toll road somewhere in America, and thought it was 470 around Denver, but went looking online to see if that was it. Couldn't quickly find proof of that, but did find the following info.

There are toll roads in the US that have been privatized, but as this article shows, some aren't too keen on adopting the idea. And the US Senate has approved a measure to discourage privatization of US toll roads.

And the proposed bridge from MI to CAN is supposed to be funded largely by a private organization, isn't it, in exchange, at least partly for having their own toll booths? I'm not quite up on that.

The USPS may come up with a new model and improve if privatized.

Though, as we've seen over and over, anything that involves too much change, especially if implemented too rapidly, the citizenry will squawk and p*** and moan 'til the cows come home. Everything is just too big sometimes, that it is ****ed near impossible to reach a consensus on anything, much less please everyone.

I'm all for regions, whether it be states, counties, or cities, implementing privatization in ways that work for that area but that may be foolish to try in another area, where any number of factors may complicate things.

The CEO of UPS made the comment, he didn't understand why the Postal Service is broke. I've always said it would be an easy fix if the Postal Service would hire a couple of top Fed Ex or UPS people and let them run the company. We don't need Saturday mail for one.

It is broke for several reasons. As with most government functions it never tried to stay current or run at a profit. It signed contracts with workers, and then did not fund them, even though the employees put their share in. It has come home to bite them.

I am told by a friend of mine that is a carrier for usps, the actual cost to deliver first class mail is closer to .80 per peice. He says the postal service can not raise rates without congressional approval.

I don't know if any of this is true or not, just sharing.

Nothing would surprise me. Nothing is more useless or corrupt than our government. They could not run a toy train. They, and the Post Office, have outlived their usefulness.

Yes it is true and i think congress is blocking them from cutting costs like stopping Saturday delivery and closing a bunch of post offices
